I used to love drive-ins when I was a teenager and young adult. The last one I went to was a few years ago and I actually went with another KTer! (Charlee!) I didn't recall the drive-in being so noisy, the sound was not very good and I was super distracted by all the cars and people going by. I couldn't follow the movie at all. It was the first time my 20-something daughter had been to one and she liked it... and wants to go again. So in my experience it's better when you're younger. lol

It does bring back some memories though... have fun!!

I grew up in a small town and had one around the corner. We had a bunch of kids all around the same age on our street. We often took a blanket and pillow and walked to the movie. We would all lay on the front hump with the speaker on the ground. Wonderful memories. Our son takes his lives to a local one. They have a ball. They often meet up with some other families for a wonderful evening.

We still have two.

DH and I have not been there since the kids were little.

Sitting in the car, focusing on a small screen, and not having surround sound hold little appeal to us.

Thought it was great when the kids were small. I would put the back seat down and snuggle them in sleeping bags. We could go to the movies and not have to get a babysitter.

Last time was for Batman with Heath Ledger at a drive-in in Door County. Lots of mosquitos, but we had fun. We were there with a bunch of family, so the company was good.

We have one a couple of miles from our house, we have not been since our kids were little. I keep wanting to take my DGD so she can experience it and tell her DGkids how she went to a drive-in once.

we just went last week. we have one about a half hour from where we live in western new york. we try to go at least once or twice a month through november when they close for the season. :)

I have not been to one since my oldest son was young and he is in his mid-40's. My then-husband worked late (or so he said!!) and I would take my son to the drive in. The first feature would be a kid's movie and the second a grown-up movie. He'd watch the first one, then conk out on the back seat and I'd watch the second. The only hard part was carrying him into the house when we got home. He was like a sack of potatoes.

There is a drive-in in Wellfleet on Cape Cod. I'd like to go but it closes as of Labor Day and I go up there in September.

We have one here in Oregon that has been made into a RV park. Stayed there last month, but no movie showing that night, Not quite sure what kind of schedule they have, but it is a lovely park and it would be pleasant to sit in the grassy areas to watch a movie....or inside ones' own home on wheels.

No, none around here but I have fond memories of them.
My Mom would load us all up (in our pjs), take snacks, pillows, blankets, and we'd go to the drive-in. I think it must have been evenings my dad worked graveyard because I don't remember him being there more than a time or two.

My first date with DH was a drive in movie. I spilled buttered popcorn in his prized '57 chevy - he was not amused but clearly recovered from my insult to his car :) Come to think of it, he'd be as upset today if I spilled popcorn in the car, hasn't changed.

lets see...we left san diego in 1986, for wa state (and still went) moved back but in 2 years time several had closed...bought our house here in mi, with a drive-in around the corner...wouldn't you know by move in date, it had been torn down, and got target instead!! so about 27 years?
when they moved the detroit lions from the silver dome to ford field, they did install a "portable" screen...but we've never gone and nothing like the good old days of car-load pricing...figure between the gas to get there, and $7 or $8 per person i'll stay home...

I grew up down the road from one, used to park on the hill and watch for a few minutes. We have one close by, need to go.

Went as a teenager.
Then took my kids to the drive in many times. It was quite the thing to do. I had a large van and loaded up my 4 kids, plus about 4 extra kids. The older ones would bring lawn chairs and sleeping bags. My 2 youngest would stay in the van with me and the rest out in the lawn chairs. When the movie was over I had to go wake up all the kids and get them loaded to go home. A lot of work, but they sure enjoyed it.
My oldest, DD 40 years old, just found the drive in in Door County, WI and has started taking her kids there! She said it brought back such fun memories!

I grew up within about 5 miles from the first Drive-in theater in the US, just outside of Camden,NJ. It was on the Boulevard, and off the Airport circle.
Remember going there as a young child.

We are going TONIGHT!! Sooooo excited! We're going to see Pacific Rim, and taking our own drinks, and popcorn and assorted other things! OMG...we may even make out! Giggles

We actually live about 4 miles from the only one left in our state.

Haven't been though--we keep saying we should go, but I have a feeling it would be a very disappointing experience. Now, you
have to use your radio for the sound (no more of those wired speakers to attach to your car window). You're not allowed to bring in outside food (costs something like $15 for a 'food permit' if you want to do that). The refreshment stand isn't the old, standard hot dogs, burgers, popped corn, etc, but a bunch of gourmet stuff (that sounds pricey).

When we were kids, though, a couple of times a summer, we'd arrive at our shore house, have dinner, and Dad would pile us all into the car without saying where we were going. On the way off the island, he'd stop at the grocery store. At that point, we'd be in the back seat, poking each other and mouthing, "The drive in, we're going to the drive in". Sure enough, there would usually be a Disney movie playing. What fun that was.

We live a couple miles from one, but haven't been there in years. I used to take the kids when they were little and son still remembers a James Bond movie when he was three. As teens we'd go almost every week. The one near me just went digital.

I too have fond memories of going to a drive-in movie theater in Cincinnati Ohio. There were several that I attended with both my family and with my husband when we were dating. Oh what fun as my younger sisters would go to the playground under the large screen to play on the swings before the movie started then watching from our car sitting outside on lawn chairs. What a fun evening memories. Also going to the concession stands for our favorite drinks and treats. Thanks for bringing back these wonderful memories for me. Mary

When I was a kid my parents took us to the Drive-In several times a summer. Now I'm living in Long Island New York, where the last drive in closed years ago. I know of only one drive-in still open, it's the Transit Drive In in Western New York, Niagara County. We took our kids there about 20 years ago. Unbelievably,it's still open. A couple held their wedding there several years ago.I still remember the wait between movies, when they'd show slide pictures of hot dogs and french fries up on the screen. "Let's all go to the drive-in" was their theme-song.

The drive-in experience last night was ALOT of fun! We met friends there, and even tho we weren't parked next to each other, we got together before the movie and during intermission. I really do miss the window speakers. Had to keep turning the motor on to be sure the battery didn't die. We stopped at the store on the way, and stocked up on munchies and drinks, but got an ice cream cone there. The visual quality was pretty bad..LoL and no surround sound. But for the overall experience, it was fun, and we'll do it again I'm sure. That said, we may go see Pacific Rim at the regular movie theater again today, to be able to see and hear it better. :)

I lived in Hawaii as a kid and there was one near us. I have fond memories of going with my neighbor. Her dad had a big truck with a covered bed, so we would get in our sleeping bags and eat brown bags of popcorn-YUM!

The last time i went to a drive-in was in college (about 20 years ago, and 5 hours from where I live now). We saw True Lies. Not sure that one is still there. It was just a little old man running it.

I so wish there was one around here so I could take my kids (5 & 8). I think they'd love it!
