Foam rollers?

First, let me state I live in a double wide mobile home. But as the walls are VOG (vinyl on gypsum) I consider the walls are the same either in my home or in a stick built home. Problem: the walls in some areas are not flat (either cheap or due to settling of the house); some are rather on the wavey side, In other words, not completely flat. I got a good view of this when I had to replace the wall corners that were horribly scratched by previous owner's cats. Some walls in the other rooms are the same but the wall that really bothers me is one in my around the fireplace in my living room (that I see every day) where the sun shines on it for quite a while and shows where either the middle roller painted or the edges of the roller did. ( I should mention that the paint is a pearl finish; I went with matte for the living room and kitchen.)

I have a little foam roller to go behind the flush and to get into smaller areas. Would a larger foam roller work better? I have only that one wall and quite a bit of the paint to use.

(This reminds me of my boss whose pregnant wife had become stuck between the flush and wall while painting. He couldn't stop laughing. She was not amused.)

How wide is your little foam roller? Is there a reason you want to use a foam roller instead of the wool or wool-like roller?

A matte paint will not reflect the light, thus you won't see surface imperfections. Use your skinny foam roller to go behind tight areas, and a 3/8" nap roller cover for the rest of the wall. The nap roller will give your wall a nice finish.

You really don't need , or want the TSP wash if you are sanding all the cabinet surfaces ! I'd also highly recommend you prime the sanded surface first, let it dry and then sand that with very fine paper before the top coat. That will make for an even tougher surface and will make the top coat smoother eliminating soe of that orange peel.

Please help me understand why these are not ok to use on already painted walls. I used one to test colors and the finish seems to look nice. I know they are intended for flat surfaces like doors. The one I used is 6" in length.

These little rollers caught my eye on HGTV. I'd never seen anything like them before. I saw them in HS yesterday. Very inexpensive and apparently quite good for very smooth surfaces. Less mess to clean up, too!

@Laura Holland Thanks so much for the update. I am very glad you found someone to do a post-catalyzed conversion varnish on your cabinetry. That's the standard for finish longevity. How utterly horrible that the contractors have already messed it up. Yes, repairs are very difficult with the 2-part coatings. They absolutely should have been much more cautious. It's somewhat hard to mar a 2-part finish, so they must have been really careless. It sounds like you may have gotten the satin finish of the INSL-X. I have heard the semi-gloss is significantly more durable. If you do have it re-done, I wouldn't go with any Benjamin Moore products again. Find someone who can do Milesi, Renner, or ICA-Ilva. All three of those would be superior, but they may need to be sprayed as most formulations from those companies dry fast, and the 2-part formulas provide the most hardness and chemical resistance. Many people have reported finish failures with Advance even with a Stix Primer. INSL-X is a step above Advance based on my research. In fact, INSL-X is actually made by the same people who make Stix. Benjamin Moore bought the company.

I was using a "regular" 3/8 (I think) inch nap with pearl finish. I know matte doesn't reflect and really like it. Did my kitchen/dining and living room with matte because it was much easier to get an even looking finish. The problem I have is one wall that gets light most of the day and was painted with pearl finish before I went to matte (really stubborn here); had done bathroom and bedroom also with pearl and if you happen to see any walls in the light you'll see why I went matte. Since the wall board is wavy, and the matte paint showed this as well before drying, I'm pretty sure the problem is with the walls and not me. I figured a foam roller would conform to the wavy surface better than a regular one. After three tries I said that's it, I just will look away until night. Not the best solution, I know. It's just that I'm hesitant to do yet another coat if the results aren't any better.
