I've never had so many blind shoots
Comments (6)Every spring is different up here in the mountains of Nocal. I no longer prune by the calendar, but follow the rule of waiting until the forsythias bloom. I've noticed that in some years they bloom two weeks ealier than others. If I wait, I don't see as much blind growth. What I find interesting is that the forsythias will bloom at different times ... by a few days, or even weeks, in different parts of town, which says something about the microclimates. We had a warm January this year and a lot of people went ahead and pruned their roses, but since my forsythias hadn't shown any sign of blooming, I waited. I am glad I did because February and March were unusually cold for this area. I see very little blind growth since I started following this old rule. This timing may only be true for the colder climates, but it seems to work for me. I usually wait until the estimated last frost date for this area before I feed the plants to encourage any new growth. It's kind of a conservative approach, but it seems to protect the new growth. Comments (12)Here 'tis: Loquat Chutney 6lbs of topped and stoned loquats (weighed after prepping) 1 quart vinegar 4lbs sugar 1lb mixed raisins and white raisins 3 tablespoons salt 2 tablespoons ground ginger 2 teaspoons allspice or pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon cayenne powder 12 peppercorns 12 cloves 2 oz finely chopped garlic Dice loquats, leaving the skin on. Boil loquats and raisins in the vinegar for 15 minutes. Add the sugar and boil a further 15 minutes. Add remaining ingredients and boil until thick and brown. Now, Australian/British practice is to ladle hot chutney into hot, sterilised jars and place sterile lids on them. We do not as a rule process jams and relishes. Comments (21)Big box and discount stores often have a different number. Sometimes there are slight differences in the model, others it's just an identifier that you got it at Costco. Maybe do a shout out to Trevor or Jakvis who might know how to unpack the model numbers? From looking at the listings I've been able to figure out that the "30" is for a nominally thirty inch wide range. The 4B seems to be for four burner. (The 36" one is 6B.) I think the V2 is for the height of the back--vertical level two. (edit: Correction from John_Williams50--V2 is for Version 2) "SS" on other appliances is often "stainless steel", but I don't know if that's so for BS.
