Do you have any knee or back problems? If so, I would seriously rethink doing tile.

Additionally, I think the wood tile is a fad and in five years, it will date the houses.

I'm not considering it because of its popularity. I actually didn't think it was all that popular. As much as anything else I'm doing it for it's durability to resist just about anything you throw at it from dogs to high heels to rocks stuck in your shoe to kids to spilled drinks to uv light... I'm all about low maintenance materials that will last.

In five years that wood tile will look like it did the day I bought it. Wood floors will not.

The tile is also a lot easier on the budget than real wood which isn't a primary factor but it was a pleasant surprise when I started shopping for it.

Being in California, it makes more sense to have tile everywhere. I would not like tile in my bedroom. We have porcelain tile in our bathrooms out of necessity (they are wet areas), and sometimes I dread walking in there. My mom hates the tile in her kitchen. It is hard, cold, has grout that becomes problematic. We live in WI, where it gets very cold.

The cold isn't a problem for you in California (except a few stray days). A rug would solve whatever old problem you had on your feet in the morning, although I am not sure it gives that much cushion to the hardness of a tile floor. And you still have grout. Maybe a noise issue? What are your alternatives? Would you put in carpet?

I do not like the wood like tiles. I agree that it is a fad (because of its look and durability make if popular!) Someone compared it to the floor at McDonald's and I noticed today that the fast food restaurant I was in had the wood look tile. LOL. What gives it away is all the tiles are the same size. Wood floors do not look like that. I would be very unhappy with a wood floor with 16 inch planks all over the house!

Since it floods round these parts, plank tiles are getting more common. Pick up the dead fish, scrub the floor, and you're good to go.

What about Luxury Vinyl Tile like Coretec? Softer on the back and knees. No grout lines and sorry, I've seen the top end of the wood look tiles and it still does not look like real wood. It does however appear to be more uniform than a real wood floor so if you don't like the look of a "living" floor, then go with the tile.

Or since you're in CA how about doing something really interesting like an encaustic type of tile in the rest of the house and then do the Luxury Vinyl Tile in the bedrooms?

Oh my, I never heard of encaustic tile and after looking at photos of it on Google I would never put something like that in my house. Definitely not my style. Not. At. All.

I don't know anything about the vinyl tile you mentioned either but this is a pretty high end 7-figure home. It took some serious research to be OK with replacing the wood I originally wanted with tile. But the thought of putting in vinyl seems crazy. Maybe it's just an uninformed bias. So if this vinyl really is "luxury", has great durability and is acceptable in a higher end home then I will research it. But if this is a product designed for apartments and house flippers then I wouldn't consider it.

Usually there's less wear on flooring in a bedroom than anywhere else. But yes, tile would certainly be close to indestructible, save for the possible chip or crack. If that's what you want, go ahead and do it.

Will future buyers want it? Maybe, maybe not. Tile is great for beach houses (sand), and pet owners (dog nails can scratch most wood floors after a while). It will certainly be great in summer - even in Northern CA our summers are getting hotter with more frequent heat spells - so it's up to you whether the 'winter chill' factor is too much of a downside.

If not tile, then real HW flooring. I have LVP, and it's perfect for my situation. But a high-end 7-figure SoCal home, no no no no. Not appropriate to that market at all.

Do look into the subfloor heating systems if you do tile. No reason why you'd have to do an entire bedroom, just put it in where you would want it, for winter treks to the bathroom and/or closets. You can even put them on timers, I believe.

I know that putting tile in the bedroom is a personal decision. But I was hoping to hear from people who did it and if they would do it again or if they regret it. I find those types of first hand accounts very valuable in helping me make my own decisions.

I definitely plan on putting under floor heating in the bathroom which will have tile. If I put tile in the bedroom I will most likely put it around the bed and the pathway to the bathroom. And yes, you can integrate the heating with a timer or with home automation. But until they have a wearable that can predict when you'll need to use the bathroom during the night and turn the heater on 30 minutes before, floor heating isn't a perfect solution. And setting the timer can become a chore if you and/or your spouse don't always get up at the same time every morning. Long story short, it helps but doesn't eliminate the issue.

On this subject, what are people's thoughts on having wood look tile downstairs and real wood upstairs? Is that OK to do? And if so, would it be necessary to make the two similar?

Wood floors everydangwhere are my suggestion. But I live in the woods and love the colors and durability and timeless beauty. Also, having lived in CA for years and even when it's warm the mornings are not so much, I always have slippers by my bedside. Get what you like uscpsyco and enjoy your decision.

No you don't want to do LVT in a 7 figure house. In fact an online friend's builder had suggested just that to my friend and I had let my friend know it wouldn't be good idea for the same reason.

If you love the look, go for it. I'm in SW FL and for the past 2 years DH and I had been looking at houses (before we decided to build). Any house with tile throughout meant I was going to tear it out because I personally can't stand the feel or look.

Everything in life is a trade-off...

Tile: cold, hard, grout maintence, chips

Wood: susceptible to water damage, need to refinish

LVT: perception of cheap, phony, effect on future resale value

I'm struggling with this same decision, also for a higher end custom home. Budget is not unlimited, and I suspect I'll choose all of the above! Wood in main living areas, tile in bathrooms, and LVT in utility areas and possibly even guest "wing".

LVT seems to be the perfect product, and it's incredibly inexpensive, but it's a total paradigm shift from what we're all used to.

Personally I find tile hard and unyielding, very unpleasant to stand on for long periods of time. The thought of having to seal, and reseal grout every few years (or else watch it get discolored and grungy) just turns me off of it.

I don't personally like tile at all. But that isn't the question here. I'm not ever going to be in the market for a high-7 figure home. I sincerely doubt most people on GW or Houzz are, either.

I have mixed flooring materials in my home. We have 75-yr old red oak random width flooring on the main floor. When we picked the LVP I chose a woodgrain that had a similarly warm tone, but was distinctly different.

If we had chosen wood-look tile, I would have done the same thing. Something in the overall tonal range, but intended to harmonize, not match.

Even to put in HW through the entire house, I would probably still pick different woods for separate floors. I've been in houses that used the same wood flooring everywhere and there was just something a little too 'matchy-matchy' about it, for my liking.

Both wood and tile need upkeep and maintenance. Its part of keeping any part of your home looking nice. A major design floor I have seen with tiles in this kind of application is using a soft "flexible" adhesive and a rigid grout. The flexible adhesive allows the tile to move, which feels nicer underfoot, but causes the rigid tile adhesive to crack and require replacement.

Wood floors can be and issue in areas where there is a variance in humidity throughout the year. Wood buckles and cups when the humidity changes, often causing people to sand their floors down, which then resets in the summer causing crowning.

That being said I would go for professionally installed wood every time. It always seems much cozier than tile and thats definitely something I would want in an upmarket home

I don't know if this was mentioned, but I just realized that things get dropped in a bedroom pretty frequently (people are groggy, alarms going off). I know my phone has fallen to the floor at least a dozen times this year from my bedside table, and I am really glad it hasn't fallen onto a tile floor! Just something else to think about.
