Help me id whats wrong with my sick tree

Hi everyone. I am totally new to gardening and growing stuff at all. I got a few citrus trees and blue berry trees from home depot last August. I am growing them in JD barrels. Since my yard is prone to flooding. All my trees are doing will but one of them. This guy did had a lot of damage to his leaves when i got him from the store from insect eating them, but he started to grow new leaves after I got it home and in the pot. It started to flower about a month ago and had a fair amount of new growth. We had a few light rains and strong winds past few weeks. I had not had a chance to check on the plants when I went out side this guy looked like this. I like to find out what wrong with it so if it is insects or something else I can stop it before it spreads to my other Orange, satsuma and lemon trees.

I don't think you have anything wrong with your vine. Based on the leaf appearance, rampancy and seeding habits, it sounds like C. terniflora or Sweet Autumn clematis. Considered invasive in many parts of the east, it's a big, aggressively growing vine that benefits from a severe pruning (like down nearly to the ground) annually. The bleaching or discoloring of various sections of leaves and stems is likely due to more exterior vining tendrils simply wrapping around and strangling the others. I wouldn't worry about it. If you cut it back hard next spring and thereafter, I doubt you'll see this problem again.

Hi Rebecca, I think you might have had already ID-ed your own plant correctly. It looks like a very weak and etiolated thyrsiflora. These plants are very resilient and are quite difficult to kill, unless you give them constant attention and overwater them. My question is how does the roots look like when you potted it up? As you said it was only a cutting when you received it. If there is no roots in existence, your plant will eventually wilt into nothing. If you do ever see signs of roots, do not pluck off the lower leaves until they are completely dry, as that what these plants do, they cannibalize their lower leaves to produce more energy for its stem and roots. If you pull away semi-wilted leaves, you are essentially removing food from the plant that it still can utilize. My last piece of advise is, stay away from recycling organic soils. Use sterilize new soil as much as you can if you want to grow plants in containers, or sterilize the soil yourself by adding boiling water to it and microwave the soil for about 3-4 minutes - cool it then plant your plant into it. I'm also afraid to say you might be drowning your plant with too much DE powder. It looks like a pudding covering the soil, that's not how soil should be for healthy plants. Happy Growing. Bernard

looks like a sicilian white fig to me, are they rasberry colored inside? as far as fertilizer goes , i like to add some new soil on top of the planter and add oscmote fertilizer for potted plants. i guess you could use the hole drilling method with oscmote. but i would just use 10-10-10 gently and maybe add a little fast acting or hydrated lime for calcium or even bone meal mixed in the hole i doubt if the bone meal will wash out you really can't go wrong with miracle grow. i imagine the tomato growing formula would work out well.

If you are growing anything in a pot or container then all you want to use is "potting soil" - no garden soil, no planting compost. Potting soils have been formulated specifically for container culture and address the unique requirements of growing in containers. But not all potting soils are created equally - there are both good and bad products on the market, which is why the suggestion to make your own often comes up :-) How practical that is to do for a single plant is the question!! In general, you want a bark based potting soil (rather than just all peat, like Miracle Gro) that offers both a good textural component as well as durability, resulting in both fast drainage and adequate moisture retention. Something like the 5-1-1 mix often referred to in the Container Gardening forum. And you may want to change out your fertilizer as well. Dry organics - like the E.B. Stone - are not very efficient for containers. These need to be broken down into a plant usable form by soil organisms and there just aren't sufficient populations of soil organisms in any kind of potting soil to manage that well. No real "soil", no soil organisms :-)) A water soluble fertilizer will work much better. I use Dyna Gro's Liquid Grow but even Miracle Gro would work. The alternative is to apply a slow release fertilizer like Osmocote once at the beginning of the season. As to the ID, there's an awful lot of LFH that look like that. 'Rhapsody" is a possibility.

Look at the stems, branches, tops and bottoms of leaves. Do you see any bugs? It doesn't look too bad to me from the photos but does look dry. The brown branches are goners so you can clip those. I would remove the green plastic tape holding your tree to the post. That's a favorite place for mealy bugs and scale to hide. (It often looks just fine but when you remove it there are lots of bugs underneath it.) You can give it a blast of horticultural oil (mix with water and spray on) on a cloudy cool day. What are the other conditions? How hot does that cement get? Does the cement reflect a lot of heat up into the plant? You also might want to gently slide the rootball out of the pot to check the roots.

I do see what looks like little black ants crawling up the tree, and back down but they are never on the leaves. no more than 3 or 4 at a time. I am assuming they are ants, because I did have a black ant problem in my house a few years back, next to my sink and kitchen window. I do see a large bug on the leaves every so but never more one at a time. Are spiders harmful to the trees? I constantly have spiders in them. making webs until I water them or it rains. The soil is a little dry on the top but it is fairly most when I stick my finger in it. The temps have been fairly cool here for this time of the year in the low 70Ã¢ÂÂs to upper 70Ã¢ÂÂs. It is starting to warm up. I know in the summer that cement will get very hot as will the weather but it also rains here almost every day in the summer with an afternoon shower. And cools it down a good bit. I will check out the root ball and trim the dead parts of the tree and get rid of tags and do the spray you recommend. I have bug guy coming to look at my property this weekend to help with my recent flea problems and prep for termite season. Maybe that will help get rid of any pest I am not seeing. Any other tips or suggesting for dealing with potted citrus

Spiders are fine, they will not harm your tree! In fact they are incredibly beneficial to the garden. If you have ants on your tree, that might also be a sign you have aphids. Aphids can usually be taken care of by spraying under the leaves with a hose. It looks like maybe you have had some grasshoppers munching on your leaves, or some other chewing insect. Also, how often and with what do you fertilize?

I was about two weeks off, from start of spring for my first fertilization. I am using slow release fertilizer so I don't burn them in the pots. use miracle grow fruit and tree fertilizer. looks I recently sprayed a organic pesticide soap No more insect activity expect spiders and the ants seem to have disappared after I put some ant baits next to the pots. This tree is doing a little better but any new growth turns black immediately and dies. My other tress are now show signs of what i think is Anthracnose or Botrytis rot. I take pictures of them tomorrow and post them.
