Help!! Kitchen(Cave) Remodel/Update on a BUDGET
Comments (16)I think the light fixture's yellow glass shade is probably contributing to the problem, so I would take it off and get a better read on the cabinets and countertops. The next thing I would do is remove the wall paper. Where the wallpaper is in front of the window to the left of the sink, what is that, some kind of valance? Can it be removed, it is blocking sunlight. Then remove the cabinet handles and give them a good cleaning with a degreasing product. In our last house they cleaned up and got about three shades lighter. You will need to thoroughly clean before painting anyway so this will not be wasted work. I have even had to scrap layers of built up grease off with a razor blade- ick. I kind of like the green color of the Iaminate. The full splash makes it a bit intense but it is probably just a thin sheet of the laminate glued to the wall and may come down very easily. It could also be covered it like nosoccermom suggested. Two full height stainless backsplash panels can be gotten pretty cheap at HD or Lowes. I don't know your storage needs, but you could remove all the uppers on the sink wall and the backsplash, You could do a small splash behind the sink to protect from water, it could be stainless, or tile, and then do open shelves on that wall. If you do decide to paint the cabinets, think a soft grey-green would look nice. If you can remove the backsplash, I think I might go with a chocolate brown on the lowers and a light off white on the top....See MoreOur Thanksgiving week total kitchen remodel
Comments (124)Okay, we're back on track! We had a good workday on Saturday, and knocked off a few lingering projects. First, we put in the desk area stuff. We took your earlier advice and pulled the upper cabinet away from the back wall by 6", but that added a lot of complexity in fastening it, as it had to be screwed to the side walls. We had to build up about 1.5" on either side, so we did it with plywood and some shaved-down pieces of a pallet. It looked like this: We got the wall cabinet screwed in, and the desk placed (at counter height), but not fastened yet, because I can't remember how far from the back wall I told the granite guy to go with the counter. So we'll wait to do the final front-to-back positioning until he brings the slabs back. I still need to add the fillers and the crown to the wall cabinet, but I'm using the filler around the tambour, and need to use it there first, and use the remnants on the desk. DH worked for 4 hours on the island electrical. We mused, discussed, and brainstormed to figure out what to do on this. We've got decorative panels everywhere, so an outlet in the middle would detract from that. Plug mold (our original idea) would have required one side of the island counter to be a couple inches more overhand, plus it would cover up the top of the decorative doors. So our KD (thanks, Dan!) had this idea: It's unobtrusive and simple in concept, but to execute my DH not only had to drill the holes in the precise place in the 3/8" plywood skin, but then chisel out a rectangular area behind it, so the outlet could be flush with the outside of the plywood. Whew! We've got one on either side of the center panel, and the entire island is shown here in the finished shot. I also did the penninsula trim: more plywood, decorative door panels, and corner bead. We're waiting by the phone with bated breath for our granite guy to call saying they're ready to bring it. They did send us photos of the template, so we know they've got our slabs. Here's one (sorry, don't know how to make it bigger). And our backordered drawer handles should finally be here on Monday....See MoreLittle Tudor Kitchen remodel week 1
Comments (19)Update this week. Things are progressing super quick! Floor is tiled (missed taking a full pic before they covered it up). Vent is redone with rigid venting and the ceiling re-patched and painted (where they didn't repatch) Cabinets are starting to go in as we have a hard deadline for counter measuring on Thursday. I passed my first test as a self designed/ordered kitchen planner, and the wall of cabinets fit as planned to within a 1/8 of an inch extra (which i attribute to going from plaster walls to drywall). My GC is not thrilled with the more complicated than usual set up (varying depth cabinets, and some needing to be pulled away from the wall (since I was saving money and not getting 30" deep cabinets). However, he is being calm and just going with it, amazing what the sight of an anxious pregnant woman does to a man. Pictures: Outside brick work as requested. See if you can tell the difference between original 1920, bad remodel about 15 years ago and now. Cabinets are going up! Top will be flat and crown molding, I wasn't sure how much ceiling space we would have so went a little conservative on the cabinet sizes (34 bottom and 15 top). Note that it'll all be off center but that is very much on purpose. Tiny sliver of the floor showing, butting to the original hardwood. It's already grouted, GC mixed 3 colors of grout to get it the perfect dirt color. I love the floor (Stax Tortola) it's a great combo of grey, brown and tiny bit of white and will pull the brown from the counter....See MoreLittle Tudor Kitchen remodel update - omg why is it not over!!
Comments (12)Total sympathy here. I posted a thread here when my backsplash held things up and I was without a functional kitchen for two weeks while my GC waited on the marble guy to do the backsplash. I finally lost it and sent an email saying flat out that I wanted a functional kitchen by x day regardless of whether the backsplash was ready. He ended up working on the weekend, but I did get my functional kitchen by that day. Even after that the last little things were so dragged out because they had moved on to the next job. Somehow the fact that I was holding 10k of his money as the final payment wasn't all that much motivation to come back and finish? Is there some contractors' code that they won't finish a job until a homeowner loses it on them?...See Morelenzai
