You probably have Brunnera macrophylla already. There are so many named varieties but I am guessing you would go for the straight species.

I am a fan of Gentiana. G. cruciata I have grown for years as well as G. septemfida var. lagodechiana. Both are undemanding and I need/want to grow others.

Myosotis is a given of course, how could we forget them.

p.s. The info for hardiness is all over the map on the Lindelofia l. so while intrigued I will hold off on that one.

ooh yes - gentians - like meconopsis, always terrified me and, to this day, I am still not 100% certain whether gentians are lime-haters or not. And yep, brunnera - one I have used in customers gardens (it's a winner, isn't it?) but never got around to myself (I did say I am a woodland novice with a lot of catching up to do). Another little plant (previous fail) popped into my head - the oddly named physochlaina orientalis - summer end is back to books time so I have been rootling through the seed catalogues, having worked through all my saved seed - now needing some new surprises - shallow, I know, but it keeps my enthusiasm going through the dark.

Myosotis, indeed - thinking of another fabled tricky type - the Chatham island forget-me-not - or myosotidium hortensia (nope, not a chance)...but I wasted no time in flicking a good many m.sylvaticum seeds around in my first year so little colonies of them to look forward to...and I had a mega bulb planting - all the little blues - scillas, chionodoxas, ipheons to add to the camassias - one of the best May bulbs in the wood last year.

In sun, blues never really look too great - apart from that single crepuscular hour when they go a bit electric, so this red and orange lover is energised by a whole new colour craze.

The only lime haters of the Gentians that I know of are G. pneumonanthe (which is reported to be finicky and short lived anyway) and G. sino-ornata and its hybrids.

Most are not fussy about pH. Apparently the diminutive G. verna is a lime lover.

I agree Brunnera really is a winner. Have you used named varieties in those gardens you have done for others and would you in your woodland?

One year I was a little over zealous pulling out M. sylvatica seedlings and the following spring was nearly grief stricken with the lack of sheets of blue throughout the garden lol! I do love blue!

Lobelia syphilitica would spread about happily.

While not a woodland plant Delphinium grandiflorum displays some of the bluest of blue blooms that I know. If you had a sunny spot.... (I won't even think about Meconopsis)
