Getting rid of ads and pop-ups

I had a program that did this and can't remember which one it was, now I'm going nuts with all this stuff.

What do you recommend for Windows 7, IE & FF?

I 've used Adblock Plus with Firefox. I don't use IE but I think it now works with IE, how well, I don't know.
I'm currently using uBlock Origin with Firefox, which works pretty well.

I'm assuming you've scanned for adware? Adblockers are really nice but you shouldn't use one to try to mask an infection.

Just in case you haven't ruled out adware, these tools might be useful: Malwarebytes Free and AdwCleaner

Tks, Richard. I scan almost daily with Malwarebytes AntiMalware and SuperAntiSpyware, no infections. I'll look into the two that you mentioned.

enmarene, I don't mind the sidebar ads, but pop ups and flashing ads are indeed, annoying. In fact, when a site uses that sort of advertisement, two things happen for me - I stop using that site, and I make note of who is advertising, so I don't buy their things. I find it very bothersome, and annoying. I appreciate very much that this is a free site for users, supported by advertising. Which is why we get to use Garden Web. But, there is a way to advertise that is not annoying and offensive to the site's users. I am very glad GW is monitoring their forum users' opinions, and have done away with those pop ups and flashing ads. Well done, GW. Patty S.

I am so used to IE. Any solutions for it? I know ads are needed and I don't mind them. And before pop-ups were small, but now I have this Sherwin-Williams every time, and it's huge :) First page ad always rolls out unexpectedly, so instead of clicking on Daylilies I usually go to other forums first :)) and then have to come back, wait for the ad to shrink, then go to Daylily, click on all Xs to close ads, after reading every post, after previewing answer, etc. Fun..

the very best way to get rid of all of them including the new inline ads GW warned about putting on recently is to use firefox browser with the adblock plus add on and the easylist subscription, it blocks them all, I see no ads anywhere. Firefox Adblock Plus 1.1.3 once you have that then go to the easylist page below, go to the 2 yellow lines for easylist and easyprivacy to the right where it says add to ABP click there and it will be added to your adblock plus and you will be all done EasyList and it is a very good idea to have at least 2 browsers on every pc in case something should happen to your IE browser.

Firefox firefox is a browser yes it is free you will use it instead of using Internet Explorer, simply install firefox and you can tell it to import all your bookmarks and settings from your Ie so it will all be there on the firefox also just like on your IE. then you will need to add the adblock plus add on Adblock Plus 1.1.1 click the add to firefox box once you have firefox installed then you will add the easylist filter EasyList Subscriptions you should add both of those to your adblock plus both easy list and easy list privacy.

This is waay overkill in my view. Prevention is much more effective than remediation. Install a capable and comprehensive antivirus and security system on your PC and these two software packages will be unnecessary.

Adblock plus is good at keeping page renderings lean, if that sort of thing bothers you. Otherwise, just as with a newspaper or magazine, it's not so hard to just ignore the ads.

Blocking popups is done via a browser setting and is a good idea. Also a good idea is to be careful where you go when browsing on the internet and never click on links or go to sites for which you can't be certain of their safety. By using good judgement in your behavior and choice of security software, danger will never be encountered.

I use Adblock Plus (there are a few that sound or look the same but aren't) and Ghostery and I stay pretty much ad free. There are times that, mostly Ghostery, causes problems with pages displaying properly (e.g., seeing reviews) but it's easy enough to temporarily shut off.

I would agree with Snidely, running malware scans daily is probably a waste of time. Good browsing habits should be developed as your first line of defense to malware.

Using noscript & ghostery add-ons in FF, for me, blocks most of the fluff (which mostly runs on javascripts) and speeds page loading considerably. With Seamonkey browser, ghostery isn't compatible but noscript alone does fine (so ghostery overall may not actually be necessary).
