Bath dampened exhaust vent on roof

I purchased this fan:
Delta exhaust fan at Lowes

but it says to install using an exhaust vent (gable or roof) with a damper on it. I don't have gables so must use roof penetration. Local roof supply and box stores only carry dampers for gable mount exhaust or nndapered t style jack.

Do I ignore directions or use gable style where damper may not work when mounted horizontally on a roof?

For a roof penetration, you want a proper roof cap. A wall outlet set on the roof will be tough to flash, and it won't handle the weather very well if at all.

Since you bought the fan at Lowes, you can order a dampered roof cap through them and have it delivered to the store or delivered to your door. Shipping is free on most of that stuff.

Thanks for the reply. Looking closely at the gable vent I would be foolish to put this up as the angle looks too exposed, possibly allowing water in, and there is no screen mesh from critters. The 4" just looks like trouble if installing on roof.

Yeah I can order them from Lowes or HD but the roofers are here tomorrow to put the shingles on, so I need something in stock. Nobody has them. That's what happens when you don't plan ahead enough. Guess a normal T roof jack it is. Supposedly I can put a butterfly damper inside the sheet metal riser up to the jack later, from within the attic.

Anyone know why it requests one? Don't all exhaust fans have their own damper anyway?

I would tend to agree with cobraguy about the fan running in reverse. If it's drawing in air and the vent cap is on the roof it's most likely getting the smell from the vent stack. I have a roof level deck on my house and can sometimes get the smell from one of my vent stacks. If you can access the fan in the attic, disconnect the hose and with the fan running check the air flow. It should be blowing out of the fan housing and into the attic. Most vent caps have flappers on them to prevent back flow so that might not be the issue.

Fortunately the fan is pretty close to the wall (8' run maximum?). Wall vent is possible although we are a little concerned what it would look like (unexpected to see a wall vent?) Wall is also a concern as the ceiling is cathedral and the steam, etc. is going to want to naturally travel up (away from vent). It would be alcove shower (3x6') with fan outside of the alcove (if ceiling mounted). Alcove does not abut outside wall. I'm not sure about ducting bending the 90 degrees as the duct would puncture the end of roof framing and the top of wall framing (the horizontal pieces). The exterior wall is shorter than average 77" and I am suspecting part of the reason a soffit vent may no longer be allowed for us is the space is very tight, if that makes sense. Duct looks to be around 4" diameter and wall top and end of roof frame is 2x4 (not 6", 40+ year old house). i agree side venting is preferable to going out the roof and having to deal with snow and ice.

Even if there is a window and you have a fan installed it has to go to the outside. M1501.1 Outdoor Discharge The air removed by every mechanical exhaust system shall be discharged to the outdoors in accordance with Section M1506.3. Air shall not be exhausted into an attic, soffit, ridge vent or crawl space.

IIRC, code requires a bathroom exhaust fan if there is no window. You could probably get by with only one fan, especially if you use Panasonic or similar products that have high air flow (110+ cfm). Do not use one of the cheap Broan or Nutone fans from the big box store, since they are noisy and the air flow sucks (usually 50-70 cfm).
