What are your favorite Christmas memories?
Comments (19)Love reading all your stories! Great thread. My sis & I were 15 months apart and we usually got the same thing every year. One year we "graduated" to 20 inch J.C. Higgins bicycles from Sears cira 1958 or 59. They were identical but we realized after a couple of days that the reason we could tell them apart is because my Dad, excuse me Santa had put the handle bars on Sis's bike upside down lol. Believe it or not, she wouldn't let him change them to the correct position. She liked being backwards LOL. Mother always put a lot of thought into our stockings, the best fruit and candies. Daddy always read from the same Night Before Christmas book when he tucked us in on Christmas Eve. It had this red velvet stuff on Santa's suit on the cover. My birthday is a week before Christmas and I believe that book had been a birthday gift. When you have a birthday that time of year, you get used to birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas wrap LOL. We always were involved with the Mary & Joseph manger scenes at the church, and with the Christmas program as my Dad was the church pianist. I was always Mary, apparently because I was chubby lol. My cousins were the other actors in the play each year. Nice to look back on that period, because I don't see any of them very often now. Mostly when a relative dies, or maybe a reunion once a year. And I remember the year we got Thumbelina dolls (they moved slowly when you cranked them up), my Barbie (it had 3 wigs!), and the year I got a Polaroid Swinger camera and GoGo boots, white of course, LOL. Still have that camera, and it always made terrible pics (black & white only), but my parents went to a lot of trouble to find that one, they were sold out because it was the trend that year. The way they found my camera was because my Dad worked part time that year at the Camera and Craft store, and he was the photographer for the Santa photos. I remember waiting on him at the mall while he worked. He had a full time job, and used that camera store job to buy equipment for his home darkroom. That was a fun experience too, developing film. Now it's mostly digital, but I enjoyed doing that at home when I was a kid. Ended up in printing profession myself and got more than plenty of darkroom work later in life. I enjoyed my kids each Christmas, now I'm making new memories with the 2 small grandsons. They're such a joy! Comments (15)Thanks for sharing your memories with us, Mike. One, (maybe both) of the churches that I attend had a "Blue Chistmas" service planned for 4 p.m. on Sunday Dec. 16, for folks who are feeling the usual joy at Christmas, but mixed with a major slice of sadness along with it, due to a loss of a loved person, or some other painful circumstance, recently. While it is painful to deal with a similar circumstance, such as having someone bring their favourite dog to a Christmas gathering, it is part of one's healing process, as well. It's one more step along the road to moving the memories from painful ones to ones less so. I note that my son, who lost his mother over three years ago, is inclined to refer to something related to her occasionally in recent times, but did not do so for some time after her death. My daughter, executor of her Mom's estate, took the F.C. (female canine) following her Mom's death. The term "dog" really refers to the male of various related species (e.g. fox) ... the term used for a female is one that Gardenweb slaps me on the wrist for if I try to use it. I sometimes had the mini dachsie here when Kathryn was travelling ... she loved to come here, for there were cats to chase (until they got rather used to one another), lots of country to roam and interesting smells to explore ... and (almost) no leash! What could be better! She loved to get into garbage, and got into one of the containers at daughter's a few months ago, got a stomach blockage, which surgery didn't fix ... and they felt it necessary to put her down. At age 14, her days were getting numbered, in any case. But I think that it was more than usually hurtful to both of our offspring, for it was the last living link to their mother. When some of those painful experiences along the road to healing take place, it's helpful if we can go and talk about it to some good friend, especially someone who's been there and done that. ole joyful...See MoreOT......childhood Christmas memories
Comments (19)yoyobon, pretty similar. Here is our recipe: MAMA'S JAM CAKE 1-1/2 c. shortening 1 c. sugar 6 eggs 4-/2 c. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. salt 2 tsp. soda 2 tsp. cinnamon 2 tsp. nutmeg 1 tsp. cloves 1 tsp. allspice 1 c. sour milk (I use buttermilk) 1 c. raisins 1 c. chopped pecans 2 c. blackberry jam Heat oven to 350 degrees, and grease and flour three 9-inch cake pans. Cream shortening and sugar together until fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Sift dry ingredients together and add to batter alternately with milk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Dredge raisins and nuts with a small amount of flour and mix well. Stir in the jam. Bake for 30-40 minutes until cake tests done. Frost with Caramel Icing. My mother used home canned blackberry jam so there was more liquid than in jars from the store, and I think her cakes were probably more moist than mine. I've debated about using a little more milk but haven't had the nerve to try....See More- 10 years ago
