Layout second guessing in the final hour, advice?
Comments (33)Kellienoelle- It looks like stainless steel to me and I like the little shelves, too. Are you using stainless steel, for your other appliances (I thought you were, when I posted this) and what about the open shelves, on the back wall? Wood, stainless steel, something else? As for the backsplash, I would find something that works with your cherry and stainless steel...and just run the backsplash the same height...all the way around the room. Maybe up to the bottom of the first open shelf, up to the vent/hood, even on the other side of the doorway...maybe something like this? Basic white tile, with a design focal point...but all white above? From Kitchen plans Or you could do something a little shinier and more contemporary...I really like this one. From Kitchen plans Or you could go more rustic... From Kitchen plans That's about all I have on file. Does it give you any ideas? :)...See MoreRevised kitchen layout drawings are here! Comments (11)Why doesn't she 'balance' the cabinets on either side of the stove, so they're the same size? Isn't that part of design? Where does the wall end to the left of the stove? Does it go all the way to the back side of the sink run? If so, I think I'd add cabinets there to balance the entire wall. But I don't see a reason to have the cabinets flanking the hood and stove to be different sizes. I agree that the hutch design isn't good. I wouldn't do the thin cabinets on either side of center on the top or the bottom. Was this design your instruction to her? I think the problem with the fridge wall is the drop of the upper over the cabinet. I don't think it's necessary, and all should be level, and the doors designed to look nice together. I agree that 36" would be narrow for baking, but for using the mixer in order to use the island across as main baking workspace, it serves an important purpose. There is no reason those cabinets facing the stove can't be 24" deep so that your sink is in the right spot. Your work triangle would be GREAT if the sink was put where you asked. Maybe the other cabinet sizes need to be adjusted. She has now insisted on charging you by the hour, instead of the original agreed fee, right? And has given you plans that need revision and more time... You've reported that she has given you argument and attitude previously, and I think she still might be......See MoreFinally! Ready to beg for your esteemed advice on my kitchen layout.
Comments (14)A few thoughts: - A 13" drawer stack is not very useful. I would much prefer the cookie sheet/utensil pullout you have in mind. I have a U-shaped kitchen, and looked at every corner contraption I could find, to maximize use of those spaces (my kitchen isn't very large). I had two pie-cut lazy susans - the kind where the door is attached to the turntables, and the whole thing rotates together. I hated those things with a passion - not sturdy enough for heavy things (like a crockpot); not convenient for light things (like Tupperware). In my new kitchen, I have a super susan, on a diagonal, so the turntables are full circles. I have a drawer above (again, small kitchen - I needed to maximize drawer space). Some folks don't like diagonal cabinets, but it works for me. I have a small MW in the same corner - the angled cabinet provides more counter space in front of the MW. My cabinets were custom built, so I had the cabinet maker space the shelves in the SS to my specifications - ensuring that I had enough height for the small appliances I put there (rice cooker, crock pot, blender, etc). The other corner was a challenge. It's between the sink and range, and there isn't a ton of space. Since this is my primary prep space, I wanted a lot of things to be located in that space: pots and pans, cooking utensils, canisters of sugar/flour/rice/pasta. Another Susan - or other contraption to access the corner space - would limit what I could store there, and I already had plenty of storage space in other parts of the kitchen for storing large, seldom-used items. I ended up closing off the corner completely, and putting drawer stack on each side. It has been the perfect solution for us! Anything else would have reduced my kitchen to 1 drawer stack - now I have 3 (and if you've spent any time here at all, you know how important drawers are). The corner solutions that will work best for you depend on what you will be doing in those corners. I inventoried essentially everything in the old kitchen, and assigned it a place in the new kitchen. Great consideration was given to "point of use" - potholders and cooking utensils near the stove, dishes near the DW, etc. Once I knew what was needed where, it became much easier to plan the cabinets to accomodate those needs. Good luck!...See Morekitchen layout advice - all opinions welcome
Comments (16)Dining table is not yet purchased. But we have 12 chairs. Peninsula as island creates some difficulties with the existing cabinetry. We have a lazy Susan without anything to really replace that with on both walls. Living room - not sure. But switching the lazy Susan to that end also creates complications. Since these are secondhand and we are trying limit additional purchases it does create a puzzle and some challenges. However because it’s a small living room off the dining room in one space it’s almost like a big dining room with seating in the back. Sort of like the open space and symmetry of the doorways on each side of range. Pantry door - i suppose can be in hallway but seems to waste space where we were thinking about keeping our old fridge. Also it’s a bearing wall so more complex there as well. Ideally we’d get a pantry door to match other cabinets next to it that opens to the pantry but likely out of reach budget wise....See Moresheloveslayouts
