Where do they find the kids for the cooking shows?

We watch Chopped Junior, and I understand there is another show with kids. These 11 and 12 year olds are amazing! Where do the producers find them? Do they self-apply or what? Annie, are you grooming your grandchildren to win it all (a $10,000 prize, no less!!)

I am floored by some of the work these kids do! Do you watch any of these shows?

You can start an application on line at their web site. I started an application at one time for a different show, but then I learned that I would have to be in New York for the entire month of February, and I would not be able to handle the weather there at that time. Also, I would have had to take off from work for four weeks, but I might have been doing freelance work at that time.

Some shows advertise on Craigslist, at least in Los Angeles - not sure about East Coast shows. We need a West Coast food network. I call the Food Network the Salt & Pepper network, and the West Coast version could be Soy and Chili Chili Sauce.

My cooking show tastes have changed significantly over the past few years. I used to prefer shows that displayed cooking a meal start to finish, but now those are relegated to background noise at best. If there's meaningful discussion about ingredient choices or cooking methods I'm all ears, but beyond that the recipes are a google search away and I no longer feel I gain anything from watching someone dice an onion or throw a chicken cutlet on a grill pan. Sorry Giada, Ina, and especially Ree, but while you've each got excellent recipes which I almost consider T&T before even trying, your shows have become painful for me to watch. Unlike others who have commented above, I now actually prefer some of the competition shows. Chopped, Iron Chef... what can be more inspirational than watching accomplished chefs pull creativity out of their @sses under the pressure of competition and time constraint, and see what works and what doesn't? Much more interesting to me than watching someone execute a recipe. If you were to judge by my DVR or dinner table you'd see that I take the most inspiration from shows that "observe food" and at most give a few minute Cliff's note of the preparation. They give me an idea from which I can google and/or improvise on my own. To that end, while the goofy catch phrases and grease-dripping-down-the beard are a major turn-off, Guy's DD&D has influenced my kitchen most in recent memory. It's typically nothing gourmet (heck, look at the name of the show) but it's got some good looking food. I'm also a growing fan of Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown because it's so not boring.

The dad probably did not know the kid was making the call. In some cities, after the first 1-2 non emergency calls from a minor they start to charge for the calls. I'd like to know if the dad gave in or made him eat it. Or go to bed without dinner! :-) T

This thread, which I didn't catch the first time around, made me think. In general, I cook to eat and feed my family. However, I do enjoy baking for special occasions. I think that if I didn't work outside the home I would cook more...and be more adventurous. But, I work and have a long commute so by the time I get home I have to make fast meals with little time for creativity or major prep work. So, we eat a lot of frozen veggies--as is out of the bag, pre-cooked meats warmed up, pasta, soup, occasionally waffles/pancakes/eggs, potatoes, etc. I.e., for the most part things that I can cook fast. One up side to this is that our meals haven't changed that much w/o a kitchen since we do have a MW, Toaster Oven, and hot plate to cook with! One very big downside to this, though, is that my children are not learning to cook like I did from my mom. Back on topic... After finding this site and reading about zones, I realized that one thing that I really wanted was a baking center. So when my kitchen was being designed I had it in the back of my head that whatever we ended up with had to have an area I could designate my "Baking Zone", preferably near the ovens--with room to roll out dough, spread out cookie sheets, and have cookie cutters spread out all at the same time! The other thing I got from this site was our window...having the window down to the counter (OK, not cooking-related, but a very important design element!) Our very first plan that our KD came up with had input from us...but a very naive/ignorant us! (Before GW...BGW!) Then....I found this site.....and the changes began. Actually, I posted that original plan and asked for help (and also asked my KD to start over w/no island) Many, many people here helped me come up with a plan over several weeks (months?). We finally came up with a plan that has changed little since then. Interestingly, when I took away the island "must have", my KD came up with a plan very similar to what we came up with here. The only 3 differences were (1) no mini peninsula, (2) a 36" pantry cabinet rather than a corner pantry, and (3) no separate Message Center cabinets. My KD wasn't completely happy w/our differences, but she, wisely I thought, told me to go home and mock up what I wanted to see how it would work (same advice I got here!) Well, the mock up was great! It proved that I did indeed want the mini peninsula (I liked it so much I left the mock up in place until demo and used it!) When I told her the results, she didn't argue, she accepted it telling me it's my kitchen, so ultimately it's up to me. So in the end, my design was/is based on what I wanted, not what the KD wanted. [If only someone else had measured my kitchen and she was given more authority, I think a lot of subsequent problems would have been avoided.] Our kitchen isn't done yet, but it's close...so I can't yet tell you how it is going to work for us...but we are so...

I was mostly taught to cook by watching, but Mom did pass a couple recipes on to me. Not that my family cares all that much... she never was the best cook. Too Irish I suppose. My Gran, on the other hand, took her recipes with her to her grave. Dad is still bummed nobody can make her rolls or cinnamon buns. Regarding working in a restaurant... I suppose I learned more there than I did at home. Especially about prep and food storage. It taught me new methods that my Mom would never attempt. It also taught me to rely less on salt and to use actual seasonings instead such as herbs. ... And I think a stint as a prep kid should be mandatory for high school graduation. Kids here have to have volunteer hours to graduate and while that's great there's no comparison between shelving books at the library and learning how to feed yourself.

LOL, I wondered too, because the Monkey Princess wants to be famous for cooking, and she thinks she could be on one of those shows. I told her to just figure out how to start her own YouTube channel and she could get famous and people would watch her every week! Madi could be sous chef and Bud and Maci could be official tasters, LOL.

It
is very expensive to produce a TV show. The producers cannot take any chances.

I think the kids on the shows are
very talented, but I am not sure everything is that spontaneous.

I think everything is coached,
rehearsed, practiced, tried, edited, ---- many times.

When the kids run to the pantry, it
seems that they know exactly where everything is. They know exactly how all the
appliances work, the buttons, the knobs.

Do you really think that every kid
can plate their food better than many famous chefs?

I think that every contestant who walks onto the Chopped set gets a full tour of the appliances and the pantry before they start, and I'm not sure that ruins the intent of the show at all. As for plating, well, some of the adults on the show don't always nail the mark, and all the kids don't all excel either. There are precious few dcarch's in the world!

Of course there are things that go on behind the scenes, but that doesn't diminish the kids' talent. Not to mention how entertaining some of them are! Dcarch, you sound a little jealous. ;)

"Birdsong and her culinary team of as many as 26 people teach the kids
cooking classes in between episodes, walking them through the
techniques they need to succeed and giving them safety training. The MasterChef
classroom is identical to the set — same ovens, same food processors —
so the contestants can get familiar with the equipment. The culinary
team squeezes in as many classes for the kids as they can given the
short amount of time children are legally allowed to be on the Paramount
lot every day. “The kids are here to learn as much as they can the
whole time,” she says.

Birdsong says she doesn’t teach the kids
exactly what to do for a challenge, but rather shows them a basic and
(most importantly) the fastest way to accomplish things like make a
sauce or filet a fish. There are lots of different ways to make a
piecrust, for example, but one way is probably best when you’re racing
the clock. The kids have the option of writing down and memorizing
anything from class.

“We teach a very basic application that works
in our environment and that’s what they tend to stay with, and it’s
their choice if they go off that mark [during a challenge],” she says,
adding that the adults who receive the same classes are more likely to
revert to their personal cooking methods."

That explains a lot, Cindy. Sometimes when a contestant on one of those shows gets eliminated, they thank the panel for the opportunity to learn so much. I've wondered how they learned anything just in the competition, other than the comments from the judges. Now I know.

It makes perfect sense that the contestants on any of those shows be given a tour of the kitchen, pantry, and appliances.

(a little OT) What I've wondered is if they're given pots of boiling water to begin with, or if they have to wait for the water to boil? Or the oven to pre-heat, or the oil to heat up in the deep fryer.

Yes, I've read that the ovens are going and so is the fryer. Not sure about boiling water, tho. Maybe induction hob? Or heated water?

When they say, " you have 30 minutes to make this dish and the time starts now!"

They probably give the contestants 2 hours actual. the 30 minutes and the final count down is just for drama.

Drama is what they want.
