Do meyer lemons lose sweetness when too big?

I have small meyer lemon tree that I've been growing in a container for several years, and I usually get a dozen or two fruits from it - not a lot for folks who grow big trees, but perfect for an apartment dweller.
I didn't get around to picking some of the lemons until they were fairly large - almost the size and shape of small navel oranges - the lemons were very yellow, and had lost the tapered ends that you usually associate with the classic lemon shape. I also noticed that the juice had none of the sweetness I usually associate with meyer lemons - it was quite sour with just a hint of bitterness.
I was just wondering whether I had let the lemons get too big or over-ripe - and when is the optimal time to pick meyer lemons - for example, should they be completely yellow before picking? I don't want to pick them when they're too small, because I want to get some good juice - but I do like that distinctive sweetness.
TIA for any advice.
