PreM/Fertilizer advice on Fall renovated bare spots
Comments (2)billhill, Thanks for the response. I must admit your advice on fertilizer surprised me as I was ready to buy the non-fertilizer pre-M. I assume it's because even though most parts of the lawn have almost a year behind them, it is still new and has a lot of growing to do. The upcoming summer does worry me, but we do a good job of infrequent and deep waterings, so that should help a good bit. As far as Organic goes, I've used Bradfield (a peletized organic fertilizer) in the past, but as bad as this lawn was last year when we moved in, I knew it needed more than it could supply. I'm leery about mixing organic and non-organic, so although I'm spreading compost this spring in spots (depending on how much I have left over from other bed renovations), I'll probably wait till next year and start with compost and Bradfield in one shot. Appreciate the response and the advice. Have a great evening. Dave...See MoreRecovery from harsh Winter: bare spots, hard soil, weeds
Comments (7)I don't see any reason at all to believe that KBG is in your grass at all. I do see some Creeping Bentgrass in there though. Key point, You said you had sod QUALITY seed, NOT sod. Advice will vary greatly knowing this. I would use Tenacity as a pre-M and it will kill out your Creeping Bent when applied 2 times at 2 week intervals and most importantly, at half rate. May take three passes, but it wipes that stuff out! Pay attention to where the grass looks bluish and dewy in the AM when the good grass is dried out of the dew. That said, on to the next post. Tenacity does not cost 90 per bottle. Not even close. Closer to half that, and is far cheaper oz. per oz. of specialty and big box chems that don't do 1/10th of what it does. BTW, if you feel there may be KBG in there, look up Poa Annua. That is far more likely. This post was edited by gsweater on Sun, Apr 13, 14 at 22:27...See MoreLawn in bad shape due to sun and weeds
Comments (2)I would: 1. Get some weed b gon max and spot spray weeds every week until they die. Then dig out the dead weeds and just leave the gaps for now. 2. Keep mowing 3. water once a week, 1 inch only. 4. Wait til fall, then overseed lawn, cut very low, throw down some seed and starter fertilizer and water twice a day until new grass gorws. 5. next spring pre emergent and keep at the weeds with weed b gon. Good Luck....See MoreFixing bare(ing) spots
Comments (15)I spread some compost where i saw bareing spots. Initially weeds shot up where ever the compost was. I did nothing and they eventually lessened. I want to see how much thicker grass will do. Walking through the yard the other day i got dismayed at how much better it looked last year when i bought it. Granted, the grass is starting to green, but not yet grow. I did put down some alfalfa pellets a few weeks back on one of the Federal holidays. I think i read somewhere that it may take a season or two when you switch to organic for really good effects. True? it just rained. I wouldn't call it a downpour by any means; about 0.3" in last hour and change. These are the pics. Do i have an issue? i plan (still) to Logan Labs my soil soon. I also plan to do a jar test, but in all ignorance, I'm not sure what it tests or tells me....See Morebeckyinrichmond
