Hydrangeas producing flower buds now?
Comments (2)No, not much if we are talking of a handful of flowers per bush. Reblooming hydrangeas can react to the lower temperatures by producing new bloomage so, yes, they could produce new blooms quite late. A few old wood blooming hydrangeas also react like that but usually, it is a small number of blooms per plant. I have some unnamed hydrangeas that bloom only in Spring but, once every few years, they will also produce blooms (1 or 2 total for the whole plant) from mid Oct thru early November, meaning before they go dormant in late November. If the whole plants are exhibiting lots of bloomage then that could affect bloomage in Spring. In such a case, I would try to stop all amendments and fertilizers by the end of June in future years... to see if that helps make them go dormant....See MoreSomalense seedlings are almost 5 weeks old
Comments (28)Thanks Cynthia some are definitely getting quite chubby. They seem to like to stay buried in the soil while my obesums at this age tend to start getting taller. Ladylotus, these are not under LEDs. I have them under fluorescent T8 lamps (3 bulbs). My grow rack is somewhat of a hodge-podge. It has 4 different fluorescent fixtures attached in a very ghetto like manner, but it gets the job done! The shelves are really only tall enough to keep seedlings on until they reach about a year old. I really need to find a lighting solution for all my seedlings when they hit juvenile age. So I am shopping around looking at LEDs and T5HOs with that in mind. Martin, I agree that their growth has been somewhat stunted in comparison with my arabicum and obesum seedlings. I normally pick out 2 to 3 seedlings to watch that I think will be frontrunners in the group. I have to say that they don't look any bigger to me at 8 weeks than they did at 5 weeks. I might try giving them a very small dose of fertilizer to see if that triggers any response. I will have another picture update in 2 to 3 weeks. Comments (6)I thought maybe the soil had too much fertilizer in it. ==>>> this is very possible.. because contrary to our best wisdom ... you insisted on using such ... but it has nothing to do with a plants natural cycles of setting bud in fall ... what worries me.. is whether they are just now doing such ... or whether you just noticed .... it would be very late in the season in my z5 for this to be happening now.. and i would fear they would not harden off properly.. before the first FREEZE ... and that could be a fert problem .... but i dont know how it all works in your z7 .... ken...See MoreWill calliflower produce if it has no head as of yet? (zone 4.5)
Comments (11)Yes the white Cauliflower head does need to be protected or they will brown in the sun. I ordered some Cheddar cauliflower from Johnny's this year and the head is orange and does not require the blanching. The DTMs listed for veggies that are typically transplanted like Broccoli and Cauliflower are from transplant. Peter - Sarah's Choice has fairly short vines compared to pumpkins and watermelons that I have grown....maybe 10' max. I'm going to plant 3 hills in a 4x8 bed and they will probably spill out into the paths a little. The first time I planted them I put 5 seeds in a 3x3 bed and got about 15 nice melons and the critters got a few to boot. Put some on your list for next year!...See MoreTom Ho
