Oh my goodness, the best thing in the entire world. Little southern girl like me was probably fed banana pudding at the first Sunday dinner after the day I was born. I am anxious to see who has never eaten this before. Glenda, I bet your banana pudding would be some of the best in the world also.

I have a friend whose idea of banana pudding is instant sugar free,fat free vanilla pudding with a few bananas sliced in it topped with fat free, sugar free whipped topping. Yuck!

Once you enjoy the homemade, from scratch, there's a world of difference, between the boxed pudding mix.

My sister used to make hers with condensed milk, etc.

I love banana pudding and make it like my DM did. Vanilla wafers on the bottom, then cooked custard, then bananas, then layer it again.

Then cover it with a meringue, not something out of a box or a can.

My family loves it.I make mine from scrath too but I always use the pudding recipe on the vanilla wafer box and use canned milk for part of the milk.If it's from a boxed pudding mix I'd rather not have it.An older lady friend at church added sweetened condensed milk to hers and it was delicious.I had her recipe but it has gotten missplaced over the years.
My mother always made it for family get togethers.When she would bring it to my house my boys would sneak in the kitchen when she wasn't looking and hide it.As she got older and discovered boxed and instant foods she would make it from a pudding mix.We would eat it but I didn't like it as much.One Thanksgiving she brought it as usual and as usual the boys,now grown,got it and hid it.When it came time to have desert they went through their usual little game with her then confessed.She dished them up a big bowl and they both took a big bite about the same time and the look on their faces was priceless!I thought they were going to throw up but they politely said,"Grandmother,this tastes different.What did you do to it?" She said,"Well I was mixing up the pudding and saw that it wasn't going to be enough but I didn't have another box of vanilla pudding so I mixed in a box of BUTTERSCOTCH! She said it's good huh?" Of course being the sweethearts they are they agreed with her but it went down the garbage disposal when she left.LOL I couldn't even taste it.The smell was enough to turn me off.LOL

Maybe it is a Iowa dessert too. I remember having it alot when I was growing up. That was a long time ago!

I've never had it before. I've seen the recipe on the vanilla wafers box. Must be a southern thing. LOL My friend D'Ann who was born here in Fl makes it.

Funny--I had Banana pudding today at a buffet served in individual cups (so cute)! Mom always made it from scratch, but I don't have her recipe!

Tried and true banana pudding is a custard, that is stirred over low heat, until it coats the back of the spoon, for a long time, then layered with vanilla wafers and bananas, and custard poured over the top. I'm not a meringue person, and don't do that thingie.

MIL used to instead of banana's would use pineapple tidbits, which was delicious

I have never had banana pudding, and I never heard of it till recently. I loved my mother's homemade banana cream pie and make it myself now and then.

I made a Paula Dean version with Chessman cookies once that was SO good.

To me Banana Puding was made by Jell-O. These others were delicious desserts made with pudding. But I'm a California girl and my peeps were country, not Southern.

Well, I just kinda feel like that anybody who hasn't had banana pudding by the time that they're 65 should have had it on their "bucket list" a very long time ago! LOL

Made from scratch here, too. My 23 year old grand son loves mine and I try to treat him with one about everytime he's home from a welding job.

Banana pudding is good. I have made Paula Dean's recipe too. It is rich. I like meringue on mine. I haven't made any for some time.

I love banana pudding...my husband's favorite dessert, but I don't care for it with meringue on top...just custard, vanilla
wafers and bananas, in layers.

A friend of mine used to make a similar one with crushed pineapple instead of bananas and put meringue on it.

My husband's faborite dessert is banana cream pie. I make or buy him one every birthday. The hardest thing is findiNg banana flovor pudding. Sometimes I sneak in vanilla. I prefer cooked pudding mix, none of that "instant" stuff-too runny.

I haven't had it in forever, but I loved it. No meringue for me either. I just don't like the texture of meringue...on anything.

Banana Pudding is my family's favorite dessert. My mother makes it for our birthdays rather than cake, and yes, she makes hers from scratch. Nothing like it!!!

Is there any difference between the custard for banana pudding and the custard in banana cream pie? Haven't had either one for a long time, but it seems like they are the same thing? I never put cookies (vanilla wafers) IN my pudding, but I've made pie 'crust' out of them.

I love banana pudding and can eat a big bowl full of it at one time. I guess that's the reason I don't make it often. I make a complete pig out of myself when there's banana pudding in my fridge. It's just one of those foods that I have to have a bite of every time I see it and I never can stop with just one bite. Glenda...hope you're not at the pool too long, as I can't wait for your recipe. I think I will make some over the weekend, as I plan to get back on my diet on Monday!!!

It never occurred to me that there were people who had never heard of banana pudding. I'm shocked!!! LOL!
I make mine from scratch. About 20 or so years ago someone brought some to a Christmas party at work and it was called Easy Banana Pudding. It was made with French Vanilla instant pudding and called for Eagle Brand milk. It was definitely different from the other pudding, but it was mighty tasty. I have made it a few times, but haven't done so in a long time. I still prefer the original recipe pudding.

Here's my recipes:
Banana Pudding
¾ c sugar
3Tbsp. all purpose flour
dash of salt
4 eggs
2c milk
½ tsp. vanilla extract
5 to 6 ripe bananas, sliced
Vanilla Wafers

Combine ½ c sugar, flour and salt in top of a double boiler. Mix in 1 whole egg and 3 egg yolks; stir in milk. Cook, uncovered, over boiling water, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat; add vanilla. Spread small amount on bottom of 1½ qt. casserole. Cover with a layer of vanilla wafers. Top with a layer of sliced bananas. Pour about 1/3 of custard over bananas. Continue to layer wafers, bananas and custard to make three layers of each, ending with custard.

Beat remaining 3 egg whites til stiff, but not dry. Gradually add remaining ¼c. sugar and beat til mixture forms stiff peaks. Pile on top of pudding covering entire surface.
Bake in preheated 425°F oven for 5 minutes or until lightly browned. Serve warm or chilled.
** note**
Sometimes I don't put the meringue on; I just crumble a few vanilla wafers to make crumbs and put across the top.

I almost always double the recipe because it doesn't last long either around the house or any pot luck I take it to.

Here's the recipe I have that uses sweetened condensed milk:
1 lg. box French Vanilla instant pudding
1 can Eagle Brand milk
1 (9oz) carton Cool Whip
1 box Nabisco vanilla wafers
6 large bananas, sliced

Mix pudding according to pkg. directions and let stand for a few minutes to set. Add Eagle Brand milk and Cool Whip. Mix well and pour half of mixture over a layer of vanilla wafers and bananas. Make another layer of vanilla wafers and bananas and pour remaining pudding mixture over this. Crumble wafers on top or top with additional Cool Whip.

On this pudding I put both Cool Whip and crumbled vanilla wafers on top.

I don't necessarily use the brands mentioned in the above recipes. They were just the ones mentioned when I got the recipes.

Am almost 60, here. Of course, at my age, I've heard of banana pudding--even though I'm from 'up north' it was a popular dessert when I was a kid. But I detest anything with even a smidge of banana in it, so I've never eaten it, myself.

Haven't had it in years, but "the real thing" is soooo good.

I'm well over 60 I'm afraid, and I never even heard of banana pudding let alone had any. Sounds great...can you sub Splenda or Truvia in place of the sugar for a for diabetic DH?
