My Roses in Burning Heat...... Zone 9b
Comments (143)Straw wrote: "Khalid: Your roses look very good in high heat, nice colors and healthy foliage. My Just Joey looks really bad, blooms bleached out to beige, so I don't even post pics. I might move it to partial shade for better color. We are in hot & dry phase, up to 90 F, or 32 C." Straw: 90*F is not high heat for roses in my view. I mean in this temperature, my roses were performing very well. Could there be other (primary) reason for your Just Joey or any other rose not performing that well. I am not sure if 90*F alone is enough to cause deterioration in performance of a particular cultivar. I mean some mineral deficiency / excess or some issue with the soil that gets amplified due to rise in temp? Or could it be that my roses have slowly been acclimatized to perform better in heat? Just trying to understand what could be the reason for my Just Joey being quite yellow in 105*F and your's turning beige in 90*F. best regards PS: Sam, did you see the photos of Rose Biomes posted above? Jess: Alec's Red hasn't impressed me much. It is almost completely non fragrant since the temps rose above 100*F and is blooming sparsely. When I compare it's performance with many other roses, I would rate it quite low with regards to performance in summers though it performs much better when it is cooler. Sorry no experience of growing Christopher Columbus. I haven't actually seen it here....See MoreBest time to graft roses in N-Cali zone 9b
Comments (35)Help Me Find lists three offspring of Louis Philippe. One is a mutation; one is from its seed and one from its pollen. Archduke Charles is a mutation of Old Blush and has produced only mutations. That doesn't necessarily mean anything other than no one has reported raising any seedlings from it, but seedlings have been raised from Old Blush. Mel's Heritage may be fertile, or not. There are no listed crosses involving it, either direction. Again, though, that only means no one has reported raising any crosses from it. Of the three, I would think Mel's Heritage would be the most interesting to try, because of its parentage and the fact no one has reported any results from it. Unless you're going to try something really far out, like species crossed with Archduke Charles or Louis Philippe, you are likely to raise "more of the same" from them....See MorePruning and Fresh Growth - Zone 9b
Comments (50)Lavenderlade: Though HMF mentions William Morris as "Strong" fragrance, I have mostly found it of moderate intensity in Islamabad. The quality of fragrance is great and it smells like a mix of fruits, old rose and spices. Very nice fragrance. Few more photos.... The bush was suffering from powdery mildew in the last week but seems to have recovered very well after milk spray. Lovely damask fragrance One of my GC bushes that is in a pot. Lot of buds coming up Just Joey is simply marvelous this year. I bought this Lady Emma bush in April 2015 and it has hardly grown in two years. I have changed the soil this year. Let's see how she does!! This own root Westerland seems to be doing great this year. It's a home grown cutting. As before, William Morris is one of the performers in my house...See MorePlant ID: celery-like leaves (zone 9b - SW Houston)
Comments (27)Texas, Jay; and it was nandina domestica...a whole bunch of them! :) With my luck, any 'retribution' would likely backfire. Actually this is the exact same area where the (same) neighbor's Passiflora incarnata 'Incense' is poking through -- and I think I want those. (Famous last words...check back with me next August: you all may need to talk me off the ledge!) So, actually, as I go through and pull up what I think are artemisia roots, I may inadvertently damage the passionflower. (Haha...have thought not enough out!) This is a full-afternoon-sun part of the yard, and I've already noticed the syriaca doesn't appreciate our heat. Remember, the seeds sprouted very easily; but as soon as the seedlings reached ~ 4-5" in height, they just shriveled and died. I did set the pots (and yogurt cups) aside, in case they come back this spring....See MoreMary
