You know you're a compost junkie when . . .
Comments (142)Although you haven't gone fishing since your teenage years you suddenly become excited about it again when you realize that, while trout, bass, and other "good" fish have catch limits, you can catch all the squawfish and other invasive "bad" species you want, not only cleaning up your local streams and lakes, but also adding valuable micronutrients to your opus magnus....Oh yeah, and maybe you'll catch a trout or two for the dinner table, but that's secondary....See MoreYou Know You're Committed When...
Comments (4)Hello Newbie in NJ -- I've been using window blinds for years. I've found them on curbs and even had people donate them when they found out why I was keeping them out of landfills. I propagate so many plants that I use a lot of these. This will be my first year wintersowing, so I know I'll use up a lot of them. The best marker to use on the labels are these : http://www.gardeners.com/Marking-Pen/FlowerGardening_PlantMarkers,33-196,default,cp.html from Gardener's Supply. They last for - ev - er ! I've had mine for years ! Regular Permanent Markers are not permanent. At least not here -- maybe in Texas the summers are just too hot and the sun too much for them. However, pencils are the next best thing, since the lead never wears off. And if your plant doesn't make it, you can always erase the name and use it for something else. I prefer the marker, though, since it's easier to read from eye-level and I don't have to get down on my hands and knees to read the pencil. But to make my marker last longer, I might use pencil for those labels in plants that I give away. Just a few hints for you with your new-found discovery ! patty...See MoreYou Know You're Hostaholic When?
Comments (20)1. I have no more space in the shade, yet order 15 more hostas. 2. Even other gardeners' eyes glaze over when I start going on about hostas or bring out the hosta photos. 3. I think most people's hostas are boring because they're the "green ones with the white edges." 4. I'm tempted to call the ASPCH (American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Hostas) when I see hostas limp on the ground in other people's yards in need of water. Comments (18)This is a great thread. We're not remodeling but building a new house, and man, can I relate to a lot of these. ...you know every lighting fixture, faucet, sink, appliance by memory because you have endlessly researched each one. you freak out your own GC because you can discuss minute details about your house/kitchen from memory down to the 1/8". you have more e-mails from your GC/subs than you do from your friends. you wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat about some critical detail and then go downstairs to e-mail your GC about it right at the moment before you forget....See Moremiami mami
