Best time to prune/move a butterfly bush?
Comments (2)Not being in your area, I will toss out my 2 cents worth, but am quite open to being over-ruled - - I would wait until the leaves fell off, watering it well a day or 2 before you plan to move it, then cut it back enough that you can easily move the bush (not as far as you would normally do in the spring, since you might well get more winter-killed branches than you usually do), and shift it to its new location then. In the spring, as soon as you see any new growth, I would cut it back as far as you normally do, taking off any winter-killed branch ends at a minimum. In the mean-time, I would keep the newly transplanted bush watered (on an as-needs schedule, not on a timed schedule - stick a finger down about 2" into the soil, and water only if it is dry at that depth), mulch well ( no deeper than 4", as widely as possible, and no mulch in the couple of inches next to the trunk) and keep watering through the next year....See MoreWhen is the best time to move perennials?
Comments (5)wait!!! first.. water them deeply .. since your facts indicate a hot, dry summer .... you should never move a stressed plant.. let it fill itself up with water.. then go for it ... in my z5 .... i look for weather that is in the 60's .... during the day.. that is when all fear of over-heating a moved plant leaves me ... you are where you are... do it.. when the temps start ebbing downward .... good luck ken PS: i like to tell newbies to fear their success ... and you define that right now.. growing things in excess of specs.. lol .. good job ......See MoreBest Laid Plans-next best time to move
Comments (3)Meant to answer your personal email question but you do not have an email contact through GW!! You might want to change that if you do attempt email contacts :-) Previous answers are good - any time the tree is dormant and the ground workable (not frozen or overly saturated) is a fine time to move/transplant. In my area (actually same as the two above), JM's do not emerge from dormancy until well into March. I'd say you have several months still to accomplish your move :-))...See Morewhen is the best time to plant new fruit bushes and veggies -NYC?
Comments (2)Blueberry and raspberry bushes are very different from the others. This is a good time to plant them. They're like roses. I just transplanted my blueberry a couple of weeks ago. Cool weather and rain is actually nice for them and as they wake up they get right to growing. I would think that strawberries and tomatoes can be planted as well although you may run the risk of frost damage since this winter seems to be hanging on. I suspect that most people would wait, but I'd take the risk just to ensure that I got things going. In fact, I'm planting this weekend. Good luck....See Moresunrisedigger
