OT: Gastric Bypass for DD
Comments (1)Ilene, It is so nice to see you back posting and I am relieved that your DD is now feeling a little better. I hope that she heals well from the surgery and is able to lose the weight she needs to lose for the sake of her health. It certainly sounds like the surgery was very complicated for the medical staff and very hard on her, and I am shocked that the hospital didn't have a pain medicine pump that allowed her to push the button to give herself more pain medication as needed. That's what I had when I had my cancer surgery in 1999. It was a morphine drip, and I could push the button every so often to get more as needed. There was some sort of regulator on it so you couldn't push too often and cause yourself to overdose. I wish your daughter had been given that option because I liked being able to have "more" pain medication as needed, or "none" if I was feeling OK without it. To me, it seems like the nursing staff was very cold and callous and not very understanding, and I would have reported their lack of compassion to the hospital management. Perhaps your DD was a difficult patient, but they still ought to be able to deal with a difficult patient in a caring and concerned manner. I've always had great nurses--for myself and for family memners and I am sorry she did not experience that same kind of nursing care. As for the pharmacy, well....God bless the person behind the counter who cared enough to make a difference for you. I imagine your daughter was exhausted by the time y'all got home. I felt pretty exhausted on her behalf just reading your account of what y'all went through to get her there. I understand that bariatric surgery certainly is not an "easy way out" because the people I know who've had it have had to deal with many issues, including digestion problems, getting sick if they eat more than an ounce or two at a time, etc. Sometimes it is hard to get enough vitamins and minerals too because your food intake is so limited. My sister considered bariatric bypass but ultimately chose lap-band surgery because the lap-band could be adjusted as needed. Did it work for her? Oh, yes, she lost a lot of weight--111 lbs. I think--and she looked terrific (healthy, but not a starved, skinny "stick"). Her main side effect was that her formerly lush, thick hair started falling out due to lowered protein intake. After she had lost the weight she wanted, her hair gradually did regrow to its former lush, thick state. I'd like to tell you that my sis maintained the weight loss, but she didn't. She worked for the physician who did the lap-band surgery, so as long as she worked for him, she maintained her lap band (it has to be refilled with saline periodically and adjusted as needed) and kept her weight stable. Once she had a major disagreement with him and stopped working for him, though, she wouldn't go back to him for lap band maintenance and now she's gained back quite a lot (but not all) of the weight she lost. So, in one sense, I think bariatric surgery is "better" than lap band because you can't "undo" it and revert back to your bad habits. I truly hope your DD loses the weight and improves her health because, as you point out, the consequences for her are serious and life-threatening if she does not. As for your weight loss plan, I am so happy you are going to lose the weight and improve your health. I wish you well in your efforts. I am always trying to lose 10-20 lbs. myself and, sometimes, I have great success with losing the weight, but keeping it off is harder. : ) So, I certainly sympathize with you and DD. I think we all could eat healthier and exercise more than we do. And, Ilene, just think of how much fun you'll have buying new clothes as you lose the weight! How's that for motivation? Hang in there and keep us updated on how it all goes. We're all gardeners here, but we're people too and we all know that life is (shock! gasp!) about much more than gardening. Comments (9)Thanks for the suggestions and appreciated the input. Agreed that one should inform his family if it's emergency. Possibility he might be suffering from early stages of dementia and I have no idea if he is seeking medical profession for that. Why, he's got symptoms like short term memory loss (cannot remember recent events), anxiety, depression, changes in his behaviour and personality. He said he has been having a gradual short term memory loss over a number of years. I know of another elderly friend and this friend too is suffering from gradual short term memory loss and the effect is gradually debilitating. It's difficult to suggest to him to go check his short term memory loss out with a doctor, as he is not one that would take advise well. So all I can do is give him a phone number of helplines here and let him sort it out himself. I will add that he is finding it hard like confused and lost with even managing his own life. He also suffers from bowel issues and must go to the toilet straight away. It's not funny because wait till you and I reached an elderly age we too would suffer from incontinence and bowel problems, therefore have some compassion and empathy. Many years ago I know of a friend's Mum she suffered from dementia for many years and no one knew about it, not even my friend and my friend's Mum's relatives. It was only a year before she passed away something was done about it. My friend after living in another country for a decade, had to make decision to come back after making the decision to live in another country for good, then returned to sort the situation out. I can inform you that my friend's Mum's condition by the time it was sorted out it was very sad, because my friend's Mum did not seek medical profession to get assistance and help years before, therefore no one knew my friend's Mum was suffering from dementia to intervene earlier....See MoreIt's hard being an adult child
Comments (5)I have a nephew who is about 30 and in the same situation you're in. He's a bit worse off with his mental health issues though. His mom got him into volunteering at animal shelters. You'd be amazed at how much an animal can lift your spirits with just a wag of the tail or (in the case of cats) a rub of the head on your leg. Volunteering can lead to a job if you're not too bad off like my nephew. A word of advice, talk as little as possible when you're feeling yourself losing control. The less you say, the more normal you'll seem. Men can get away with being the "strong silent type" and no one gives it a second thought. Do what you have to do to get along at home too because you're better off there. He also does some therapeutic horseback riding. I don't know if you have access to anything like this but it might be worth looking into....See MoreA little less DRAMA please!!!!
Comments (31)Well, I went to talk with CPS yesterday morning. I still had DGS & the CPS worker told me that if DIL comes to get him, I should call her right away. My DD19 took the baby home while I was at work and DIL showed up at my work just before closing. I told her the baby is at home with DD and she said she is taking him. (DIL smelled of alcohol... like maybe hung over but hadn't bathed?) and when she came to the house, baby was asleep. She decided to leave the baby and said she'll pick him up when he wakes up. He was still there when I got home but then DIL came back and looked like she had showered. She said she would be back to get his playpen because she didn't have the screws to put his crib together yet. After she left, I talked to my son and he told me she took the baby to her mom's house for the night. (Just a week ago, she said her mom threw her out and wasn't talking to her.. so don't know if that's true) I have tried to talk to her mom & stepdad and they are not receptive to me. Her mom had one conversation while she was still pregnant where we agreed it would be a bad idea for her to move out of state, knowing my son is being deployed. Then, when it came time to move, they were supportive of her moving so I don't get where they are coming from. He also got paid today and it was direct deposited to DIL, not our joint account. (I guess he didn't do the change in time but his next check should go into out account) It makes me wonder if that is a reason her mom is talking to her again (for now) and helping with the baby? In the last week, DIL got her hair done (colored, cut & styled) the day after my son left. Then she got her lip pierced. She was seen driving with someone yesterday by my daughter... she thought it was a guy but DIL drove off too fast. She got her apartment on Saturday but didn't move her stuff in until Wednesday and here it is Friday and I don't know if she is staying there or what she is doing. CPS worker is going to her apartment this morning to talk to her. I guess it's all about waiting now... and worrying. My son is leaving over the weekend and I guess when she called him yesterday (Veterans Day) he was at Applebee's because service members got a free meal. She accused him of going there to flirt with the waitresses and forbid him from leaving a tip. He called me last night to ask me if he eats hard cooked eggs that have been out for two or three days will make him sick. I asked him why he'd want to and he's living in their house with everything moved out so he has no other food in the house. I told him to order a pizza and he didn't want to waste the money. I practically lost it and told him that he's about to leave to Afghanistan and he deserves to order and eat WHATEVER he wants for the next three days and not to worry about what SHE says about it... it's HIS money, HE is working for it and HE is putting his life in jeopardy for it. He ordered a pizza and used the joint account we set up... probably so DIL won't see it. She gave him hell once because he bought a coke out of the machine after he had been under the moving truck, hooking up the car trailer in the heat when he was moving her to Georgia. She is UNBELIEVABLE!!!...See More- 10 years ago
