Microsoft Security Essentials stopped working

HP Computer running XP Professional SP3. All has been well today and then I come into my computer and MSE shows my computer is unprotected. I've recently run MalWareBytes and SuperAntiSpyWare..all was well there. I used MSE and did a quick scan and it showed no problems, but it still shows that my computer is unprotected. I'm running a full scan now, but I did that Sunday and it found nothing. Should I uninstall MSE and install it again?

I have that problem every time I get an upgrade for CCleaner. I have to uncheck a box that says MS Malware in applications. It was deleting the last updates and maybe prevent the auto scans. Not sure about that last bit.

So I did update CCleaner....how did you get MSE to start working again? Did you have to go into CCleaner and uncheck that box? I'm unclear as how you got the program to start working again.

grandmas....I will not let country of origin make my decision, but I do still believe in buying made in the USA if possible, and that's hard, but another subject. I too am a "Grandma" and not that computer savy. That is the reason for my two posts about virus scans. I was looking for other peoples ideas and experiences, since mine are so few and I feel I am not qualified to make a good decision based on my knowledge alone (which is little). I probably will go with Avast from the comments posted. I do want something that updates daily. Maybe you could tell me of your experiences with MSE since you are trying it on one of your computers and have Avast on the other. I only have one computer and it's all I need, it's a Gateway and I will have to look at the box to see where it is made. I know my old Gateway was made in America, not sure about this new one, well 1 year old. I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before the 12th, when I have to decide. I have looked at websites that compare virus scans but that can be confusing. I want real answers from real people, it makes more sense to an old Grandma like me. LOL Thanks everyone for your help, I appreciate it so much. It's nice to have a forum to ask for help.

you would only have MSE if you went and downloaded it and installed it, the program does NOT come with windows. You would need to totally remove AVG when and if you do get MSE, as stated use the removal tool which you can find here. Antivirus Product Removal Tools Keep malwarebytes if that is actually what you have, it is difficult to know when you do not use the actual names in your post. What does this line that you posted mean??? "the malware small window at the bottom of my screen" are you referring to malwarebytes? or is it some rogue malware??? Tell us exactly what it is you see and what it goes to. Names of security programs are extremely important because the people that want to infect your computer with bad stuff create the bad stuff and put names on it that are very similar to real programs and if we do not know which you have well we can't really help. And zep is right the mini is not really meant to be a main computer it is small in every way not just size, it has a very small processor and since yours runs windows 7 it takes a lot to run that and the little mini will struggle. but you do need to tell us exactly what is slow, is it surfing the web, is it booting up, is it opening programs on it????

since you said you don't know anything about it then I would run a belarc to get all the info about the pc and a SIW, plus you will want to run a secunia scan to see what needs updating on it and do those asap. Belarc Advisor SIW those are good to print so that you have all the info handy should you need it. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) I forgot to mention adding spywareblaster to your security list, just install, update then once a week open it hit update then click the enable all protection so the shield turns green. SpywareBlaster be sure you get the free version when you go to the download link just continue with the one you started with do not move to the trial of the pay version.

luis_pr, Please follow through with Zep's and Ravens suggestions and get the help you need. This virus is advanced and has recognized MBAM as a threat to it's existence on your computer and can leave you wide open to much more severe infections that can not only render your computer useless, yet also invite other infections that can steal your personal information and also get into your acct's if you do any online banking, shopping, etc. "Search Redirect Virus". What makes this virus annoying is not the fact you are getting redirected all the time, but the fact it makes itself impossible to remove with your conventional anti virus. It does this by infecting your system in a different way to a normal virus. Normally, a virus would install software or run a process, which can harm your system but your anti virus picks up on this before the infection gets a hold. However, the Redirect Virus manages to infect a system file, allowing to cause the redirects but also evade detection. The system file in question is one used by the operating system to handle redirect requests. Such requests are made whenever you click a search result link. This is a normal process. However, once the virus has infected your system, it manipulates this process to redirect you to random advertisements and sites that are of the highest nature for more infections. bbbluz

I've unchecked MS Malware in applications...after you do that, does MSE work properly or do you have to run CCleaner again?

It's still doing a full scan of that computer...I'll report back when it's done and I do a restart. It is my main computer that I use all the time :o(

All done scanning...nothing found and MSE seems to be working correctly again after a restart....I guess all is well for now. Thank you for your help and concern...you probably know how we novices panic when something goes wrong :o)

If the icon turns brown, open MSE, and do an update and let it do a quick scan..icon should then turn back to green

sorry, I have been busy. I just opened CC and unchecked MS malware in applications and then update MS essentials and did a quick scan. Every time you upgrade CC this will happen. Not update but upgrading to a new version.
