help downloading Microsoft Security Essentials

Been here before and have always been helped. I need help again. I had MSE on my Windows XP and was very happy with it. I now have a windows7, it came with Norton and it has one more day to go. I do not want to renew so I went to download MSE, when asked for version selection, Windows7 is not a choice. How do I install it, or is it not available for W7 version? Thanks, HHH

as stated it is for 7.

you must fully remove Norton prior to install of MSE, use this program to do that.
AppRemover
after that is fully removed you can then do the install of MSE.

Thanks, ravencajun, I'm gonna go try it now. I am thinking that using AppRemover means I don't use Control Panel at all. Guess I will find out. Many thanks again, HHH

grandmas....I will not let country of origin make my decision, but I do still believe in buying made in the USA if possible, and that's hard, but another subject. I too am a "Grandma" and not that computer savy. That is the reason for my two posts about virus scans. I was looking for other peoples ideas and experiences, since mine are so few and I feel I am not qualified to make a good decision based on my knowledge alone (which is little). I probably will go with Avast from the comments posted. I do want something that updates daily. Maybe you could tell me of your experiences with MSE since you are trying it on one of your computers and have Avast on the other. I only have one computer and it's all I need, it's a Gateway and I will have to look at the box to see where it is made. I know my old Gateway was made in America, not sure about this new one, well 1 year old. I'm just trying to get as much info as possible before the 12th, when I have to decide. I have looked at websites that compare virus scans but that can be confusing. I want real answers from real people, it makes more sense to an old Grandma like me. LOL Thanks everyone for your help, I appreciate it so much. It's nice to have a forum to ask for help.

since you said you don't know anything about it then I would run a belarc to get all the info about the pc and a SIW, plus you will want to run a secunia scan to see what needs updating on it and do those asap. Belarc Advisor SIW those are good to print so that you have all the info handy should you need it. Secunia Online Software Inspector (OSI) I forgot to mention adding spywareblaster to your security list, just install, update then once a week open it hit update then click the enable all protection so the shield turns green. SpywareBlaster be sure you get the free version when you go to the download link just continue with the one you started with do not move to the trial of the pay version.

That .etl didn't show up when I did a search. When I downloaded MSE earlier, it asked if I wanted to replace the file, I said yes. So a little while ago, I downloaded it again and had it sent to my desktop. Uninstalled the old, reinstalled the new one, then restarted. That alert didn't show up, but everything else seem to be running slow. I never had any of the other freebies installed on my computer except CA that came free from cable company. It still shows in add/remove but nothing's there. I used something you guys told me to use to remove the program in the first place before installing MSE. I hope this has taken care of my problem. Will let you know if it comes back next time I restart. Shirley For what it's worth, just in the time it took me to type this, my pc speeded back up to normal.

Your other thread indicates you have nothing showing for Trend Micro when looking in the 'Program Files' using Windows Explorer. Is that right? If that is the case it would be very unlikely there are remnants running or causing issues. Did you do as you suggested in your original post here and try to remove and re-install MS Essentials? What happened?

Ok, I uninstalled Norton and went to that site ravencajun said. I am not addressing her/him cause maybe he/she is already asleep. So someone, tell me why I could not do it because it said I was trying to download to a 32 "whatever" and I needed to download to the right 64 version.........what, where to now? HHH

Which version of Windows 7 is on your computer? To find out if your computer is running a 32-bit or 64-bit version, do the following:

1. Open System by clicking the Start button, right-clicking Computer, and then clicking Properties.

2. Under System, you can view the system type.

Then download the appropriate version of MSE.

when using app remover you do not worry about going to control panel add remove just use app remover it works great just used it recently on one I was working on.

DONE, Thanks to ALL. Now another ?. That download box that comes up on the left upper corner. The one where one chooses to run the download. I have 2 Security downloads. the one for 32 that did not work and the one that did. Also when downloading the removal, I did not know what I was doing and now have it twice. To remove unwanted ones do I click on the bottom of box where it says to clear? or do I have to go somewhere else to remove them? AND thanks again, I hope I remember all I did cause my sister wants to do same. SHE ASK ME??? LOL
