Kindle books free?

I remember Kindle used to offer some books free, mostly classics maybe. Is that still done? I cannot find them on Amazon.

Socks, there are gazillions of free books, in every genre. Go to the Kindle bookstore, type free books into the search box at the top of the page. A menu will drop down listing the categories or you can just in.

Sites like BookBub or EReader will send you e-mails with suggestions in the genres that you select. BookBub can also be followed on Facebook

Congrats to your niece! I read a bit from her stitchtunes blog. She's a good writer. I wish her good luck with future endeavors. Also, my best to her DH. My DH has also always wanted to write & now that he's retired has taken several fiction writing classes over the past 18 months, or so. DH just recently completed his third short story but hasn't yet considered trying to get published. I've marked this thread for him to take a look at since your neice also writes short stories. Thanks! I just started using kindle books. A kindle reader for macs makes it especially good for the kitchen computer. There are free cookbooks today. Filipino, Nile Style, and Old Havana. I am always looking for inspiration.

you are welcome Petra I love pixelofink.com and their newsletter it took me a while to realize you get a lot more listings if you get the daily email from them. That is one daily email I look forward to and always go right away and check them because in some cases they go off the free price so quickly. Since my husband is now using my Vizio tablet and using the kindle app I have been downloading a lot of books that I think he would like, he is a voracious reader. Yesterday I was going through my rather large Kindle library on Amazon to make a list for him and almost every book I had downloaded for free was now about $4 each. That adds up fast to a very nice savings.

You can also get free books in Kindle format on Project Gutenberg. Use your Kindle browser to go to http://m.gutenberg.org/. On the detail page for the book, you can choose your download format, such as PDF, HTML, Kindle or Kindle with images (if applicable). They also have trails of other books that people who downloaded your book have gotten, like on Amazon, which can be a good way to find new books.

Project Gutenberg is an endeavor to get all the public domain books around the world digitized and available. There are also publishers who allow some books under copyright to be had for free. Many of the popular titles are available on Amazon, but there are many many more which are obscure, but interesting. For instance, you can get Novum Organum by Sir Francis Bacon in paperback on Amazon, but not on Kindle, whereas Project Gutenberg has it in Kindle format for free download.

My favorite sites are pixel of ink.com, bookgorilla, bookbub. There are many listed on the Amazon site under free kindle books. Another really good site is hundred zeros they list several free kindle books

You can go to Amazon Kindle book store. Type free books. But I usually get my free books from the public library, I downloaded Overdrive, and borrow books that way for three weeks. If you can't finish the books in time, just turn off the WiFi on your kindle and go onto airplane mode and the download will stay on your kindle until you turn back the WiFi. That's what I do if some reserves come in together and I can't finish in time. It doesn't stop the library from getting the book back, but it will stay on your Kindle.

Shelgal, I have access to Overdrive. It seems sometimes a person has to wait for a book, is that right?

Probably like most people--sometimes I buy used books, sometimes borrow from library, occasionally purchase from Amazon for long or BIG books.

Shelgal, they list top sellers, click on that. They list top 100 paid and top 100 free.

Yes, sometimes with a library's Overdrive subscription there's a waiting list. Especially for best sellers and recent releases. A wait list is the opposite of "free" in a sense - free books are ones that few want to read.

Socks, if you're in California, you may be able to get library cards for neighboring communities. Each library system's Overdrive subscription is for a small subset of what Overdrive has to offer and each is different from the other. By having a few cards, you'll have access to more and different titles. Some library systems share their Overdrive subscriptions with others, so for some, getting another card may just provide access to the same subscription choices. You can check this on Overdrive. The best cards to have are the ones from the bigger cities.

(California gives state funding to libraries IF they wish to receive it. In return, participating libraries must allow any California resident to get a library card, even if they live out of their service area. I've accumulated a few from travels in the state and it permits a much broader range of choice for Overdrive use).

I'll give Overdrive a try. I would like to try Kareem Abdul Jabar's book Mycroft Holmes.

I have quite a bit of reading backed up since I volunteer in our library's used bookstore, and I'm one of my best customers, but still on the lookout for inexpensive or free reading. Wouldn't want to run out of reading material!
