Comments (29)No apology is necessary. I'm not a forum sheriff or anything like that. Do whatever you like. I'm just suggesting that it's good form (and common courtesy) to write internet forum comments using proper punctuation and proper language. Everyone makes mistakes and misspellings, that's no problem, but cutesy language and someone's idea of humor or clever abbreviations can turn reading into a drudgery. People come here to help and to learn, Unless I see a particular item to be of immediate interest, I personally avoid comments that require more than normal effort to get through. I'd guess I'm not alone with that. Most people will avoid a post in all caps, or with run on sentences and poor punctuation, or colloquial words or abbreviations, or whatever. Do as you like, I'm just suggesting you consider things from a reader's perspective if you make a post asking for help. The various random utilities you have that you found interfere with one another suggest taking a different approach. If you delete all these and install one good anti-virus program, you'll have better protection and no operating problems. Again, do as you like....See MoreMeant i-5 vs i-7 Intel
Comments (30)Hard to go wrong with a thinkpad laptop. T series is especially popular. Seem to last years. Have to look around to select one as there are lots of thinkpad models with big price differences. The do have an E economy series ThinkPad but it maybe isn't up to the normal quality. Intels latest is 6th generation cpu's but its really really new. The 5th generation is new too. Newer generation processors have better battery life. There are some newer win10 features that require newer intel processors. i5 and i7 are same processors basically - the i7 is the top of speed line. My laptop with i5 2.5ghz cpu was replaced with a i7 2.7ghz.. tell absolutely no difference. I don't know why give those speed ratings as they really are variable speed cpus depending on whats happening and that published speed is the speed the processor runs when overheating... it slows down to that speed. Actually run around 500ghz or slighly more faster which can heat up if run under load constantly. I've had intel, I've had AMD. Intel generally is cooler running which is nice in a laptop. Intel cpu has a wireless mode which some newer tv's have that amd wont have. I love SSD's - bootime here is under 5 seconds to a working desktop on win10.. even faster if I were to enable win10 FastBoot which is sort of a limited hardware & settings only hibernate type shut down. My laptop main drive is a 128gb ssd. I have a second hard drive internally, its a 250gb ssd & on my Wi-Fi accesspoint another spinner hard drive attacted there on usb3 - with AC Wi-Fi its almost as fast as an internal drive, for storage its ok. Acts just like an internal drive... as a mapped drive. Simple stuff. Was given a Vista laptop, slower than molasses with 3gb ram & about 8 yrs old. Oh so painful to use while cleaning it up. I put in my 128 SSD after I spilled hot cocoa on my regular laptop, which needed a couple days to drain and dry... suddenly this old computer with a SSD its about same feel as my i7 16gb ram laptop. Seems mostly as fast for sure until you hit the memory intensive programs....See MoreAny possibility to improve desktop responsiveness?
Comments (13)azmom, I'd really have to assess your current computer to give you a fair and true opinion! The Specs you gave us were very general but lead me to believe it would be better to a new computer. If you did decide to go with upgrading your current computer those upgrades (if you went with a 500GB - 1TB Hybrid) would be in the range of $125-$175. Using an SSD Drive would be slightly higher. If you're able to do the work yourself you wouldn't have to pay someone to install and set up your new Hard Drive and RAM (you could also Clone your old hard drive to the new hard drive or do a clean install). With the price of Laptops these days it might be better to go that route! You can pick up a pretty decent Laptop for around $300-$400. You can definitely get them cheaper, but you will get what you paid for. Example: here is a link to a 2-in-1 Laptop for $379.99 Lenovo 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop I found this in less than a minute searching at Best Buy. I'm sure there are many others out there for a great price. This one has an Intel Core i3 5th Gen. Processor at 2.2GHz, 15.6" Touchscreen, 8GB Ram, 500GB Hard Drive, Backlit Keyboard, Can be a Laptop or Tablet, looks to be preinstalled with Windows 10, etc......See MoreMigrating Windows from HD to SSD
Comments (14)At $100-$150 for something like an 860evo, upgrading to an SSD can be a very worth while upgrade, at a minimal expense, but it's really user and device dependent. If your current HD is having issues or failures (definite possibility), then a replacement drive can certainly provide you with a better computing experience. Don't expect a "brand new pc" experience, but it should be noticeably quicker at booting up your pc, and saving and accessing files than your current HDD. Also, your pc should be quieter as SSD's are silent. File cloning software can certainly save you some time when copying data from a good drive, BUT, if there are drive failures on your current HDD which may have caused some file or OS corruption, that corruption will be copied right over onto the new SSD. That said, as others have eluded to, the age of your pc suggest that the better bang for your buck would be a pc replacement to get some additional newer hardware to go with a new hard drive. However, if price is not a concern, if you upgraded your hd to an SSD now, you can always move that SSD to your newer computer to use as the main drive or backup drive in the future if/when yo do get a new PC so it wouldn't technically be a wasted purchase....See MoreElmer J Fudd
