Instructions for apple peeler

I just got a vintage White Mountain apple peeler from a local thrift shop but unfortunately it did not have the instructions. Does anyone happen to have the instructions. I did notice that the opening is not deep enough to clamp onto my kitchen counter. I should be able to clamp it onto my hoosier.

Well, one must be careful to not injure ones hoosier when peeling apples!

About all I could find is this apple peeler and box with instructions for 5 bucks.

But there are many videos on youtube of people peeling apples. Do a search on antique apple peeling or similar and perhaps you will find a video of somebody using one.

Is this the kind that you crank? If so, there should be a vise like thing, perhaps with pips or a shaft or something in between, to put the apple on, and an arm with the blade. The blade could look like a blade or a loop or just a sharp end. Does that sound like what you have?

If so, use a heavy cutting board you don't care about--not the Hoosier even if it already has lots of dings--weighted down with some jugs of water or something. Or make some pads for both sides of the clamp out of thin plywood or stiff corrugated cardboard. Tighten the apple into the vise, put the cutting arm tight against the apple, and crank. If it works, as the screw draws the apple along, a nice even peel will come off.

In my experience these are a lot more trouble than a paring knife. When peeling crates of apples at one time, we tried a couple versions of this, and they take off too much apple with the peel, only work on very symmetrical apples, and take a long time. Plus you have to get a new spiral started every time the peel breaks because of its weight or a flaw in the apple's skin. Your vintage one may work better. Or might be a different kind of peeler.

They work great for peeling apples. Do bushels a year with one. Never tried them for curly fries so just a guess but it should work. Dave

That does look like fun - I'd considered getting one last Fall and decided I didn't have the storage space to spare, very tight kitchen. I have a friend who has just about every Pampered Chef gadget ever produced and could borrow her apple peeler for big jobs if needed, let her worry about where to put it away :)

Crab apples maybe?? It may be that the tree is just to young to bear bigger ones, or needs some really good fruit tree fertilizer for a few years to get them bigger. Pruning, and thinning is also very necessary. About all can do is hand peel, or cut into quarters, cut seeds and stem out and cook down to an apple sauce. Here, my two diffrent dwarf apple trees are loaded, and one will be ready to pick in about a month. They are twice the size of golf balls now. The other tree ripens later and there are twice the amount of apples there which makes that apple a little smaller. If you see many small apples dropping off very early on, it may mean that the trees has too much stress to get apples to a decent size. If the center seed area is bitter, it can be from too acidic soil. Adding calcium carbonate and a fruit tree specific fertilizer with a TRACE of boron is a great aid to get apples up in size. Also plenty of water. I water my two trees about once a week if they don't see a any rain. Good luck!

I saw this on FB and just started to laugh. I have been known to use a drill or Dremmel tool in the kitchen - but I wonder about the learning curve for apples. I might have to try this - but normally I don't peel mine... There is a 5 second add to nuke but the apple video is awesome.
