If they said fescue then it probably did not include any KBG. They would have said was a mix or a shade/sun blend. It could be this brown color is a result of not getting enough fertilizer in the fall. I am an organic kind of guy and will tell you to apply 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet of alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow). Why that and not chemicals? Because it is too early for chemicals and not too early for organics. Organic are very forgiving while chemicals are not. If you goof up an organic app, no problems. If you goof up a chemical app, you could spend a lot of money restoring it. And if you like the results of the organic fert, you can always add more. If you like the results of the chemical app, you have to wait until fall to add more. Also set your mower to the highest setting (or one notch down from the top). Tall grass resists weeds much better than short grass. Tall grass also needs less water than short grass. Water deeply and infrequently. Deeply means a full inch all at one time. Infrequently means monthly in the cool months transitioning to once every 7 days in the hottest heat of summer. If you get hotter than the hottest heat, then slide it up to every 5 days, but in no case should you ever be watering daily or every other day. The idea is to allow the soil surface to dry completely while there is a deeper reservoir of moisture for the roots to draw from.

Can you have it survive? Maybe. Will you be happy with the way it looks? Maybe. Would it be my choice for a turfgrass in our summer climate? Probably not. If fact, absolutely not unless I had a lot of shade and an irrigation system. If you are choosing fescue because you have too much shade for most warm-season turfgrasses, then I can understand that up to a point, although I'd probably rather have St. Augustine 'Palmetto' under those conditions. It is much more heat-tolerant and stays lush and green during the summer. If I lived in Wisconsin or Iowa, maybe I'd plant fescue grass. Here, no way. Just my opinion but it is based on living here in the southern plains a long time and seeing many people try (and mostly fail) with fescue. I am curious about your choice. Fescue is a cool season grass that tends to go dormant once daytime high temperatures are 85 degrees and higher. Since we have months of warm-season weather here where the temps exceed 85 degrees, I'm wondering why you want a turfgrass that would be dormant for so much of the growing season. The best time to plant fescue grass and have it get well-established probably would be sometime around mid-September to mid-October. It is going to be hard for spring-planted fescue to establish a strong enough root system to be able to handle our hot weather. Starting from sod might help in that regard, but it might not. It depends on how well the sod roots into your current soil. Because fescue tends to decline and die back in our heat, you also need to be prepared to overseed it more or less every year to fill in the thin spots and keep it looking good. Could you baby your fescue and keep it green during the hottest summer weather? Maybe. It just depends. Your chance of success increases if you have some shade. You chance of success increases if you have an irrigation system that could keep the entire lawn well-watered and evenly watered. Of course, I am assuming you wouldn't mind the water bills and that your particular city never has to implement watering restrictions during periods of drought. Even with lots of attention and care, fescue still is what it is---a cool season grass. So, if you choose it knowing that, then you will have to deal with trying to keep a cool-season grass looking good during the hot season. If that's what you want, go for it, but don't be surprised if you are not thrilled with the results. Do people here in Oklahoma grow fescue? Of course they do. I'm just not convinced it is the best choice for most people--although it works to a certain degree for those with lots of shade, very rich and fertile soil, and the ability to water heavily in the summer months. If you choose to grow it, understand that you will need to keep it a little high to help shade the roots and help it stay healthy. Also, you need to fertilize fescue on a cool-season schedule, not on a warm-season schedule, so you will not fertilize your lawn at the same times those of us with warm season grasses do. What is 4p? Did they roll the sod down with a water filled roller? That's kind of important. Grass roots will not grow through the air to find moisture. If your soil is mushy, then it's too wet. If your soil is tan colored, then it's too dry. All it needs is for the very top surface to be moist. You should be able to walk on the sod without sinking in. Long grass is a good thing. That will help the roots. How are you watering? How often and for how long?

Let that turf get about 5 inches tall, and then cut it down to 4 inches. Make sure you recycle the clippings back into the lawn using the mulch setting in your mower. That will also help with moisture retention by creating shade to protect the crowns; the clippings themselves are almost purely water as well. Continue watering deeply and infrequently, but make sure you aren't watering too much and causing rot. Get through the summer as best as you can. In the early fall, assess where you are. If you have some thin spots, go ahead and seed them or buy some more sod to patch. A lot of fescue sod actually has some bluegrass in it, which will spread around to thicken the thin spots. A solid feeding schedule this fall this fall will help that turf recover and dig in for the long haul.
