Bare root roses?

Have wondered if there is an industry standard concerning storage. How long can a rose be kept in cold storage before viability is compromised.

I ordered from Regan's Nursery for the first time this year. The rose is an older variety not in current production at own root nuseries. It's an own root but still sold bare root. I'm comfortable with bare roots and never experienced a problem. All of these were newer roses that were most likely being sold faster.

Anyone with thoughts on this? Has anyone experienced less than stellar results ordering an older variety.

It has been said many times here, but is worth repeating, that many older varieties, particularly of HTs, were never meant to be sold own-root, and suffer from a lack of vigor.

Without knowing the variety, that is my best guess. I know that in my climate, there are almost no roses that will thrive own-root if they winterkill at all. They don't have enough vigor to replace what dies off.

Thanks for responding Mad. It's Carefree Celebration and will grow well as own root here.

I'm not concerned about Regan's Nursery at all. Just curious how long a nursery will hold a bare root in storage and when does viability decrease. Do they throw them out after a certain time or passed down the line to lesser quality mail order nurseries? Are they recycled as big box store body bags. I've never heard any thing about this.

I used to have The Alnwick Rose. I've attempted growing this rose twice and in conclusion, there are three things that I don't like about it: 1) Most of the time, the scent is not always present. A huge let down. 2) the flower form is small and the petals scatter quickly. 3) I don't like the colour - it fades quickly to a glistering white/ pale pink colour. The only good thing about this rose is that it repeats quite fast.

I used to keep them in the basement. It's a walkout basement, so moving them in and out wasn't an issue, and the basement is cool and damp. Instead of cones and mulch, I covered them with wet towels, so it did help to keep them somewhere the towels didn't dry out immediately. I do see a problem with the cones and mulch in that you can't easily check to see if they are leafing out, and you may damage the new growth in the great uncovering. Just thinking out loud here, since I vastly prefer planting bareroots at the proper, late winter time, so they don't need any covering here.

Austin, I’m so happy to hear from you, and that you’’ll still be growing your cherished Dark Lady! I hope you have found a great place in Austin, TX close to your family with a nice yard for gardening. I think you’re doing all the right things to baby those late season bare roots. Mounding mulch or coarse soil over the base is so important to prevent dessication. Somtimes I’d cut out the bottom of a nursery pot, invert it over the base and fill it with fine mulch so that the mound would stay in place. When Winnie Edmunds owned Edmunds she recommended everyone to cut the canes to half the length even though it seemed barbaric (her word). I think it’s a good practice, but if you already have buds swelling then they are probably already doing fine. I remember when we were probably the only two from this forum actively posting from the DFW area. Well, I have moved too! I’ve relocated to near the Sacramento area, also to be closer to my family, especially my mother who is 85 (but still in great health). I was told I could bring roses to California if they were bare root…so my friend and I dug out about 80 of my roses, cut them all extremely short and the movers drove them to my new house. I’m very much looking forward to starting a new garden , everyone’s roses look great here, there’s not a trace of blackspot or RRD to be found! And no one in the neighborhood grows the dreaded Knock Out, they all have better things to grow!

Carefree Celebration is a kicker of a bush. Has almost as much vigor as a knock out. You can actually chop that one down every year to stubs and it will re-grow 3 feet (if not more) easily in zone 5-6.

Your questions on viability is one that I am curious about as well. Please share whatever you run into.

With respect to Regan, here's what I know (and yes I know you are not concerned about them) : they receive their roses in November-December from mostly California growers. They only ship through April, anything not shipped by then they simply pot up and sell at their actual brick and mortar nursery.

I'll be planting a potted own root CC next Spring...CC does great for my local friend so hopefully it does well here too... And for you to Patty!
