Adventure to date day 4
Comments (30)Day 33 Wall tile went up yesterday....and my beautiful blue paint...does not work with it. The blue wall looks like an orphan, unwanted and unrelated to anything. As my mother would have said "damn blast and thunderation". The blue in the accent tile is quite dark, and I don't think I want to have a dark navy bathroom. Sigh. Back to the sludge palette. So off to my local Home Hardware to the resident paint guru. Of course when I got there I only had a sample of the wall tile, so home I trudged again to get the wall and accent tiles, and back into town. Mme guru short listed 3 tones for me as that is the range of choice I can cope with. " How much to you need" " Undoubtedly one quart plus a tablespoon so I had better get a gallon". Handyman Dave (HD) was hard at work when I got back, so I didn't have a chance to paint before the floor started to go in. Good thing last night I had painted sealer on the travertine squares in the accent tile with an iddy biddy 10 hair brush, as the floor is down now so I can't do anything this evening. My the floor is a rich colour. Things are starting to pull together, and even without my blue I think I am really going to like it. The piles of tiles is diminished, although the piles of garbage and detritus are not. I can now manoeuver through the upstairs hallway, and only have to clamber over the piles of tile bits and cardboard boxes piled by the door. Tomorrow is grout time. The end is near, the end is near. and I can always stick in a few accessories to highlight the blue....See MoreIce Cream Parlor
Comments (8)Thanks everyone. Jeanne, those are salt cellars that I used to put sprinkles in. When I first thought of doing this table I planned to use a tc that matches the napkins, but it just didn't work... Didn't think to use a different color tc Hmm. Most of the ice cream parlors in my area were run by local dairies that made their own ice cream. Some had black and white checkered floors. Usually the table tops were white. OA, I had the TC and found the napkins recently at a TS. I was really hoping to use them together, maybe another time. Luvs, After reading everyone's responses I did have ice cream Oh the power of suggestion! Punk, I'll have to try a butterfinger blizzard. Aren't the ice cream trucks fun? Kids big and small come running when they hear them coming. Karen, I think the napkins are cute too, but I just noticed that one of them looks like it's melting LOL. It was fun to do a table that brings back happy memories of younger days. I'm glad you all enjoyed it. Nana...See MoreCookalong #38 --- Dates
Comments (31)As usual I am LATE to the party, but BF and I made the BEST applesauce date bread tonight. He loves dates. This is going to be quite the keeper, since I think it could be used for all kinds of dried fruits like raisins or dried cherries for example. The original recipe was for figs. I very often have applesauce and yogurt in the fridge to use up. This bread is YUM! Date, Applesauce and Almond Breakfast Loaf (original recipe was for Figs) Recipe by Barbara Estabrook, for "Cooking Light" magazine, October 2010. Makes 2 8 inch loaf pans. Struesel topping (I left this off) 2 1/2 TBSLP brown sugar 2 TBLSP all purpose flour 1 1/2 TBLSP coarsely chopped almonds 1 TBLSP chilled butter, cut into small pieces 1/8 tsp. ground cinnamon Bread: 1 cup dried figs (or dates) 1/2 cup boiling water Cooking spray 1 TBLSP all purpose flour 2 large egg whites 1 large egg 3/4 cup unsweetened applesauce 1/3 cup fat free yogurt 1/4 cup canola oil 1/2 tsp. almond extract (I used Amaretto liqueur instead) 3/4 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour 1/2 cup whole wheat flour 1/3 cup chopped toasted almonds (no salt) 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking soda Preheat oven to 350 degrees Prepare struesel topping ingredients by mixing them together in a small bowl and setting them aside. Spray or grease the two 8 inch loaf pans and then shake the flour around in them until very lightly coated. Combine wet ingredients Add flours and baking powder, soda, etc. Drain dates and mix in Add almonds. Pour batter into pans, top with streusel. Bake for 55 min. or until toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Not the best photo, one of my bread pans was too large....See MoreI'm driving myself crazy! Please vote. Pics.
Comments (15)parma42: Thanks, I just wasn't sure and needed some re-assurance about the wainscoting. I too liked that small blue sample to the right of the other two. I wish I knew what color that was and why we nixed it. That was 15 samples ago (no kidding) and back when I thought, "this will be fun". I'll find it and put a larger sample on the wall and post for your opinion. Do you think it's too much blue with blue on top and white below chair rail for DS's room? I can't change his bedding since it's only 8 months old. Any chocolate color suggestions? allison704: That makes 2 votes for the small blue to the right of the other two. I'm definitely digging through my samples tomorrow. You're so right, about letting them be individual. Do you have a lighter blue in mind? miles661: I know it's really hard to give advice about colors from a computer screen, it's right up there with picking your color off a paint chip. Thanks for looking anyways. My youngest has the strongest opinions and wants to keep her pink walls. The two teenagers, they're another story. DS since turning 13 speaks in grunts and really could care less about what color is on his wall, just so long as it's not airplanes and fish. He really only picked the lighter blue for his bathroom because I promised him he could sleep in for another hour if he made a decision. That's about as good as it gets from my teenagers. les917: Youre back to help me YEAH!!! #1: We had to switch to a blue with more of a greenish undertone. The gray undertones looked beyond awful with the carpeting. #2: Do you pretty please have a creamy white or soft green color suggestion? #3: Same as above. Any taupe or beige colors in mind? I'm taking your advice about painting DDs BR white and running with it. Granted, I'm running in circles (haha) but DDs loved your idea. bluekitobessed: Just based on your screen name you must know your blues. HELP ME!! Grayer blue looks hideous with the carpeting. I'm nixing chair rail in DD(16)'s room based on opinions received tonight. Huge sigh of relief!! I tend to be more traditional and I too like white below the chair rail for DS's room. Did you not like either of the blues? No hurt feelings, any blue in mind? brutuses: You my dear new GW friend are the reason I'm keeping the pretty pink faux in DD(10)'s room. Your comment on a previous post made me take a really good look at her room. Her room makes her so happy and I always smile when I'm in there either waking her up for school or tucking her in. I only plan on painting over the faux from chair rail down. There are too many dings and scratches and it give the room a kind of grungy feel. Another nail on the head is the blue/gray for DD(16)'s room. What type of computer screen do you have? You saw the gray in the blues clashing with the brown?! Do know of any blues with a green undertone? Thanks for your input. kswl: I love the exterior of your home!! Have you decided on your iron railing? The large left sample is my DH's & DD's first choice. I really like it myself. Do you think that it would be overwhelming to have an entire BR that color?...See MoreUser
