I've had my Jennair cooktop for 2 years now and nary a scratch. We slide pots on it all the time, many a boiled over mess too! I can say that I have never had to take a razor blade to it to get the stuff off either. That's why I'm leery of a Kenmore glass top for my new range. I'll be so sorry to let go of this Jennair cooktop - but my kitchen just can't support cooktop and wall oven as it's too small. :(

Our Regency F1100 stove (www.regency-fire.com) cost about $2200 complete with installation. My advice is to let a pro do the installation as the homeowner's insurance company prefers that. I have seen far too many house fires resulting from a DIY installation. Besides, the job can be completed from start to finish in under a couple hours when done by a pro. The size of the stove is omportant too. If you're just gonna heat the small area, go for a small stove. I have the smallest Regency and I use it to heat my 1300 sq ft home. I have it in the living room and it heats the parts of the house I wanna heat. But the bedrooms stay cool. Mt stove has heat shields so the clearances are much tighter to the drywall . It's in the corner of the room and the stove is 6 inches from the wall. It has a ceramic ("glass") door and I like to view the fire in the evening. As a matter of fact, the fire is more entertaining than most of what's on TV! So go to your stove shop, or a couple of stove shops, and tell them what you want to do. Have a stove sized to your needs and location. (It gets colder here in VT than it does in VA for instance.) Be prepared for the work involved in a wood appliance. (Buying, stacking, splitting, carrying in the wood, etc.) But the fact you can turn down that OPEC addiction is well worth it!

I haven't been on this site since my kitchen was finished last year, but this cloth finding was too good to keep to myself. I just had to share. My microfiber cloths came from the Wal-Mart automotive department. They are the only cloths I use for cleaning. The regular microfibers are great for windows, this one is better. I use the Weiman cleaner and conditioner about once a month or so. I use a dishrag for daily cooking splatter, but I dry it with the microfiber cloth for glass. I have the Maytag Gemini, with a double oven. The glass top nonskid surface literally feels like a rubber/plastic finish. Glass cleaner is NOT recommended. Anything else I have used, left streaks. I LOVE microfiber cloths. I HATE this stove top.

We have a plastic "collar" that goes on the top of the open pot. Keeps stuff from boiling over. DH does all the cooking, and he selected a glass top induction stove. Yes, we had to buy new pots and pans, but got them on sale. We love the induction stove, but it is very expensive. When we rebuild the house in four years, we are keeping it.
