A little off topic - mudroom cabinetry/storage

I decided not to have the cabinet maker make cabinets for the mudroom - too expensive. But now I'm not sure what to do. Pottery Barn has some lockers that could be fun. Or I could just have closets built. I need the storage to house sports equipment for three kids. Anyone have any suggestions or photos?

We just had a closet framed out and then DH made shelves and cubbies for our various ''stuff''. It doesn't hold all our gear by any stretch of the imagination, but works well for whatever we are using (mostly) for the current season.

I used some baskets that I had for hats, gloves and scarves, bought a boot tray, hung hooks and a rod, and my old wine rack even fit in there-and that was totally unplanned. No kids here but we used to have gear strewn everywhere. This corrals it a little.

Mine is more of a mud hallway that connects my garage to my kitchen. It's about 6 feet wide and I have shelves on one side, hooks on the other. I'll post the shelf wall below. The shelves on the left (actually you can't see them because they are above the bulletin board) are 10 inches deep and the shelves on the right are 16 inches deep. This hides the 6-inch bumpout of the refrigerator on the opposite side of the wall (hope that makes sense). The black cabinet is a shoe holder from Ikea and the colorful boxes are from Crate and Barrel. I already had the magnetic bulletin board and it fit perfectly.

That ATF recipe is generally known as "Ed's Red" Firearm Bore cleaner and rust penetrant. You just need to be careful using some of the suggested solvents. I'm going to try it without the acetone tho: CONTENTS: Ed's Red Bore Cleaner - 1 part Dexron ATF, GM Spec. D-20265 or later. - 1 part Kerosene - deodorized, K1 - 1 part Aliphatic Mineral Spirits - CAS #64741-49-9, or substitute "Stoddard Solvent", CAS #8052-41-3, or equivalent. - 1 part Acetone, CAS #67-64-1. - (Optional 1 lb. of Lanolin, Anhydrous, USP per gallon, or OK to substitute Lanolin, Modified, Topical Lubricant, from the drug store) MIXING INSTRUCTIONS: Mix outdoors, in good ventilation. Use a clean 1 gallon metal, chemical-resistant, heavy gage PET or PVC plastic container. NFPA approved plastic gasoline storage containers are OK. Do NOT use HDPE, which is permeable, because the acetone will slowly evaporate. Acetone in ER will attack HDPE over time, causing the container to collapse, making a heck of a mess! Add the ATF first. Use the empty container to measure the otherainer to measure the other components, so that it is thoroughly rinsed. If you incorporate the lanolin into the mixture, melt this carefully in a double boiler, taking precautions against fire. Pour the melted lanolin it into a larger container, rinsing the lanolin container with the bore cleaner mix, and stirring until it is all dissolved. I recommend diverting up to 4 ozs. per quart of the 50-50 ATF/kerosene mix to use as "ER-compatible" gun oil. This can be done without impairing the effectiveness of the remaining mix. They are 30'ish. If you haven't thought of it yet, you might consider heirlooms, or family hand me downs. I had a friend who at 50 had to drastically downsize and I helped her organize and sort though her enormous household of accumulated belongings. She wanted to toss or donate a whole ceder chest full of linens and a cigar box that had her grandfathers single edge shaver a pocket knife along with some other low priced mantiques that had been handed down and held onto. I told her no no no -don't toss, give them to the kids. She had a son and daughter in their mid twenties, and even though they were both renters, I suggested she offered them to her kids first. She didn't think they would want them, but I convinced her to at least ask them before chucking the lot. For the son, the simple gift felt like a coming of age moment, and the prefect time in his life to connect to his ancestors. The mantiques were small enough he could set them on his dresser, or tuck them in a drawer. I told her that every girl would like at least one nice table cloth and napkins, even if they're only used for a single Valentines day in her lifetime. She had a brunch and invited her daughter and her daughter's friends, where they sipped champagne and pawed through the doilies and table cloths and all the girls went home with something special, while the woman had a chance to tell the stories connected to the pieces. As far as a beginner household, a large matching set of tupperware replaces all those sour cream containers you can never find a lid to fit tightly on. A ladle, for some reason is the type of thing folks buy last like wise a whip. But a really good, heavy vegetable cutting knife always seems like an extravagance once you start shopping for them, so it's another purchase often put-off indefinitely (look for 3 rivet handle). And as simple as it seems, several matching dishtowels (4-6) washcloths (4-6) with matching pot holders make a kitchen look special, even if you are buying them at the dollar store. Have to admit, not the most exciting thread but it all counts! benje, I went back and forth with that idea. But was thinking about bringing in all the dirty laundry and dumping it on the long table where the washer and dryer are now. Sort it there and put it right into the wash machine below. The sink would move down eitherway as you show as that space would dub as the folding table. Thanks for the mark up and good suggestion on the laundry valet. I wonder if I'd need the rod above the sink if I had this. speek, There are cabinets above and below on the wall where the sink is. I thought about cabinets above the washer and dryer so that the detergent would be right there vs turning to get it from the other wall. However I was afraid I wouldn't have the proper clearance to dump all the dirty laundry for sorting on that table. Good suggestion on the door placement to open up that now usable space! David, That was been a really tough one...function vs. sight line. We felt the pantry was a bit small for our family so we add this additional storage. It was larger with two doors so we shortened to avoid the tunnel effect. I'm still struggling a bit with it.

Also are you ok with having to walk through your bathroom to get to your clothes? Personally and yes, it's a personal decision, I'd rather walk through a hallway with closets on both sides and then enter my bathroom. This way if someone is in the bathroom, I don't have to disturb him if I need an article of clothing. Originally this was reversed, and worked out better since the front window didn't waste any space except to act as a buffer between two vanities. I don't really mind whichever way it lays out, but my better half does. Personally, my sentiments have already been echoed by palimpsest... It's around a bed, not outside to an outhouse. I know that's snarky but really, have we gotten that lazy? Wear Depends to bed then and don't get up :) Someone in the middle of the night will have to constantly walk around the whole bed to get to the bathroom. That would be me. "I am not too keen on the options where the DW opens into the living room." I toyed with putting the DW on the other side of the sink, but then the open DW door will be in the middle of one of the busiest aisles in the home. At least when it's on the Living Room side there's no aisle limit. The DW is on the correct side, or at least it would feel more awkward to the left than right. Attached is probably the best arrangement we've come up with for the laundry/pantry/mudroom area. I'm a little worried that the entry from the mudroom to the kitchen isn't centered on an aisle. At the very least, it frames the window in the background. The pantry took up too much space behind the proposed cleanup area and moving it to the exterior wall gives the garage entry door something to land into. I wasn't able to grab as much real estate as Buehl was proposing, so hopefully the prep area works as shown. Also, we had to loose the bay window off the back of the house, so that eats up a bit of space for the dining room. One more really rough layout that's possible is:

It's not that exciting, but here is the hook wall on the opposite side. It's hard to tell, but half the hooks are about 3 feet from the floor and half are about 5 feet from the floor. My kids are supposed to put their backpacks on the floor there. Most shoes are stored on the shelf wall - there are a couple open shelves at the bottom for shoes.

I bought some lockers at IKEA. Each kid gets 1 set for shoes, bags (sports and backpacks) and various items that were always thrown all over.

I also have a set of hooks along the other wall.

Here in Michigan we sometimes need 3 seasons of coats/sweatshirts in one day, so we need lots of hooks!

We haven't lived with it yet, but this are our new cubbies that the trim carpenter built. It was much less than the cabinet guys quote for the same think. There will be three hooks inside each section and I have a basket for underneath for each person as well as a small basket for one of the smaller cubbies for winter gear, sunglasses and other things. The cabinet in he foreground is our mail drop area. I imagine the answering machine, notepads and junk drawers will reside here.

Here is our version of the mudroom. Eventually we'll have lockers/shelves/bench built, but this is working great for now. We used barnwood from my grandparents 100 year old barn, so it's sentimental and makes me smile.

My mudroom hasn't been fully planned out yet, but I'm very tempted to try something like these lockers out of Ikea BILLY bookcases. For more further storage, it's probably some high cabinets, also from Ikea. Can you tell I live ten minutes away from one?
