Have you been to your local nursery lately?
Comments (20)Come on by, Mandib! We've been getting lots of deliveries. Ten trucks or more a week (and man I feel it ~ I have to help unload every single one ;). Many of them are vegetable plants (got 350 flats of tomatoes and peppers alone last week) and perennials, but also many shrubs and trees. "Vegetable plants at the NG seemed to go quickly this year but perhaps that's because I'm fairly new to veggie gardening and don't know any better." Nope, Redthistle, they really are going quickly. It's amazing ~ half of those tomatoes and peppers I mentioned above were gone by Friday at closing (only a day or two!), along with fully 1/3 of the fifty or so flats of strawberries. If you want to get in on the best selection, sign up for the newsletter next time you're in the store (look for the stand with the clipboard to the left of the bathrooms) and be sure to come in on a Friday morning. Most deliveries are on Wednesdays and Thursdays, so best selection is on Friday morning. The newsletter goes out on Thursdays and lists what we got that week. If it's hard for you to get in on Friday mornings, it's best to call before you come just to make sure what you want is still there. And here's a tip on picking good tomato and pepper plants ~ look for the seed leaves. If they're still there and nicely green, that's a sign that the plant has been treated very well. Those seed leaves are very susceptible to mistreatment, yellowing or browning at almost the slightest thing, so if they're there you can rest assured that the plant wasn't severely overwatered, underwatered, overfed, etc. Of course if the tomato plant was buried extra-deep when it was transplanted, the seed leaves will be buried and you won't be able to tell, but it holds true on most plants. An ugly hole ~ PERFECT description of it, Lou_Midlothian. Ha! "...but unfortunately, they have been there too long last time I saw them." How can you tell, Lou? I'm not doubting you ~ I'm trying to pick up tips anywhere I can get them. And which growers use those pots? I'd love to know so I might could bring it up to the people who do the ordering. They probably have reasons for not ordering from them (they like to order from smaller, local growers, so maybe that's it), but then again it might be that they just don't know about them. Good job on planting and caring for those trees, too, Lou. They look GREAT! It looks like you avoided another common mistake ~ burying the root flare. Did you prune off the lower branches, too? I like doing that as it really does make those trees jump up out of the ground, doesn't it?...See MoreWhat have you been *Late to the party* for?
Comments (55)Used to be an early adopter on most things, including tech and fashion (lived in NYC as a single person), but have turned into a luddite slug wrt anything but a few areas. pesky, you're behind the times with a big-screen that doesn't hang on the wall? LOL we still have our 1993 27" Toshiba CRT tv as our only one! We periodically shop for a larger new tv but we just can't seem to get rid of this one since it still works. Would be a shame to waste it. We figure when it dies, we'll get whatever is best (within our price range) then, as we did back in 1993. Don't think the new item will last as long, though :( -- that's what ticks us off about buying new technology these days. Funny thing: I got a DroidX the day it came out (replacing years of free craigslist phones). I was looking at it one day recently at the gas station, trying to navigate my little corner of it, and the gas station attendant came up excitedly -- he'd just gotten a DroidX the day before and had it *completely* customized -- he'd downloaded wallpaper, put tons of music on it, had each home page completely arranged and connected the way he wanted it...his excitement at encountering a fellow Droid owner turned to disgust when he saw that I use *one* home page and only the very basics there......See MoreWhat Have You Been Doing Lately?
Comments (30)I have been enjoying my eldest son's last summer before going to college. He usually travels a great deal on his own during the school breaks for various competitions and projects, but this year, we are spending most of the summer together. Last night I started looking for what to buy for his dorm room. He being who he is has practically no interest in the subject. And his school provides very little guidance- plus his school does not let students know who their roommates will be until the first day of orientation, so you can't coordinate who will brink the fridge and who will bring a microwave. Seniorgal, with respect to the situation with the remodeling of your senior living campus, I am incredibly upset by the callous disregard with which your concerns have been met. The last thing anyone wants as she ages is for her environment to be an impediment to getting exercise and socializing. So here is an idea, it is obviously worth exactly what you paid for it, but I just wanted to suggest you keep a written record of the conversations you have had with management about the new hazards they have installed. A paper trail lets people know you are serious about a problem and when something bad happens, as it surely will, not to you, but anyone else, you have documentation to back up your claims (of negligence, my word, not yours.) It would be good if you could email a brief summary of your conversation to the person you spoke with, his/her supervisor and an outside party, one of your children is a fine choice. For example: Hello Joe, I appreciated the opportunity of speaking with you about the slipperiness of the new flooring in the dining area. As I mentioned, this flooring has caused me to lose my balance and so I no longer can use this part of our lovely facility. I hope you can find a way to resolve this issue, because I am distraught at no longer being able to get out as much as I would like as a result. And I am quite concerned that this flooring will cause someone to slip and fall and hurt himself. As you know, falling is a serious danger to senior citizens. One of the reasons many of us chose to leave our homes and live in a facility better suited to our needs. I have attached a link to the Wiki page on Universal Design for your perusal https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_design . "Universal design (close relation to inclusive design) refers to broad-spectrum ideas meant to produce buildings, products and environments that are inherently accessible to older people, people without disabilities, and people with disabilities." Best regards, Seniorgal Make sure you get every issue covered this way. ETA for clarity....See MoreWhat Have You All Been Doing Lately?
Comments (20)Working a lot right now. We have a new exchange student. His host parents moved on him and so I agreed to take him in for the rest of the year. He's from Taiwan. Getting ready to take vacation in 2 1/2 weeks so all my days are crammed together, with only one day off in between a bunch in a row. Just before vacation I work 8 in a row. Lauren and I are going to Vegas to see George Strait in concert at the beginning of February. Then I thought I'd go up north to see my dad. He's 88 and just had a pacemaker placed after complaining of chest pain in the night to his doc. He's still in the hospital in Reno waiting for a rehab bed. He's actually doing really good, eating 3 meals a day in the hospital. He doesn't eat at home and had lost a lot of weight....See More- 11 years agolast modified: 11 years ago
