THe local rink got torn down a couple years ago, a BIG orthodonist put in a mega office there. we've lost a bowling alley in the area; put up a big box store there. Still have 2 around though. One drive in movie theatre. Don't know how that manages to stay afloat though. All the fun stuff is gone................. :(

And funny, we just drove past a miniature golf place on a GORGEOUS afternoon and not a soul was there....probably inside playing video games.

Around here we have indoor ice skating rinks. A lot of them. I don't know if they use any of them in the summer for roller skating or not. I think one might.

There are several bowling alleys here and Joe's mother (who is 81) is in a bowling league. Bowling alleys are very popular for kids birthday parties as well.

I've never seen a drive in movie theatre. There used to be one here in the city back in the 70's but I think it got damaged in a wind storm and wasn't repaired.

We have a roller rink and two bowling alleys. A town or two over has a big drive in.
A town north west of us has an old fashioned indoor theater. It is pretty cool!

A roller rink near us closed. Business had been down for years. Bowling is popular still during our cold weather. An older one with real wood alleys was torn down a few years ago and a new Brunswick Lanes with pool tables, nice video arcade, lazer tag, and party rooms was built in the same area and they have laminate instead of wood, just not the same. I don't understand why they just didn't remodel the old one, but it was probably more cost effective and didn't fit in with the city plans of re-vamping that area in my city. My sister bowls in a league and hates the the laminate.

There may be one left about 40 miles from hear. Used to be 3-4 within that area.

We had a roller-rink but it closed up and is now an indoor storage facility.

There are a number of bowling lanes still in use. As Casey said, children's bowling for birthday parties is popular.

No drive-in theatre in my city, but there is in the next city over, about 20 miles.

We have several indoor roller and ice rinks nearby, and I know my friends' teenage kids go there on weekends. There are lots of bowling alleys, too, and - as others have said - bowling is popular for kids' birthday parties. No drive-in movies, though.

I think the bowling alleys are still doing pretty good in my rural area. The closest roller rink is about 25 miles away. I would like to see those types of places make a big comeback instead of so much 'sitting' technology that takes place.

I'm in the SF bay area and there is an indoor ice rink in the next town from me. It's been there since I was a kid. I imagine it still has people going or it would've closed by now.

There's also a bowling alley in that same town, and another town over (a few actually). They have leagues. I haven't bowled in years but last time I did, it was packed.

As far as drive in movie theaters, haven't seen one in forever. I dont think there are any around here.

In the country: One ice rink, no roller rinks that I know of. There is a drive-in--the only one left in the entire state--that does quite well. People come from all over to give their kids the experience of going to the drive-in. The question gets really interesting when you get to bowling alleys. A year ago, there were 2 in the county. then shortly after Christmas, the big, glitzy one (that had just undergone a very expensive rennovation) burned down. Won't get into the details--it's a long, involved story, but it turned out the proprietor of the OTHER bowling alley hired a couple of idiots to commit arson, and get rid of the competition. So now we have none.

We have a couple of small, older, bowling allies around but that's it. No indoor roller skating rinks and no drive in movies.

I live in SF eastbay. I have 2 bowling alleys within 10 miles, I have an indoor ice rink and a roller skating rink as well. Putt putt golf course 10 miles away. An outdoor movie theater 20+ miles.

I *remember* all of these, but there are no drive-in movies near here that I know of. There are ice rinks; all but one are park district facilities. There are two roller rinks each about 20 mins. away. Bowling? One *two-lane* in our former town -- with *pin boys*! One huge new facility w/a large restaurant connected 20 mins. away.

I've seen a huge increase in ice hockey, starting when our DS was a child (35 years ago). Really kind of goofy to see a kid who can barely walk, let alone skate, with tons of expensive equipment draped over him. Lots of hours for moms to sit and shiver. Lots more equipment to buy as kiddo grows.

Here in Southern Oregon we have an Ice Rink with hockey teams, Roller Rink that is lots of fun, one mega Bowling Alley, that hosts big tournaments. A hundred miles away, there is a RV campground that has a drive in movie screen. Have never seen a movie there, but I understand they do show them. Nanny

In the "olden days" (LOL!) We had a Traveling Roller Rink that came to town that was Tented in the summer. No A/C, we traveled 40 miles to a indoor Roller Rink for A/C.

Closest Movie Theater is 30 miles away. Drive-In about 80 miles away. Very small Bowling Alley 30 miles away.

I live in a big city and within a 5 minute drive of my house we have a roller rink (we've never been to it), a drive-in movie theatre (we've been many times) and several bowling alleys. We've only gone bowling as a family a couple of times, but my kids have been to several bowling birthday parties. Oh, and there's at least one mini-golf course.

Only one drive-in movie left that I know of. My friend and I were talking about it just last night. Now that's one place where you were always welcome to bring your own food!

We still had all three here up until a couple of years ago when the skating rink and the last drive in movie went out of business. Bowling is quite popular here.

I found this website where you put in your zip code, give a mileage range and it comes up with all the drive-ins in your area. It shows all, including the ones that are closed. I found 5 open ones within 50 miles of my zip code.

I've seen some bowling allys but there are no more drive-in's. They may have roller skating rinks somewhere in a bigger town.

We still have several roller rinks in the greater bay area with a couple that still run artistic clubs. Artistic roller skating is way down in popularity these days. The few remaining artistic clubs are a mere fraction of the size they were back in the 70s/80s. Some of the rinks are mainly for Derby Girls and public sessions geared to larger parties like school groups etc.

Ice is stronger right now. We have a half dozen rinks within driving distance. Two are Sharks ice Centers and one is managed by them although it doesn't carry the name. One of the facilities has not one but three rinks for the San Jose Sharks to practice on and for the amateur competitors (both artistic and hockey)as well as serving the public.

Still have several bowling alleys but not as many as before and a few are a part of larger recreational zones.

Have a large multi-screened drive-in. The smaller ones h are long gone.

Yep. I have all within driving distance and the bowling alley about two blocks from my home. The drive in and the bowling alley just opened up in the last year and both look like they are doing great. We still have a bowling league around here. I live in a very small town. Maybe that's why it works here. Nothing else much to do.

I live in Long Island. Years ago there was a skating rink nearbyby "United Skates of America" (ha-ha), but they closed years ago, as well as all our drive-ins. When my kids were young, back in the early 1990's , there were still a couple of drive-ins. We had great fiun family-adventures going to movies. The kids ate snacks and fell asleep.

We may have one in the SE quadrant of the state. I thought that someone opened one during the summer months strictly for nostalgia buffs.

2. Roller Skating rinks.
These still operate, but there are only about 1/3 the number as were 30 yrs ago.

3. Bowing Alleys:

Yup. Popular as ever at my neck of the woods. But then, you'd expect it; The local bowling alley hosts a tiddly-winks tournament when things get slow in the winter. The Harley Riders have stored their 'cycles for the winter and they are among the supporters of the game.

There's still some around but they're not what I'd call popular. Niche clientele.
