Coffee Or Coffee Maker For Good Coffee?
Comments (23)I use 12 level tbsps of coffee plus about 1 1/2 more for our ten-cup Braun. I always offer guests added hot water if it's too strong, but no one has ever complained. We buy Don Francisco online or from the catalog; it's DH's favorite. Don't care for Starbucks; it tastes very harsh to me. We have a variety of D.F. flavors that we like. When they have a sale we occasionally spring for Kona. There is now a discussion about coffee brewed in French press coffee makers being bad for one's cholesterol. A Dutch study comparing filtered to unfiltered coffee indicated that this was the case. There's a fair amount online about this question. I just googled 'french press coffee cholesterol'. Very interesting information....See MoreCapresso or Technivorm coffee maker?
Comments (9)Used to have a Capresso (still have one of their burr grinders and love it!). We have the Technivorm Moccamaster (KBT-741 I think) going on to over 2 years now. Like baver and weissman mentioned, it does have its quirks but it's also been the best coffee maker we've had. I agree with weissman that the lid is tweaky and that it really needs to be on all the way and then loosen a bit to get a good pour. If not, then there's a weird split stream that comes out. As far as keeping coffee warm, in our experience, putting the lid on right after brewing keeps the coffee "hot" for about two hours without preheating. The carafe will keep the coffee "warm" for another few more hours thereafter. Also the amount of coffee in the carafe affects how long it stays hot/warm. We have a Nissan thermos that we use if we need to keep the coffee "hot!" for several hours. It's a huge difference and I highly recommend the Nissan. Not that most people will need to keep their coffee hot for 24 hours but when we first got it, I put it through a test by preheating the thermos with very hot water and kept the thermos about half full with coffee for 24 hours. That coffee still came out pretty hot (not warm) the next day! There are 2 other nits I have about the Technivorm but really are little nits and just took some adjustment on our part. First, there is no automatic shut-off. Which means we had to learn to shut if off once the coffee was done brewing. The saving grace is that when on, there isn't a hot plate that can burn out. The 2nd nit is the filter basket's lever in our model. There are 3 positions: full brew, half brew, and closed. Sometimes when washing the basket, DH would accidentally push the lever in the closed position and not realize it. Go to brew coffee and nearly had an overflow issue. Luckily he always caught it in time before it overflowed. The way I fixed this problem since he never did learn to look at the lever before he brewed coffee was to use painter's tape to keep the lever in the correct position. We handwash the basket so the tape stays on for quite a long time. But other than that, Technivorm makes the best tasting coffee in our opinion. We've done side-by-side taste comparison when we first got it and still had 2 old coffee makers. Same grind, same coffee, same water, noticeably different in taste. Oh yeah, as I understand it (but I could be wrong), all the parts on the Technivorm are replaceable....See MoreBuying new coffee Maker
Comments (13)The third "free" Gevalia coffee maker just failed this morning. We are definitely cancelling the subscription for Gevalia coffee and instead using our $10 coffe pot that we purchased at a local store. What a joke of a marketing program to sell coffee. What a waste of scarce natural resources and an unecessary contribution to landfills. Another "free" item that ends up in the dumpster....See MoreGood coffe maker under $100?
Comments (35)This has been a very interesting discussion and really helped me narrow my choices down. I had to really think about how BF and I would use the coffee maker, because that is what it really came down to. We both get up early and crabby and need to make a quick easy pot of coffee which we then pour into our thermos and take to work with us and also have a cup for breakfast. We drink different coffees because BF likes to try different brands and deals and I can only drink the low acid stuff. So I decided no use spending money on a thermal carafe because we won't be having the coffee sit around in the carafe. Let's just hope I don't break the glass one! I know the way I am in the morning and no matter how easy it was I know I would not wash the percolator, because I tend not to wash our french press, I am just too rushed. Maybe if there weren't unwashed dishes in the sink from the night before and I had extra time but that rarely happens!! All the coffee makers are plastic inside. So I decided to get a cheapo one that was on sale at Pennys when I was there buying sheets. It's programmable, has a see through water tank, you can interrupt for one cup, and most importantly, has a cone shaped coffee filter which I definately like better, since I have used both shapes. That was what it had going over the other cheapo models. That's for BF's coffee. For myself I bought a new stainless steel kettle (I melted the last one) and a large Melitta cone shaped filter to make a whole pot. That way we can both make our coffee simultaneously and variably in the AM. For weekends we have our french press.
