Update: A Little On Topic and A Little Off Topic

This will be the first Thanksgiving in a long, long time that I don't have to fix anything. Our favorite niece told us the day was being hosted by her dad and his girlfriend at his house. I'm happy in a way because I'm really tired, but sad that I won't be fixing my favorite things for everyone else. My DH's condition is failing rapidly. On the 28th of October they diagnosed him with stage 4 lung cancer in both lungs in addition to the stage 4 skin cancer that had gone to the lining of his brain. I'm really finding it a problem to fix things he can eat. Most everything tastes like metal or its wrong texture. I've had the most luck with oven baked chicken breasts covered in simple Campbell's cream of mushroom soup. That's about the only successful solid dish. He will eat rice covered in the mushroom soup and some canned soups (Yuk!). He's requested pies twice, but couldn't eat more than a tiny little slice. He can eat cantaloupe a little bit every so often. At least the pulmonary cancer doctor told us that she thinks he'll make it through Christmas, but nothing is for sure. Pallative Care at the VA Hosp. assured us that when he goes into Hospice, it will be here at home and they will provide us with a hospital bed and anything else we need. Oh, the nurse there also said he needs to drink milk shakes. This to my DH who is not really into sweets and is lactose intolerant. He now weighs more than 30 lbs. less than I do. We have been preparing ourselves for this for a long time. Most of you already knew most of this, but I thought I'd give you an update.

I'm so to hear this. At least by not cooking, you'll have more time to spend with your DH. I'm sure he'd rather have you by his side than you running all over the place, although I do understand why you'll miss the cooking. Hugs and prayers.

Mulberry & Emma & Tiger, thanks for the responses! I didn't have a spot for my house plants outside for the last 2 years & we just moved to a new house with a lovely covered eastern front porch & a covered southern carport area. I'm excited to move them out. The years before we lived at our last house, I always put them out on our covered front porch & they always did really well. I just repotted my collection & they're enjoying some wind & sun (not direct sun!) underneath my carport. I'll be bringing them in tonight, & probably putting them back out again permanently on next Thursday after our (dare I say?) last cold snap. I'm attempting now to build my own moss-covered pole support for my monstera that has gotten very unruly in its growing (I had no idea that it needed support, my fault!) so that it will have something to climb on with its aerial roots this summer. I'm sure that they're all going to just explode with new growth once they get outside into the brighter light & warmth. I agree, Tiger, this spring has been very frustrating. Even for someone who only has planted flower seeds. I'm actually a smidgen relieved that I didn't go crazy with all the space in our new yard & plant a veggie garden. I'd be beside myself with stress & aggravation with this crazy weather. We were 85 degrees one day & 30 degrees the next night. :-/ One thing about Oklahoma weather, there is never a dull moment, is there? LOL.

My personal experience with things like directors chairs or camping cots that have solid fabric to support your body is that first they feel very comfortable but after about 20 minutes they start feeling harder and harder. Anything more than half an hour and I'm wanting to get off it. I've used non spreader bar hammocks for camping and for the garden I'm going with a spreader bar, I should have added that to the list. I like the more open feel and, again for me, it's easier to just casually lay down on one with a spreader bar than one without.

You certainly have enough on your hands without having to worry about cooking dishes for Thanksgiving. I am so sadden reading your updates and I am without comforting words for you. I think my DH is trying to prepare me...never mind.

My heart goes out to both of you. I hope you enjoy your holiday, even without your special foods. I also hope that this final year provides more love and laughter to sustain you for the coming months. Hospice is a blessing.

You can buy protein powders made from rice, pea or soy protein. Instead of dairy, I might add cashew or coconut milk for that creamy texture and calories.

Yes, I have been thinking of you B! Think of this Thanksgiving as a new experience. You can always make the favorite dishes another time. This time you get to focus on something different, on having others take care of you. We went to a friend's house last year and she didn't want us to bring or cook anything. It was a real pleasure just to relax and be pampered.

Oh, bcskye, you know that you and your husband have been in my thoughts and prayers and I agree with Lpink and Islay, focus on your DH and your time together and let other people take care of you for a change. I'm glad you have family to step in and do that, at least for the holiday.

I'm sending hugs and strong thoughts to you and your DH, hoping you and the docs can keep him comfortable, and special prayers for you as you take care of him.

I'm so sorry to here about the direction you're headed... it's not an easy path to follow. BTDT. Please remember to take care of yourself too.

One thing for your DH's soothies. My DH could only have liquids but had a dairy allergy. Grainlady suggested adding Great Lakes Gelatine - Collagen Hydolysate to his fruit or meat smoothies to add protein and needed amino acids... in the green colored can. I got it thru' Amazon from whichever vendor was cheapest because it's not inexpensive.... about $18 a big can... which lasts for awhile.
