Adenium Towers - Interesting to see
Comments (19)I would like to try training a Baobab-shaped Adenium plant. I essentially need a fat trunk, spreading roots, and some short branches growing from only the top portion of the trunk....roughly 2/3 trunk (including the root flare) , and 1/3 branches. I understand the training concept of behind letting the root elongate. But wouldn't this training technique result in trunk having a reverse taper? How is the natural flare above the spreading roots achieved? topendadenium says: that they let the ..."root thicken" until it eventually reaches the diameter of the trunk. So the elongated tap root now becomes part of the trunk line, and blends into the fatter portion of the stem that originally grew above the original root line? OK.....so how are the flaring roots grown from what is essentially a very tall, Adenium that's shaped like a telephone-pole? At this point the plant is nothing but a tall trunk with a few branches growing from the top area. If the tap root is trained to become part of the trunk....when are these flaring roots developed? Is it possible that the trunk is chopped at the base line, and then re-rooted on top of a plastic disc, thus forcing the new roots into a horizontal pattern....much like they train the roots for Adenium bonsai? I'm lost. I need to have this explained to me. Interesting training technique, and an interesting way to present Adeniums. I like it. Comments (0)like this one: the problem w/ this one is that it is not deep enough. Sorry the pic doesn't show any doors or shelves, it is a customizable cabinet from room and board and when i added the doors onto it i couldn't save the pic. But basically i want it to have one glass door on each cubby and a wood or glass shelf for each cubby (so we could hold 4 components) we prefer solid wood but are open to veneer because we are desperate. thanks!...See MoreMy Twin Babies,Adenium Socotranum....Twin Tower and Stubby,3yrs old
Comments (207)Jericson, You have hundreds of photos in this post that it takes forever to download. And while it's downloading the texts/media are jumping around trying to settle in, I guess. Although I enjoy your pictures, I am afraid of crashing my computer (don't think it would). So would you kindly create a Part II or something to this post? I'm not asking only for my own convenience, maybe others are having the same issues? Again, I enjoy your pictures. But in the time it takes to download this post, I could have transplanted an adenium or two....See MoreTower adenium and other forms...
Comments (3)After revisiting and reviewing all the links, videos, older postings, and seeing all the possible ways Adeniums can be manipulated, bent, twisted, trained, grafted, braided, etc.....these are amazing plants in the hands of skilled growers. The woven, braided forms are not everyone's cup of tea, and I'll admit, the process can be a bit of a PITA to accomplish, especially knowing that the training of the plants is going to always be a work-in-progress. But who cares? That's what growing specialized plants takes. It takes hard work to make a nice plant. My goal, is to grow a braided tower with a fat trunk, and then, after some branch training, to graft all the top branches with a single, selected flower. All those stems that were braided together will produce different flowers, and I am not a fan of multi-colored flowers, multi-style, flowers on one plant. It looks too busy....and reminds me of those 5 in 1 fruit trees. Hopefully, in the coming years, the individual stems that were braided to form the tower's "trunk" will fatten up and possibly fuse together into one lumpy "trunk" supporting a nice rack of branches at the top end.....like a Baobab with flowers. If I had known about Adeniums 30 years ago....I would have tried some crazy training methods back then. Now, today, I'm happy just to see the plants alive and thriving. Long-term training experiments at my age are not too realistic, but I'm going try it anyway. The internet has opened to the world, all the many possibilities of growing Adeniums. Amazing! All you younger growers are very lucky. Losing plants...that , I can do, easily. I'm really good at that. Orchids, died. Bonsai, died or were stolen, gloxinia, died, fig trees died......the list is endless. My growing conditions are terrible for the plants I want to grow, especially for fat-plants that need sun and heat almost year round. NYC is a tough town, indeed.
