Comments (28)red eared-You did the right thing w/the turtle! That blind turtle of my mom's is going to outlive her, that is too much of a commitment for me, without any payoff, as far as I am concerned! I would love to see pics of your house. Post them here if you want! hoosier-Thanks! I guess since this is going to be our home for a loooong time, I feel I want everything perfect. Also, this is the first(and maybe the last) house that is not only a home, but a way of expressing ourselves. I never used to be "into" interior decorating, landscaping, etc. I mean, I could appreciate a beautifully appointed room or a pretty plant, but now I am actually interested in learning more about them both. While I just said I feel more comfortable in a slighly messy (lived in) house, I also appreciate going to someone's house and seeing that a "mood" has been created and effort has been put into bringing it all together. I am worried about having my beautiful spanish dining set handed down from my parents, gorgeous art on the walls, well thought out window treatments and then have something simple and basic as baseboards detract. But yes, yes, I know...no one is noticing! Except maybe a Gardenwebber. Not sure I would let any of you in my home! Haha, I kid, I kid!...See MoreFireplace makeover ideas take 2
Comments (20)Thanks everyone - yes we are keeping the red it looks great with the new tile, and gives our living room some warmth and color! The contractors are coming back to do the kitchen backsplash next week (after counters go in tomorrow) so they need to touch up some of the wall patch, there are a couple spots that need attention before we do the touch up paint. Of course it will look much better with the paint repaired but I was too excited not to share. The hearth will be easier to keep clean and it's much safer than the raised heath. In fact the doors fit perfectly this way because they would have overlapped the top more if they could not extend down below where the hearth was before....See MoreDealing with baseboard heaters
Comments (40)Rudgekatherine, you've received some really good input here from people who have significant experience with interior spaces as either property owners or from personal study. If the options shared are missing the mark, I'd think about hiring an actual designer for a consultation. He/She can come to your home and assess the situation on site. It wouldn't be an entire interior redesign, so the cost shouldn't be prohibitive. I wouldn't be at all surprised if he/she offers solutions very similar to what has been presented here. The last option I have to share is to move the baseboard heater or replace it with a cadet wall type unit. Is it possible that another wall in the entry would be a better location for it? Naturally, moving and replacing will be a bit disruptive and perhaps an expense you're not willing to take on at this time. I can tell you know what you want and I know there is a solution that will satisfy you....See MoreOak Kitchen & Colored Crown on Cabinets
Comments (24)@crcollins1_gw Your kitchen is similar to mine only I'm taking my countertops even darker than what they are. Might be a dated look but I LOVE it plus, it hides so many stains lol. You are right, if you change to white counters, it will be a snowball effect. I started with a simple paint job and now my paint job has turned into a $30,000 reno/refresh. Does the light rail (lower piece of trim) hide under cabinet lighting? Can it be removed to accommodate your coffee pot? Or, is it time to shop for a new coffee pot that will fit? I am wanting to put black metal grilles in a couple of the upper cabinets - in the insert piece - with some glass behind. I'm struggling to find a supplier of the style I want. I think it will break up the Oak nicely. Maybe that's something you could consider with some of your uppers to draw in some white in to the cabinets?...See Moreourlifeinthesticks
