Dark Spots On Pothos' Leaves...What's Wrong? Please Help!
Comments (67)Re houseplants: most spoiled foliage is caused by physiological issues, over/under-watering, oedema, nutritional toxicities/ deficiencies, light levels, ...... with subsequent populations of fungi acting as opportunists as opposed to acting as causal agents. In this thread, oedema, a physiological disorder, is the main actor. Dead animals don't cause vultures, but they do provide a reason for vultures to congregate. IOW, lesions caused by physiological disorder often provide the consistently moist conditions for a period lasting long enough to ensure incubation and germination of fungal spores. This isn't to say that fungal conditions do not commonly appear in plants as pioneer pathogens, only that evidence of physiological disorder is far more common than direct evidence of pioneer populations of fungi. Plant pathologists often describe the disease process using a 4-sided figure called the disease tetrahedron (think “pyramid – 3 sides + the bottom/ base”). Each side of the tetrahedron represents an essential part of the infection process. There must simultaneously be a virulent pathogen (capable of infecting the plant) that is genetically capable of recognizing its host. Either the environment must be conducive to the development of the pathogen, or the pathogen must be able to stress/weaken the plant. The 4th requirement is the time required for diseases to develop and spread. Whenever conditions are such that any one (or more) of the 4 requirements is missing from the equation, there is no immediate threat. Since the best medicines are prophylactic, the grower who makes sure plants are healthy and not stressed is ahead of the game. Biotic diseases are better able to overcome the natural defenses of plants weakened by stress that occurs when the plant is forced to deal with cultural conditions near, at, or beyond the limits the plant is genetically programmed to deal with. Comments (6)I do see what looks like little black ants crawling up the tree, and back down but they are never on the leaves. no more than 3 or 4 at a time. I am assuming they are ants, because I did have a black ant problem in my house a few years back, next to my sink and kitchen window. I do see a large bug on the leaves every so but never more one at a time. Are spiders harmful to the trees? I constantly have spiders in them. making webs until I water them or it rains. The soil is a little dry on the top but it is fairly most when I stick my finger in it. The temps have been fairly cool here for this time of the year in the low 70âÂÂs to upper 70âÂÂs. It is starting to warm up. I know in the summer that cement will get very hot as will the weather but it also rains here almost every day in the summer with an afternoon shower. And cools it down a good bit. I will check out the root ball and trim the dead parts of the tree and get rid of tags and do the spray you recommend. I have bug guy coming to look at my property this weekend to help with my recent flea problems and prep for termite season. Maybe that will help get rid of any pest I am not seeing. Comments (4)joy I would remove all soil from the roots and repot to better draining mix. It looks like typical peat/very peaty soil. It has some perlite in it, but very little of it. Try to get bag of perlite (could be pumice if available) and mix with C&S soil in 1:1 ratio to improve drainage. Use same size of pot. I would also use topdressing - layer of gravel, to keep lowest leaves from touching the wet soil. Not crucial, but helps. When watering, take inner pot out and let it drain for at least 1/2hrs before putting back - looks like you are using cachepot/decorative outer pot. Do not water unless mix has almost completely dried out - use bamboo skewer or chopstick; stick deep inside of pot. Leave for few min. If dry when pulled out - time to water. If not, wait few more days. I would keep it in best light possible. Most succulents need min. 6hrs of sunlight for best growth. If you don't have bright spot, consider supplemental lights. Etiolated plants will have longer and weaker stems than neccessary, become top heavy, loose some color. If that happens, it could be decapitated and re-rooted; best done in spring when in active growth....See Morekwie2011
