Buying new coffee Maker

I'm looking to buy a new coffee maker, nothing special. Just something that brews a good cup of coffee and doesn't start leaking from the bottom after a couple of months. Price range ($30-75).

Metal caftan -- are you talking about a thermal carafe? I've seen those at Starbucks, and I have one from Gevalia, and I love it. It keeps the coffee warm for a couple of hours at least, and since it's not sitting on a burner, like a glass carafe, it doesn't become thick, strong, and burnt-tasting. It stays fresh, as if just brewed. You can find Gevalia offers in magazines (free coffee maker if you buy 1 lb. of coffee for $10 and become a member, but there's actually no obligation, you can cancel anytime). It's a great deal, and their coffee is good, but it's just too expensive (for me) in the long run. As for Starbucks, I don't honestly think that their coffeemakers are any better quality, and hence are surely overpriced. Bug Girl -- sorry I missed your San Francisco show! I used to live there, but didn't have cable and didn't know about cable access TV. I moved away in 1999 and then discovered cable access in Somerville, MA, where they have a great station! Now I'm living in a small New Mexico town with a very lame station. Keep up the good work!

I bought the Cuisinart with the burr grinder about 3 weeks ago and am hoping Bed Bath and Beyond will take it back because it is a PITA. I resisted buying a grind & brew before because I heard they were hard to clean. I was attracted to this one because it advertised that it was easy to clean and that it held 1/2 lb of beans, eliminating one step each day. After about 1 week of use, I got a pot of plain water. I reset everything thinking I had pushed the "bypass grind" button by mistake. It did it again. I took the machine apart and found that the chute the ground coffee goes through was jammed and no coffee could get through to brew. I spent about 1/2 hour unclogging the jam and tried to figure out what I had done wrong. Apparently this happens occasionally. To avoid it,you have to dry all the pieces after washing. I guess the residual moisture from replacing the parts just after washing was enough to solidify the grounds remaining in the chute, and after several days of this, the chute completely closed up. I bought this machine so I would have less work than grinding coffee and then brewing it in my Braun, but frankly, the old system was actually much work overall.

Another Technivorm fan here. We'd been using (and enjoying the coffee from) the Cusinart 12-cup coffee maker we'd gotten when we'd reno'd the kitchen almost 4 years ago. Early last month, DH and I were in the kitchen, and we heard a sizzling or crackling sound, not unlike the sound of coffee that has dripped onto the hot plate. Only thing was, coffee had long since finished brewing and neither of us had poured any coffee in awhile. When I walked over to the coffee maker to take a look, I noticed the display (clock) was out and thought it best to unplug the coffee maker. As I did so, I saw a thin wisp of smoke curling up from the bottom of the machine--eek! Despite the coffee maker being long out of warranty, BB&B took it back (we no longer had the receipt and we absolutely did not want another of the same model, so they issued us a store credit that we'll surely use on something). We were also leery about buying another similar type of coffee maker (e.g. Made in you-know-where). Having read rave reviews about the Technivorm (when we did the kitchen and more recently when W-S started carrying/advertising it), we decided to check it out despite the high price tag. What won us over (besides the glowing reviews) were the facts that it is a very simple machine to set-up (to brew) and take apart (for cleaning after use) and a biggie; Technivorm coffee makers are made by hand, in the Netherlands (not you-know-where). We were drawn to the thought of good, hot coffee to start our days, and just as drawn to the thought of purchasing an appliance that was made well. We thought we'd miss having a timer (we set our coffee maker up the night before--a no-no for coffee afficianado's), but the Technivorm brews so quickly, it's literally ready in minutes. There's no automatic shut-off (brewing mechanism/heater shuts-off at the end of brewing, but the hot plate stays on until it is manually shut off). The lack of an automatic shut-off gave us pause, but we decided the benefits outweighed that one "flaw." Still makes me a little nervous that one of us will forget to flip the switch to off after pouring a last up of coffee, but we're very conscious of being careful about that. All in all, we're enjoying it (ours has the glass carafe, BTW), and feel that it was money well-spent.

Rita, maybe it's a definitional issue -- because depending on how "true coffee affecionados" or coffee snobs are defined, I might agree with you. There are folks who are very narrow in their view of what the proper, best or right way to do anything is and there are those who approach a cuppa as they would engineering a bridge -- and even then think there as only one proper approach. Totally agree that coffeegeek sees plenty of them. On the other hand, I think there are plenty of people who really enjoy making and drinking quality coffee in different forms and getting there in different ways. Like I said -- cold brew in a Mason jar makes good coffee. Doesn't have to be fancy or expensive. But a lot of money is spent of coffeemakers that are semi-disposable and not all that great. I don't think super automatic machines are for everyone either, but I don't think that is because they are inferior. Just different. Agree there are some beautiful machines out there I don't have the patience for. I agree with you on the quality grinder also. We had a conical burr grinder and separate machine -- still have the grinder, just in case, but our machine also has one built in. At any rate, until the OP tells more about her fiance's preferences and whether she's just looking for a 2 in one coffee pot, in which case I have heard more praise for the Technivorm than any other, or if she's thinking of something that might replace the espresso pot, etc. too, all of this may be irrelevant. Interesting that Nepresso got several recs here -- not a grind and brew, but it seems to be taking the lead in a market Keurig started.

Have you ever seen the ads in magazines for the Gevalia coffee? They will send you a free coffee pot and you can cancel at any time. They are great pots!!

I second what pcj42 said. The Gevalia coffee maker does a great job. I asked for one in White, but they sent a black one. But hey, the price is right (free).

As far as the coffee, I did cancel my account, but still order a few boxes from time to time (every three months). I like their Signature Blend. I'll probably go back to regular shipments :)

With the first two "free" Gevalia coffee makers we received, the heating element stopped working immediately. The third one is good. Gevalia was nice about the whole thing.

I bet Gevalia pays about $5 apiece for these low quality coffee makers. You get what you (don't) pay for!

I've gotten the Gevalia coffee makers for years and never had a problem. In fact, I bought a coffee maker for our vacation home and it was a peice of crap. So, I signed up with Gevalia again and took my "old" pot to the vacation house when I got the new one. The old one is still going strong after 8 years!

The third "free" Gevalia coffee maker just failed this morning. We are definitely cancelling the subscription for Gevalia coffee and instead using our $10 coffe pot that we purchased at a local store.

What a joke of a marketing program to sell coffee. What a waste of scarce natural resources and an unecessary contribution to landfills.

Another "free" item that ends up in the dumpster.

I also have the gevalia coffe maker... cancelled the coffee subscription right away... works great. Several neighbors have done the same thing, all with no complaints.

the cheapest French Press on the planet makes a better cup of coffee than any Drip maker on the market for the price of a tea kettle.

if I had to drink drip? I'd agree with the DeLonghi, or the Bunn - good solid machines whose hot plates don't scorch the coffee while you're still adding cream and sugar to your first cup.

Hi, Check out a Cuisinart Brew Central dcc-1200. It is a well built machine and makes very good coffee. It will run about $80 though but is well worth it. It has a 3 yr warranty. These have been rated high for years.

Hi, know matter what coffee maker you buy be sure the steam doesn't come out the top if you plan on having it sit on your counter below your cabinets. The stream will ruin your cabinets.
