Belle Portugaise - How large does this grow?
Comments (15)Susan Louise is much cleaner than Belle Port, Rosefolly, not to worry. It doesn't even get PM in Mildew Valley. I seriously doubt the reported parentage that SL is a sport of Belle Port. Yes, they are similar but far from identical. Belle Port is enormous, while Susan Louise is only 12 feet tall. The bloom is not identical, with SL having fewer petals. Belle Port is a true climber, blooming on laterals. SL is a huge, Paul Bunyan Tea, with typical Tea growth tho rather bare at the base, tree-like. It really resents pruning and will skip the spring flush if you prune it. Don't bother and keep all the ratty twiggy stuff around the base or it will go bare by year 4....See MoreMy Belle Portugaise is blooming!
Comments (6)Thanks for all of the input - who knew that "once bloomers" is a flexible term, depending on the weather conditions?! It is certainly true that we have had the coolest summer here since they started keeping records in 1947 - the paper this morning said the avg summer temp in the town I live in was 64 degrees! That is unheard of. Sadly, this is not a condition I am going to be able to reproduce in the future - our normal summer heat causes many of even my repeat bloomers to go dormant, although they usually wake up and start blooming again in Nov/Dec. Meanwhile, I am admiring the Belle Portugaise blooms every day - they are one of my favorite rose blooms - they are so elegant, and they practically glow with a translucent peachy pink color. Comments (19)It got as tall as it is now before it ever bloomed. I think it had decided it needed to grow to its natural height before it would spend any energy on blooming! Now it is about 12 years old, and is not getting any taller, although we do prune it a bit after its Spring bloom, as it is drooping over our driveway. Comments (11)MANY plants are confused and flowering out of season. Kippy just posted to the Rare Fruit pages on Face Book about one of her apricot trees flowering now. Others have followed with their posts about their fruit trees flowering now, also. My Fortuniana has flowered almost consistently since summer 2015, with just a few week's rest. It's back at it. Banksiae lutescens has scattered bloom several times this summer. All four Minutifolia types have scattered bloom all year. Primula, Xanthina and several of my Hugonis hybrids have, also. IXL and Dr. Huey, both virus indexed plants, have also scattered flowers this summer after stopping as they normally do. Spineless Roxburghii just threw a flower week before last. Basye's Amphidiploid 86-3, the Banksiae X Laevigata hybrid, has also thrown flowers off and on this summer. Basye's Legacy, traditionally spring into summer flowering, is finishing its third flush for this year. The Banksiaes and Fortunianas CalTrans planted out on the freeway embankments have also continued flowering all summer. Part of it is the usual climate confusion of their "thinking" it's still "spring". Part is the changing weather. We haven't received any rain here, yet....See Morenikthegreek
