I dont think cherry tree cuttings can be rooted reliably, only cloned thru grafting. Start with a rootstock, plant it, then learn to graft if you'd like a clone. -Eric ----------------------------------------------------

So, are you saying I should wait until it is dormant? ==>>> i will defer on your specific zone as to timing.. but to answer your question .... you will be cutting off a vast majority of its roots ... if its dormant.. or the leaves are fallen off.. then it can get down to business and grow roots for next summer ... with me so far ... which a lot of trees and shrubs do all winter.. but for my ground freeze ... if you do it when it is actively growing.. its going to struggle to maintain the leaves.. with the reduced roots ... in the worst scenario.. it simply sheds those leaves.. and grows some roots.. and may or may not reflush .. but reflushing leaves.. in fall .. is wasting a lot of energy.. that it should be storing for next spring.. rather than releafing.. TIMING is EVERYTHING .... unless you have no other option ... but it is still everything at that point.. but you have other priorities ... i can try again if i am still being vague.. ken

Softwood cuttings strike best (root most easily) from May through late June, Hardwood cuttings are taken in winter, I spoke with the owner of the largest own-root rose nursery, in Northern California. He mentioned that hardwood rose cuttings root most easily when taken from mid-Dec through January, in our region. Some classes strike more easily than others: Old Garden Tea, Hybrid Musk, Noisette and Polyantha class roses strike easily for me, with approx. a 75% success rate. If available, I try and take 3 cuttings for every plant I wish to have. Some roses have a repuation for being hard to root, these include "Secret Garden Musk Climber" and white "Rose of York" a.k.a. Alba Semi- Plena Good luck, I've had great joy from rooting roses and have given dozens of Old Garden Roses away. Luxrosa.

You have to do trial and error with each variety. Generally if a rose has a full center, cut after one round of petals has opened or started to open. Flowers that open too fast and don't keep well should generally be cut in tight bud or even as the sepals start to split. Try cutting one day sooner than you think and see what happens.
