Menard's Apple Peeler

Heads up if you're in the market for an apple peeler, corer, slicer. My Menard's is offering them for $9.99 minus a $5 mail-in rebate. So, final cost is only $4.99 (plus sales tax & cost of postage, etc.) The sale runs thru Oct.24. Don't know if all Menard's stores have this offer but, if you're in the market for an apple peeler and have Menard's in your area, you might want to check it out.

ETA that I did not buy one so can't vouch for quality. I have a really old antique peeler plus another one of more recent vintage.

I got mine at Menard's several years ago, using a similar offer. It's been a workhorse this time of the year when I'm dehydrating apple slices nearly non-stop.

Aside: I noticed in the W-S catalog (also on Amazon) that KitchenAid has a peeler/slicer/spiralizer attachement for, like 18 times as much...but if you have a KA mixer, you get to use the motor. :)

About 10 years ago, our group tried one of the cheapies to plow through a couple cases of apples for a program meal. It didn't work nearly as well the antiques, wasn't sharp enough (maybe on purpose to reduce injuries), and couldn't handle imperfect apples. With the antique, it might not do the wonky parts, but would do the middle. I trust Grainlady's endorsement--Menard's probably has a better one that they're selling as a loss leader. Just thought I ought to mention it. The one that didn't work well was returned, but that's never fun.

They work great for peeling apples. Do bushels a year with one. Never tried them for curly fries so just a guess but it should work. Dave

My daughter worked in a cookware shop for a couple of months and tried all sorts of peelers but I have never found a better one than the cheapest available plastic handled swivel blade ones made by Dalson of Australia. It is very simple, light and fits in the hand. I have one which I have been using for at least 18 years. I use it on carrots and parsnips too if they need peeling. The blade has never been sharpened. It costs 95 pence over here (ca. $1.40). It' so cheap you might as well try one if you can find one. I can only find a tiny picture on Google. Here is a link that might be useful:

Is this the kind that you crank? If so, there should be a vise like thing, perhaps with pips or a shaft or something in between, to put the apple on, and an arm with the blade. The blade could look like a blade or a loop or just a sharp end. Does that sound like what you have? If so, use a heavy cutting board you don't care about--not the Hoosier even if it already has lots of dings--weighted down with some jugs of water or something. Or make some pads for both sides of the clamp out of thin plywood or stiff corrugated cardboard. Tighten the apple into the vise, put the cutting arm tight against the apple, and crank. If it works, as the screw draws the apple along, a nice even peel will come off. In my experience these are a lot more trouble than a paring knife. When peeling crates of apples at one time, we tried a couple versions of this, and they take off too much apple with the peel, only work on very symmetrical apples, and take a long time. Plus you have to get a new spiral started every time the peel breaks because of its weight or a flaw in the apple's skin. Your vintage one may work better. Or might be a different kind of peeler.

They make a small U-shaped file, same diameter as the blade, that does the trick. I got mine at the local Ace hardware. Or, depending on the brand, you can buy replacement blades for them. Check lehmans.com and I also see replacement blades on ebay for at least 3 different brands although some of the new peeler/corers aren't much more than the blades cost. If all else fails any local tool sharpener or a place that sharpens chainsaw blades should be able to do it as the files used are almost identical. Dave

I have one I bought several years ago at my local small independent grocery, when I still lived in White Cloud. It worked so well that Elery bought one for his grandkids, and they love the thing. The only thing I don't like is the suction bottom which doesn't always hold, I liked the old "clamp on" ones better.

I might have to drop by and see if my Menard's has some, I'll bet Ashley's girls would like them.

Yes, Annie, I much prefer the clamp on style, too. Both of mine clamp. But I imagine that some people are reluctant to use a clamp on their expensive stone counters. And, for the price, if you have a couple bushels of apples sitting in the foyer and needing attention, you can't go wrong with a cheapy disposable apple peeler.

The suction style works for me. Actually dh, because he's the one who uses it. He thinks it's so cool that someone created something so clever.

Got in to a Menards today, finally, and picked up one. I already have two that screw on to the counter or table top, one of which DH dumped in water and is now rusted. Thought I'd give the suction one a try. Stopped by the orchard and picked up some Empire apples so will give it a try tomorrow.
