As your walls are white, I'd go with white doors. I wouldn't want my interior doors to be prominent features of my home that "jump out" at me, but understand that the modern/contemporary aesthetic lends itself to different choices than what I'm used to so perhaps others will think differently.

We are also building a contemporary home and debated the same thing. Ultimately we decided to go with white doors because we have a hallway with lots of doors off of it and I didn't want to suck the light out of the hallway or have it seem busy. But if you don't have any issues like that, it's a great look!

I think white would look best - black would call more attention to them since you have so much white already. Personally, I'd rather have the eye go elsewhere.

I would have to see the plan. In general i would recommend black doors for the scheme you describe, but it all depends on the layout, number and placement of doors, available light sources, etc..

If you are contemplating the use of grays in marble and other accoutrements, would you consider using a dark charcoal instead of stark black?

I have a friend who painted the doors in her house. She said the trick is not go black-black but rather use a very dark charcoal gray. My friend's decorator took a Johnston Murphy shoe box to Sherwin Williams and had them color match the box (not the lid which is gray).

if you want the doors to be a design statement do black. If you want them to blend do white.

You could do all white doors with the powder room door black to make it easier to find, if that is even an issue. "Where's your bathroom?" "Down the hall with the black door."

I love the black doors! During the Victorian era 'woodwork' was painted black since fireplaces heated homes and the soot blackened everything~znother reason for dark painted walls as well as clothing.

If my house wasn't so new, I would paint the doors~have actually considered it!

I painted the exterior as well as the interior of the front door when I was living in my condo. I think it adds a very sophisticated look to an otherwise ordinary home.

I have a friend with a house that was decorated by the AD100 designer Jan Showers (so it's not contemporary but not really traditional either). Anyway, all of the doors in her house were painted this really stunning kind of smoky quartz color. Hard to describe and sounds weird, but it was like a shade of brown that wasn't trying to look like wood. The color palette in her house was a lot of pastels, but the doors looked amazing!

I would think black is too harsh, but I think painting them all a color other than white is a great idea. Have you considered doing a dark grey instead of black for the windows as well? Sherwin Williams has this color called Black Fox that is extremely popular with designers. It's a softer blackish color.

I have even considered painting them in my house purely because doors get so easily banged up and dingy looking. Only reason I haven't is cost. I do think if you're going to do it, though, the key is to do it throughout the house.

My doors are a color traditionally called Charleston Green.....six parts black to one part green. Our walls are green and other colors. It took two weeks for the guy to degloss/ sand, prime, and do three coats. They look mahvelous if i do say so myself :-)

My home has black base boards, black crown moulding, and black doors. I love it!!! It gives my space so much character and it looks different. I would recommend black doors and base board! Below is a picture of my living room/dining room.

It is EXTREMELY irritating to be given links that one has to be a member of to see. Why bother. Black would be the more extreme choice. What is the traditional never a fad color of one is going to paint wood. Painting wood commits you to up keep. How much time do you have for re-painting every few years?

Arcy, in 2003 our twelve inches of crown molding were sanded down and painted with a primer and three coats of oil based gloss paint, sanding lightly between coats. We did not own the house at the time but know the painter who did the work. It looks perfect. From my perspective, your estimate of the maintenance involved for painted wood is rather overstated.

For a modern space, I'd go with white. Bring in the color and interest through art. However, if you're really wanting something dark, I'd skip the paint and consider a slab door with a stainable veneer. It will be a much more subtle look.
