Piano Players - Trying to read sheet music. . .
Comments (14)Don't worry about learning one hand at a time. My son's piano teacher, with whom he has been studying for 10 years, always suggests starting out a new piece one hand at a time. Not learning it to perfection or the point of memorization, but just to be familiar enough to be comfortable. Here is an explanation from Wikipedia about the reason for different clefs: "The use of three different clefs makes it possible to write music for all instruments and voices, even though they may have very different tessituras (that is, even though some sound much higher or lower than others). This would be difficult to do with only one clef, since the modern staff has only five lines, and the number of pitches that can be represented on the staff, even with ledger lines, is not nearly equal to the number of notes the orchestra can produce. The use of different clefs for different instruments and voices allows each part to be written comfortably on the staff with a minimum of ledger lines. To this end, the G-clef is used for high parts, the C-clef for middle parts, and the F-clef for low parts - with the important exception of transposing parts, which are written at a different pitch than they sound, often even in a different octave."...See MoreIf You Were Able What Would You Like to Learn to Do?
Comments (52)Elmer, I spent a summer in France with a family, after my junior year of HS. Beginning of senior year, first day of French class, within minutes the teacher noticed the huge difference in my fluidity (if not fluency). Immersion is key. But here’s an odd thing. When I took German, I was in Switzerland, French-speaking area, and my teacher was Austrian. We couldn’t figure out why I had a North German accent. Oh, another thing I think I’d like to learn is to knit or crochet. But, I know I’d never have patience to make much more than a scarf. A really long scarf. I’d just keep going, to keep my hands busy while bingeing on “Killing Eve” or whatever our latest obsession is. My grandmother was a fine and prolific knitter. She made 8 afghans for her grandchildren, which get a lot more use than the sweaters. I have a wonderful hat and scarf from her, though, that I still use after 50 years. She tried to teach me once, but I was still in that “i want to bike uptown and hang out with my friends” stage....See MoreWhen you are single and self quarantining
Comments (40)Amy, I am so sorry for your breakup and job loss. That is terrible timing to coincide with a period of uncertainty and self isolation. You may want to look into free online classes just for fun. Coursera , et al have some great offerings thta are fun to watch, lend structure to the day and provide a sense of accomplishment. The Yale well being one is getting tons of press these days: https://www.coursera.org/learn/the-science-of-well-being There are programming courses from Stanford that are remarkably enjoyable there as well, along with art history and such. One of my favorite ID, Sheila Bridges, just posted on IG about the challenges of living alone during this time (can't post link from IG.) You are awesome. You have been through so much lately. The right guy and the right job will appear. Focus on healing and moving forward. The rest will come....See MoreDo you play the Ukulele? Christmas gift
Comments (27)Lascatz, this is what I wrote in the first post, " (ds) He said it's a great idea and DGD has mentioned before how she may be interested in playing a guitar." After I sent the two videos above to DS, his girlfriend told me today that he's started to get excited about DGD getting a Ukulele, and how he can learn to play also. Once she sees him play, and she watches Taylor's video, she'll love it. I think the whole household will want to learn. I was only jesting about "WTHeck is this?" only because the hormones are kicking in. lol When the boys were growing up I was forced to listen to Pearl Jam (Eddie Vedder), GunsNRoses, and I loved them, don't get me started about THE best guitarist, Slash. :) And Metallica. Eddie Vedder has an album with only the Ukulele and I sent a song to DS. haha It's a small school & it's not like she has a big social life. The word that kept standing out to me when describing a Ukulele is "happy." Yes! Yes! At the beginning of Taylor's video she says the same thing, and I told DS about it, it;s just a happy little instrument....See More- 10 years ago
