Yes, the floor lamp needs to go. It could be replaced with a new floor lamp, a sconce, which would go on the wall with the window, or both.

I would like to keep the painting above the couch in that spot. I realize the colors are brighter, but in real life it is OK, and the painting is by my late father in law and his artwork is very dear to me. I could possible shuffle artwork in the house.

I like the painting. You should keep it there. How about throw pillows with blues and reds and greens that are in your carpet and painting? Could you spray the floor lamp a pewter or silver and buy new matching shades for the table and floor lamp? Bring the pics to the store and see what pillows look good. Bring a bunch home and see which ones work. Maybe a combo of solid colors?

Colors are hard to see on the monitor sometimes but those are the colors that I see. I have candle scones next to my fire place. I buy candles in a fun vibrant color so they really stand out. With candle scones you wouldn't need to worry about electric (obviously!) you could put them on the wall next to the picture.

What about a pharmacy style floor lamp replacing the current floor lamp?

The posts and beams in your room are so cool! I'd love to see more pictures of your home. Nice rug, that is great that you got it for a good price! I think I'd pull out the blue from the rug and the painting for pillows. I'd keep the floor lamp, but replace the shade and put it on the other side of the sofa, in the corner.

The rug is perfect, congrats on your treasure! As I look at the 1st photo, the couch feels crowded in its spot between the window and the beam; is there a another possible furniture arrangement? It seems like the 2 chairs might look very pretty casually angled in the couch's spot.

As I continue to obsess over minutia, I'm wanting the left corner of the painting to line up w the wall corner, maybe bc of the angle beam.

Oh, and silvery blue and turquoise cushions would be nice-- kind of watery colors.

Unfortunately, there is not room on the other side of the sofa for a floor lamp, because then the sofa is too far in front of the glass door. I could pull the sofa away from the wall and in front of the beam, perhaps even put a console table with lamp behind it. I will try that and post a picture tomorrow.

Sounds like colors for pillows I should look for are in the blues.

I also think pulling blue from the painting into pillows would look nice in several shades.

Also think that painting would look nice in a wider, more substantial frame...

What a pretty room! The new rug is a beaut, and I really like your painting too. Agree that watery colors would be lovely, or even shades in my favorite palette: sea glass.

Blues, greens and white/cream/natural would be the colors I'd focus on for the pillows. Try to balance between the brighter colcors in te painting and the muted ones in the rug.

I would lower the painting. It is too high above the sofa and too close to the beam. Hard to judge, but I think you can drop it 6 inches or so. I would also consider sconces or wall vases on either side of the painting to give it a bit more presence.

I would also pull blues from your rug and/or the painting for pillows and maybe a throw to add more color. (Although if you wouldn't use a throw there, don't get one just to have one.). I love Auntjen's sea glass colors! I also agree with those who suggested lowering the painting and maybe trying a more substantial frame, maybe in an antiqued gold to add a little shine? I like the idea of a pharmacy lamp; I recently bought the Normande floor lamp in antique brass at Wayfair and think it would look pretty in your room without taking a lot of space. Homegoods also frequently sells a J. Hunt brand pharmacy lamp with a round shade in an antiqued brass and one in black for only $59. (That one at Wayfair can also be found at other retailers such as Amazon.)

And, perhaps, swap the sofa and chairs. Angle the chairs slightly, so they won't protrude into the doorway or be so tight against the side beam.. Beautiful room!

yes, pull couch out from wall... or could you even flip flop the chairs with the couch? then maybe the chairs could be angles a little and the wall space behind them wouldn't look as tight and may help the back window look better since it is centered...

The rug is a great find and looks great. Agree with trying to go with the soft blues/sea glass colors for pillows and a throw. And agree with moving the painting down and over. Can we see the rest of the space? The sofa does look crowded up against the beam & outside doors, so if you could swap the sofa and chairs, it might make the room feel more spacious. Then get a new, neutral shade for the floor lamp and put it on the other side of the room. Or maybe you have room for a narrow sofa table behind the sofa if you move it.

Carolb, that's a great idea putting a more substantial frame around it too. love the finish & style on that 2nd one. Could perhaps be a bit narrower but love that look.

I love that painting and think, as many have said, that blues and watery tones would be great for your throw pillows. Unlike one or two people, I really don't think you should lower the painting, although I could see a larger frame (but yes, I know, frames can get expensive!) Lowering the artwork would mean it is more likely someone's head or hair will bang against it if they lean back, and when someone is standing in the room, it will just seem Off. But then again I'm rather tall, and get uneasy when I have to look down on art...

I agree with lowering the art. If nobody bangs their head against the wall now, they won't bang their head on the art if it's lowered. Also would like to see the sofa and chairs flipped.

I will not swap the couch and chairs. The room is open. The back of the chairs are visible, they are fine but I do not like the look of the couch's back and so it will not float.

I will also try to mock up a wider frame.

I would consider moving the couch under the window which gives the best light for reading and there won't be the problem of the couch being too long for its space. If you were to put the couch where the chairs are now you could put a long but narrow table behind it with some interesting ornaments and/or plants on it to camouflage its back.

From where you are standing when taking the first photo, what is behind you? I am curious as I feel the couch is smooshed into the space where it sits. I would definitely try and find another place for it, so it can breath and you could add some side tables.

Since the above photo was taken I recentered the lamp and got new LR chairs as the old ones were the victims of kitten and puppy hood

Below, you can see the space between the table and the LR. While I can pull the rug and chairs back a bit, if I do much I wont have room to walk between the back of the chairs and the table. Also, there is not a chair at the head of the table in the photo, but when my MIL comes for dinner most Sundays that is where she sits(she likes to sit on her walker).

Lovely room! Now I remember your space! I would try two things... I would try the sofa in front of the FP and move the chairs to where the window is. I would also try the opposite. Move the sofa to where the window is and place the chairs in front of the FP.

I prefer my two chairs angled in front of my big window. Chairs would be better than a sofa to allow airflow from the baseboard heat. Your glass lamp works well to lighten the look in front of the window. I would change the shade--it blends too much with the chairs and you need to add color to that grouping anyway. Your sofa would need to float opposite them however.

Your home is beautiful! When I looked at the pic of the sofa wall as a unit, I would just lower the painting a little and add simple vertical sconces to complement it. Since you have a lamp on the table between chairs, plus your ceiling fixture, would it provide enough light with sconces? I suppose you could also add lighting on your buffet piece. We have a "room" off our kitchen that gives me fits trying to arrange. It has a slider to the back yard, too, so that eliminates one wall for furniture. Agree with pillows in the blue tones, with maybe a little pattern for contrast with your sofa.

If you put your sofa in front of the window with chairs opposite, would you have enough width to accommodate that? That might be fun to try, too, but you'd probably need to move your painting, or put a narrow console table under it with a lamp on it, so the painting doesn't just float on that wall by itself.
