Moving Statues Kiss and Cross Paths Every Day to Tell aTragic But Stunning Visual Love Story

This 26-foot-tall steel sculpture by Georgian artist Tamara
Kvesitadze is a stunning example of mechanics and design, as well as a
depiction of eternal love between nations. These moving statues that make up
the structure, are said to symbolize the story of two lovers from different
religious backgrounds. Located in the seaside city of Batumi, Georgia, the two
figures represent a Muslim boy, Ali, and a Georgian princess, Nino, from a
famous 1937 novel by Azerbaijani author Kurban Said. The tragic story ends with
the lovers separated by the invasion of Soviet Russia.

Every night at 7 p.m., the two figures begin changing positions, moving towards one another until they meet in a brief embrace, before passing through and continuing on their path. At night their dance is
lit up with colorful, undulating lights that create an emotional atmosphere as
well as a striking sight on the seaside boulevard.

Originally designed in 2007 with the name A Women and Man,
the sculpture was installed in 2010 and subsequently renamed Ali and Nino.
Theirs is a story of passionate love torn apart by culture, religion, and war,
and has been hailed as one of the most romantic novels of all time.
