Microsoft Security Alerts

I have a Dell desktop computer, Windows XP sp3. I have my Windows updates to notify me, then I download, install. I did that on Sep 26th. When I did the restart, I got a security alert when it came back on and said I didn't have any virus protection. I use Microsoft Essentials. The icon loaded about then and said I was protected. I x'ed out the alert, ran anti-virus, SAS, and Malwarebytes. All okay.

A few days later, I shut the pc down. It came back up the same way. I was able to x out the window and all was well again. Next time, I got NO alert. Today I downloaded/installed the windows current updates, restarted, icon again says I'm protected but I can't get rid of the Alert icon. It still says I have no antivirus.

Tell me if you need more info. I just don't know what to do next.

Have you tried restarting your computer to see if microsoft security essentials works ok then?

Regardless... If I were you, I would download a fresh copy of Microsoft Security Essentials. Uninstall your current version and install the new download after a restart of your computer.

Its really not normal for it to start up instantly giving you a message every time that you have no virus protection.

since you said you don't know anything about it then I would run a belarc to get all the info about the pc and a SIW, plus you will want to run a secunia scan to see what needs updating on it and do those asap. Belarc Advisor SIW those are good to print so that you have all the info handy should you need it. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) I forgot to mention adding spywareblaster to your security list, just install, update then once a week open it hit update then click the enable all protection so the shield turns green. SpywareBlaster be sure you get the free version when you go to the download link just continue with the one you started with do not move to the trial of the pay version.

I am suspicious that such a message is from MSE. I am inclined to think you have a virus. Download and run Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) and Super Antispyware (www.superantispyware.com) -- both free -- run their scans, and report back. And, as azinoh says, if you are running both Avast and MSE at the same time, stop: choose one and disable the other.

With the wealth of programs for internet security it is about the same as picking Ford, GM or Chrysler as a best vehicle. There are a number of long running anti virus and malware programs that stand up very well. Normally I tend to shy away from the new guy on the block. Note above that Jane_ny uses Live Onecare and seems very happy, I have used and worked on computers that use Windows Defender. This appears to be the best of both. The firewall should not be an issue, it has been used on all Vista models and there have been no big write ups about it being defective. Note too Mikie has been using this since beta and if my memory serves me he mentioned installing this back in the spring or early summer. Like Zep I installed it on my Windows 7 computer just today so I will see what it does for me.

They seem to hit alot on seniors knowing they are lonely and know thebuttons to push and unfortunately one of them is buy magazines and win big and so they buy and buy magazines but don't win of course but spending huge amount of money. There are times you must take over and I like the idea you get the power of attorney and take control of the money and give them allowance, as long as they can play and do what they like some, then let them. And don't go threatening to them either as that really puts their back up bad, they change like someone said and they do need reminders about things. The last nanny job I had found out the grandmother told me she didn't have money for food due to making long distance phone calls all the time. I did tell finally and the mom was so happy to know that and she and her brother and a friend of hers had started up this once a month cooking meals and so what she did was her mother helped looked after her son when they did those days of cooking and she also went to store when they found they needed something and plus cleaned all the pots and pans,etc. and kept the kitchen decent. And told her in return she would be given meals to take home and plus she invited her mother over for suppers lots of times and fed her. So, think that way and maybe something can happen for her to not to spending all her money. I like the allowance, get power of attorney and through a lawyer and then see what she is paying out and is she even paying her bills and if you can innocently check cupboards out if she has food in them or fridge and freezer. Health, does she have enough money to buy what is needed as so many elderly take alot of medications. if she doesn't then take over and pay the bills and make sure even if you have to take her grocery shopping and help cook meals for her to see that she is eating. Something has to be done for sure, just how to do it, they will be furious for sure but keeping them safe is a must.

Did a restart. MSE comes up saying pc protected, then followed by that darned alert saying Virus Protection 'off'.

So now step by step: I've downloaded a fresh copy of MSE. Do I use add/remove to uninstall the old?
Then install the new, restart? Or restart, install new?

Download it .
Go to control panel, add/remove and uninstall it from there.

Restart the computer and wait for it to mostly stabilize and finish all its doing mostly.. Then install it.

It took a while to go through all the above, especially since MSE ran a scan afterwards. When it finished everything, the Alert was gone. As it's happened most times when I restart or do a hard shutdown, I decided to do that before reporting here.

Guess what? It's right back to the same situation I first posted about. What next?

(BTW, when I was installing it, it said if I had any other malware programs, etc installed, I might need to uninstall them. I have MalWarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. Do I need to take them off? Have had them on here for months, along with MSE, and no problems before this.)

Open windows security and tell it that you will monitor your own Anti virus.

Have trouble, Google my entire sentence above.

You can search for and delete
EppOobe.etl
Microsoft Security Essentials will rebuild it at next restart of the computer. That might fix your problem, but it should have been renewed at install of it new.

I think you maybe have an old anti-virus or yahoo safety scanner or McAfee .. or some one of the free junk that comes unasked for with some program installs.
Something is conflicting with it.

That .etl didn't show up when I did a search. When I downloaded MSE earlier, it asked if I wanted to replace the file, I said yes. So a little while ago, I downloaded it again and had it sent to my desktop. Uninstalled the old, reinstalled the new one, then restarted. That alert didn't show up, but everything else seem to be running slow.

I never had any of the other freebies installed on my computer except CA that came free from cable company. It still shows in add/remove but nothing's there. I used something you guys told me to use to remove the program in the first place before installing MSE.

I hope this has taken care of my problem. Will let you know if it comes back next time I restart.

For what it's worth, just in the time it took me to type this, my pc speeded back up to normal.
