Anyone know anything about Royal River Roses from Maine?
Comments (11)There really isn't much left on this side of the border. The Americans are all either major producers that don't sell much besides the latest and greatest, and boutique nurseries that have zero to none experience with life below zero. They sell rooted cuttings that will do fine if they are hardy varieties, but those are often few and far between, and their usual offerings are often very difficult to get up to size in this climate. You also can't necessarily trust their advice on what's hardy or what's best for their roses. So the standard source for roses is Pickering in Ontario. They ship from Buffalo, so there aren't any border issues. Palatine is a relatively new Ontario nursery that I've heard good things about. They do mostly modern roses, and I don't know if they charge for a phytosanitary certificate. Pickering doesn't. It's usually $25, which isn't bad for a large order, but a killer cost on a small one. Hortico is the other big Ontario nursery. I've never ordered from them, and they have a very uneven reputation. There are people who have been happy with them, and people who can't stand them. They used to primarily be a wholesale operation, and part of their problem was having absolutely no clue how to deal with customers. A lot of it depends specifically what you are looking for. Pickering is an acceptable replacement. Just don't make the mistake of thinking they are growing roses on the frozen tundra just because they are in Canada. They are on the lake shore, and warmer than most of us....See MoreJoss and Main

The prices end up being less than the "Professional Discount" from Lamps Plus. Again, it's certain items on sale for a short amount of time, while they last. I've had a few clients pick up various pieces from this site with a lot of luck. If you want an "invitation" to the site and a $10 coupon, let me know, I'll email it to you. (we both get $10 credit) Just email me at beekeeperswife at gmail dot com. As far as J&M, I've had wonderful success with their customer service. Bought a 6' tall palm tree for a show house. I was taller than it.....They thought a wrong one was sent, so they sent another one...again, I was taller than it. I ended up making both work (yes, they didn't want the first one back). I've bought other things from them too, all with good luck....See MoreWayfair / Joss & Main pricing! Help!

Comments (25)" I never even thought about the direction of any house I bought." Me, either. There is no perfect house, there's always something that's a compromise. In this house, I have an interior kitchen, how I wish I had a window -- I'd take any window, even a north one. But there are lots of windows in the house, including a great room that has banks of windows on three sides = abundant light. The property itself is terrific, and in the geographic location I wanted, so I bought the house. My last house had a south-facing entry and kitchen/eating area with two decent-sized windows, after many years there and trees filling in, guess what? Wasn't all that sunny in there -- bright, but not sunny. My southern view was of the driveway and cars driving down the street -- I'd take a northern or eastern exposure with a great view over that. That same house had the living and dining room facing north with huge window and patio door -- never was sunny in there, either, but it never felt dark or dreary in there, even in winter, because of the abundance of natural light and I maximized my view out those windows with the patios and landscaping, it was lovely to be in there and look out those windows. Those north-facing windows. What I'm trying to say is there are so many variables to take into consideration, not just the exposure....See MoreButternut
