While photographing a cemetery yesterday, I came upon this unexpected sight. It was sad . . . the deer had a badly broken leg and appeared to have internal damage, undoubtedly hit by a car. But somehow she made it into the cemetery, where she died.

If I hadn't found the deer, which hadn't been dead long, I don't know when it would have been found. The cemetery is old, and I don't imagine it attracts many visitors. A stone wall surrounds it, so the deer wasn't visible from the road.

Alisande, it's an odd picture to me. Something dead in the cemetery, such a lovely animal. A lonely looking, peaceful spot, graves so worn and old. Poor animal, it may have suffered a bit. (Do you report it or let nature take its course?)

I reported the deer immediately. (I have the State Police number memorized from when I worked as a reporter.) Given the sudden impulse that brought me to that cemetery (which I saw only once in passing, four years ago), I have the feeling I was meant to find the deer. It surprises me that she managed to get to that peaceful place. I don't think she could have cleared the stone wall with her injuries, so she must have walked through the one break in it.

Poor deer. It always breaks my heart to see injured and dead deer. I know they are destructive, but they are also such beautiful and graceful animals.

Very nice pictures everybody. I am not quite ready to go to the cold side, so I am putting up a picture of the million bells I had on the porch this year.

After a trip to Brady's Bend ( pics in yesterday's show me thread) we go to Moraine to check out the color on Lake Arthur. It was a dull day, but the color along the shore was awesome.
