Garden Update: whatcha doin'?
Comments (35)Hmmmm, what am I doing attempting to do right now. Well, don't think I'm nuts but... I'm digging out about two feet of soil from a planter which is cut into a slope. This will be replaced with Sunshine mix No.4 and some compost. Over the years this has been my tomato bed (5 plants) this is the hottest spot in my yard so the tomatoes have the best chance here. Last year the tomatoes didn't grow that well so this year they went into a new raised bed out in the open. We had the most fantastic summer for tomatoes, they grew gangbusters but most years we need to plant them in the warmest spot in the garden (the tomato bed). Each year I have moved the soil back to front in the bed amended it with compost and steer manure but there comes a time when it needs overhauling. This bed has a fiberglas roof high enough that on the backside I hang netting for beans. When you don't have room to grow everything you want you have to get inventive. The old soil is being tossed on a bed where I pulled out the couch grass, it is also being amended with manure, wood ashes and compost, then tilled. I've planted my garlic in the front and I'll plant veggies in the rest of it next spring, hopefully the couch grass is history. The tomatoes will go back in their usual spot next year so when it stops raining I'll be out there moving more soil. Comments (23)Ann T, Cooper is loving having me home more than anyone else, I think, although Makayla and Bud are having a ball playing with me. Elery, well, I'm not so sure, LOL. dcarch, I can't get actually livestock other than the cattle and horses, which can get a week's worth of food and water at a time, until I move out there. We'll get feeder pigs from one of the 4H kids in the spring and slaughter them in the fall, but breeding stock will have to wait until I'm actually living there. I'm kind of leaning toward Mulefoot hogs, as they pasture well, we'll see. I sure want to make some more homemade bacon, though. The Poulet de Bresse rarely makes it out of France, but there is a Canadian variety of the Bresse called Blue Foot. It was nearly eradicated during the Avian flu scare but I understnad remaining stock is in California, so maybe, someday. The flavor is supposed to be far superior to other varieties. Having never eaten it, I can't remark on that. The girls do want to get some laying hens though, all different varieties, LOL. As long as I get good fresh eggs, I guess I don't care, I'd get half a dozen different heirloom varieties but they have to be sturdy enough to withstand Michigan winters without frostbite to their combs, etc. So, big gardens, fresh eggs, farm raised pork, oh yeah, I'm looking forward to eating well. Comments (9)It has been a heckuva week, cannot wait till next week. My boss gets married Saturday so we are heading to DC on Friday and we were busy today. Had a manicure at 8, got home and hit the ground running. My travel work was crazy and so was my 'real' job! LOL!! Last minute work getting the band (they are from L.A.) set up, finalizing the rehearsal and out of town guest party for Friday night, the Sunday brunch......and trying to get the actual work for the office done..... Comments (14)I'm waiting for things to dry up a bit more, then maybe I can think about starting on my yard. I leave a little "trash" over my flower beds, helps keep the critters from making a toilet out of them over the winter. Made a quick check this weekend of calving supplies, every thing looks good there, at least until we start calving and then you really find out what kind of shape you are in. This weekend, we had family over for Chinese food dinner and watched the Flames kick the $h???p out of the Maple Leafs, watched the Flames again last night play a hard fought game against Colorado, and the Womens World Curling Championships from Japan.
