Comments (6)My guess is that you don't want to move windows, doors, plumbing etc. I would orient the island so that you have a long island facing the sink and the window. That way, the view from the island is through the window, which will be pleasing. Another option is to put a square shaped island, then you can sit on two sides of the island. L shaped island does not look good, (IMHO) and it will not function well because you will be squeezed in the L. I would move the sink to the left of the window as you look at it so the distance from the sink to frig is reduced. Is your window drawn properly? That is a rather low from the ceiling window. Did there used to be soffits that you are taking out? If you are taking out the soffits and not raising/enlarging the windows, I think it will look odd. You may have to spend some money and raise the window appropriately.... I have a similar L with a center island. Frig/range then to sink. It actually works quite well for me. I don't need/want the water source on the island. The skinny uppers next the hood does not cut it. It needs to be balanced with long horizontal shelves perhaps... I have my speed oven mounted under the counter on the island. It works fine for me. This is not so popular here, however. Kitchen design is a balance of esthetics and function. What functions you accept may not suit another user. Pay attention to what functions/esthetics are important to you not what others think are important to you. 10 years ago, the rage was the two level island. I loved my 1 level island then and I would not budge from the position. Now, one level is more popular I also LOVE my island without a sink on it. Again, not a popular choice. But this works better for me..... Another option for your kitchen, since it is so big is to fill the left side wall (where the frig is) with solid wall of cabinets/frig/pantry/wall oven. Then you have the island and 17 ft counter space to work with. This is a popular European plan. They often fill one of their walls completely....See MoreMy turn! Comments (8)Hi All, thanks for the help, I'll get working on some revisions. Lindakk, I can't tell you much about this process, since I'm in the beginning of it all. But I got my info here at GW and IKEAfans too. One thing I can say is Dea at Scherr's is very helpful and they are completely on top of the IKEA thing so far, so I'm just hoping it stays that way. I too didn't like the lack of selection, especially for a white painted door, from IKEA so I'm hoping this is the perfect solution. I'm thrilled with the way you can design your cabinets on the IKEA planner and immediately see what their cost is! Birkie thanks for the info on the end run dishwasher situation, I'll pass that along to my IKEA installer too. I totally agree about the wall cabs next to the stove too. My installer added those in, but I think that open shelves would be much better. I'm just not clear what kind of shelves, who builds them, and what to put on them that isn't ugly or ends up cluttered. That might be something that evolves over time but for now the wall cabs will come out. I also like the idea of moving the fridge to the stove wall. What's stopped me so far is we're keeping our old fridge and that would be one of the first things you see (through the passage) when you come in the house, so I just wanted to avoid that. I'll think about it some more. Back to the drawing board!...See MoreFinalizing Ikea kitchen layout
Comments (82)So this is the kitchen I ordered... I know I didn't take every single piece of advice but I appreciate all of it and considered it all very seriously! We will use plain white subway tile backsplash and tile up to the ceiling behind the hood, so that will help with the spaciousness. I did "get over" the symmetry thing on either side of hood. We will use a 36" countertop on the peninsula so it will have about 10" additional counter behind the sink, the standard depth just seemed too narrow but 42" is too deep and would subtract too much from the DR area. To support the counter 10" overhang we will work something out - maybe just a simple frame of 2x4s and then cover panels mounted on them, the space can house outlets and wiring. Or maybe hack some very shallow cabinets there or something. I know the double-opening wall cabinets don't seem ideal but I actually don't mind a door opening toward me when I can open it far enough to have it out of the way. If I hate it, I can exchange the 30" for 2 15" and have them both open hinged left....See MoreNeed help with IKEA kitchen layout
Comments (25)When we rent during vacation, we always put things away in the cabinets so there's little or no clutter in the Kitchen or elsewhere. It's frustrating when you have a rental without enough cabinet space for food and other items we've bought. +++++++++++++++++++ You could do open shelves, I suppose. To me, though, open shelves add to clutter b/c you can't close a door and hide the clutter. Plus, they're dust collectors and you have to constantly dust/clean the items on the shelves - unless they're in use every day - which will not be the case b/w renters. The shelves themselves will also collect dust. We have two cabinets that are open (they're supposed to have glass, but it hasn't happened. Long story.) Anyway, no more than I dust those shelves, it seems they're dusty again! While it might not be an issue for the short time a renter is there for the renter's stuff, you will need to make sure those shelves are cleaned/dusted - and the items on them - and ready for the next renter. It just seems to me you're adding more work. However, if the main goal is for "light and airy", maybe it's worth it to you....See More- 8 years ago
